French boss slams Materazzi
France boss Raymond Domenech has defended the actions of disgraced ace Zinedine Zidane by laying the blame of his dismissal on Marco Materazzi.
Zizou ended his career in dramatic fashion as after giving his side the lead in the World Cup Final, he departed the game with a red card following a head-butt on the Inter stopper in extra time.
?ndrea Pirlo was given the Man of the Match award, but it should have gone to Materazzi,? Domenech ironically stated.
?hen someone has to put up with what Zidane had to and the referee doesn? do anything then one understands.
?ou can? excuse it, but you can understand it.?
It? unclear at this stage what exactly happened between the two players for Zidane to react in such a manner, even if it seems that the former Juventus playmaker may have reacted to verbal provocation.
?omething must have happened even if I don? know what,? added the Les Bleus tactician. ?ut I don? think he decided to head-butt him for no reason, something must have occurred.
?o see him finish playing in this way is sad as he? had a great career and World Cup,? added the Coach.
Zidane was not immediately dismissed and Domenech has confirmed that a form of instant video evidence was used on the sidelines.
?he referee and the assistant didn? see it,? he revealed. ?hen the fourth official saw the television replay and told the referee. |

Florent MALOUDA (FRA)
We did all we could, and we can have no regrets. The Italians were looking to provoke us throughout the match. We're now just going to carry on and try to use this as a springboard for the next competitions we enter. What we've experienced here as a group really was something special.
ni kata2 from the players la..aku just amik si mamat ni punye quote....dlm byk2 la aku personally kata france yg byk provoke player Italy...or is it due to the 'provocation' tu ke yg buat dia menjatuhkan dirinya in order for france to get the penalty?:hmm:..pa pun korang ni professional x kan la provoke budak2 sekolah pun nak layan? come on la... |

GREAT ONE...
France woke up with the bitter taste of defeat on Monday after its 5-3 loss on penalties to Italy in the World Cup final, but the question on everyone's lips was: "Why did Zinedine Zidane do it?"
In his last game for his country, the French captain and midfield genius was sent off for head butting an opponent, an ignominious end to a glorious career that ensured he missed the penalty shoot-out that decided the game.
Italy held its nerve to run out 5-3 winners in the shoot-out after the score was tied at 1-1 at the end of extra time. Zidane had scored a seventh minute penalty to put France ahead in Sunday's final in Berlin with Materazzi equalizing 12 minutes later. (Match report)
"The blue angel turned into a devil," the daily newspaper Le Parisien said of France's favourite footballing icon, making a play on words on the national side's nickname -- "Les Bleus" -- which means "the blues" in French.
The paper nevertheless ran a "Thank You" headline on its front page in tribute to the achievement of the unfancied national side that reached its second final in eight years despite being largely written off as too old.
Liberation's frontpage saw the result as "Cruel" while the Le Figaro daily lamented the "Broken Dream of Les Bleus."
But the country's top sports paper, L'Equipe, roasted Zidane in an editorial by Claude Droussent, who said Zidane's "stupid" assault on Italy defender Marco Materazzi was hard to forgive.
"Zinedine, you know, the hardest thing this morning is not to try and understand why Les Bleus, your Bleus, lost the World Cup final last night. But to explain to tens of millions around the world how you could have let yourself go and head butt Marco Materazzi, 10 minutes from the end of extra-time.
"What should we tell our children and all those for whom you have become an example for ever," he asked, concluding: "How could that happen to a man like you?"
The newspaper criticized Zidane for failing to take to the pitch after the game to collect his medal for France's second place finish and console the team mates he had let down.
But the players themselves, who have refused to divulge what was said to Zidane by Materazzi, praised the contribution of a player widely regarded as the best of his generation.
"All I want to say to 'Zizou,' and I think France should say it and the world of football...is 'thank you.' And thank you, that's it," France striker Thierry Henry said, using the affectionate nickname by which Zidane is known.
"To finish in a World Cup final takes nothing away from anything. On the contrary, we should thank him because if he hadn't returned (to the national side) we would not have been there tonight," said France defender Willy Sagnol.
French President Jacques Chirac, who on Sunday hailed Zidane's contribution to the sport despite his red card, was due to host the players and coaching staff at a lunch later on Monday at his official Elysee Palace residence.
But it remained unclear if the team would celebrate their unofficial title as world vice-champions with a parade on the Champs Elysee after coach Raymond Domenech hinted he was not in favor. |

Scandal helped us win the World Cup, say brave Azzurri
BERLIN, (AFP) - Italy's triumphant players believe the Serie A match-fixing scandal actually helped them win the World Cup.
The Azzurri were crowned champions for a fourth time after defeating France in a penalty shoot-out after the match had finished 1-1.
Sunday's intriguing contest was overshadowed by the sending-off of France playmaker Zinedine Zidane in his last ever match for headbutting Marco Materazzi in the chest in the second period of extra-time.
Italian football has been dragged into the mire since the eruption of the match-fixing scandal. Four clubs - Juventus, AC Milan, Fiorentina and Lazio - are suspected of match-fixing in the 2004-05 season.
Juventus are almost certain to be relegated, while the other three clubs are facing a points deduction for the start of next season. The sentences will be handed down by a sports tribunal in Rome on Wednesday.
"I'm convinced that if it wasn't for the scandal, we wouldn't have won the World Cup," said midfielder Gennaro Gattuso.
"It gave us an extra push."
Italy captain captain Fabio Cannavaro agreed the squad had been galvanized by their off-field problems.
"For me this is the highlight of my career," he said. "The lads were great.
"This victory tastes even sweeter given all that's happened over the past few weeks."
Striker Luca Toni said winning the World Cup went some way to restoring Italian football's battered image.
"We will celebrate all summer," said the Fiorentina striker.
"I don't know what to say, its indescribable. I could never have imagined anything like this.
"We've united Italy, from Lombardy to Sicily, who are celebrating in the piazzas.
"We came here with a lot of problems and nobody believed we could do it. Now we are champions of the world."
Italy coach Marcello Lippi saluted his players for a Herculean effort.
"I have to say thanks to these great players," he said. "They have shown great heart and determination.
"As a coach I have won the Champions League and Serie A titles, but I've never felt joy like this."
Italy keeper Gianluigi Buffon said divine intervention also played a role in the Azzurri's success.
"We've always had a squad capable of becoming champions, but you also need a bit of luck and some help from someone up above," he said.

From shame and scandal to fame and glory in a month -- never have the two faces of Italian football been so sharply contrasting as in the past weeks.
While Italian prosecutors and defence lawyers picked through the details of a domestic match-fixing scandal, at the World Cup Italy's players delivered the perfect reminder of why, despite everything, their game is so respected.
The technique, the flair, the discipline and the passion of Marcello Lippi's team demonstrated all that is best in Italian football and rightly won plaudits crownded by their World Cup triumph over France on penalties.
Back home in Italy though, club officials, referees and Football Federation functionaries faced charges at a disciplinary tribunal with four top clubs facing possible demotion from Serie A if they are found to have tried to influence the outcome of games via interference in refereeing appointments.
Italy's success at the World Cup cannot cancel out what has been revealed about the shenanigans of recent years and nor should the scandal take anything away from what the Azzurri achieved in Germany.
But what Lippi's 23 players did is even more remarkable given the conditions in which they were forced to operate.
Right from the moment the team got together at their plush Coverciano training complex near Florence -- where, according to the transcripts of telephone intercepts, some of the deals under investigation were struck -- the Azzurri had to deal with the fall-out from the scandal.
There were calls for Lippi to resign when his son became involved in a probe into a management agency and demands that captain Fabio Cannavaro be stripped off his position after he publicly defended former Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi, who is at the centre of the scandal.
Keeper Gianluigi Buffon even had to leave the training camp to talk to a magistrate about his gambling on foreign games.
Every news conference centred on the scandal but once the Azzurri landed in Germany, Lippi pleaded for the attention to be placed on his team and their job at the World Cup -- it never quite happened.
TEAM TOGETHERNESS
After weeks of insisting his players were unaffected by the ongoing scandal back home, Lippi said, after the semi-final win over Germany, that his team had actually come together as a result of the affair.
"Certainly, initially, all the confusion that came out two or three months ago created a desire and a determination to respond, to show that Italian football is effective, real and strong on a technical and moral level. It helped to create a tight group," he said.
There was certainly a resentful feeling from the players that they, who have never been accused of any wrongdoing or any kind of involvement in the scandal, did not deserve to be viewed as guilty by association.
"Every time I have gone on the field, I have sweated and given my all," said midfielder Gennaro Gattuso when asked about the scandal.
Gattuso was among those who rejected calls from some politicians for a World Cup win to be rewarded with an amnesty for those accused of wrongdoing.
The performances of Italy's players at the World Cup surely demonstrate that they deserve better from those who run their game. |
