Football/English Premier League: Ronaldo stays
05 Aug 2006

LISBON: Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo, vilified in England for his part in Wayne Rooney抯 sending off at the 2006 World Cup, is staying put at Manchester United, assistant manager Carlos Queiroz said yesterday.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is popular with our club and the fans. The club is used to our players being the target of some dispute when they face other big clubs in England," he told state-run Portuguese radio RDP.

"The circumstances that surrounded the player after the tournament were delicate but the reality of a club is not the reality of a national squad."

Ronaldo抯 future at Old Trafford has been in doubt after he said he wanted to leave England to play in Spain because of the backlash he was facing from some English fans.

The 21-year-old has since said he would be willing to stay at Manchester United but Press reports continue to link him to a move to either Spain or Italy.

Queiroz rejected the reports as "speculation".

"There are two different worlds. There is the real world and there is the world of media speculation," he said.

United抯 Rooney was sent off during the second half of Portugal抯 win over England in the quarter-finals of the World Cup after he stomped on Chelsea抯 Portuguese defender Ricardo Carvalho.

Ronaldo rushed to the referee and appeared to encourage him to send off Rooney, angering England fans.

Portugal went on to win in a penalty shoot-out as Ronaldo scored the decisive spot kick.

Ronaldo joined United in August 2003 from Sporting Lisbon for £12.2 million (RM82 million).

He is under contract with the club until 2010.

Sir Alex may be without stars
Sir Alex Ferguson may have to do without some of the players who took part in the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany for the start of the new season.

Several players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Louis Saha and Mikael Silvestre only returned to training this week, while Gabriel Heinze, Nemanja Vidic and Gary Neville are all injured.

"I think we?e got to start thinking about what the team will be on the first day of the season," Sir Alex told MUTV. "It won? include some of the World Cup players. We'll have to depend on the ones we know are 100 per cent fit, players that have a few games behind them and are really sharp for that opening game."

The United boss will not want that situation to linger on, after stating that poor starts in the last two seasons have cost United dearly.

United skipper Neville, who is struggling with the same calf problem that hampered his World Cup, pulled out of the Amsterdam Tournament as he looks to overcome the injury.

"It's a case of clearing up the problem I had in the summer," said the 31-year-old defender. "It is something to do with my leg length that's causing it, and it keeps recurring."

Neville missed three-and-a-half months at the start of last season due to injury and was sorely missed.

Rooney waits on red card decision
Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping Wayne Rooney will not be handed a suspension after his sending off in the pre-season friendly against FC Porto.

The 20-year-old frontman scored in the 3-1 win but was dismissed four minutes before half time after an aerial challenge with Porto's Pepe. It appeared a harsh decision by referee Ruud Bossen to give a straight red card for an incident Sir Alex described as "innocuous".

The referee can report the incident to the Dutch Football Association, who can in turn can pass it on to the English FA and they could punish Rooney if they feel it necessary to do so. He could miss three matches at the start of the season, which would include Fulham, Charlton and Watford.

"I've seen the incident with Wayne and it was innocuous," Sir Alex told Sky Sports. "You would think common sense and fairness would prevail. It's a ridiculous decision, but we will have to wait and see what happens."

The United boss was disappointed with the reaction of some of Porto's players, adding: "We talk about players diving and play-acting so often that it has become the norm and people accept it now. Of course, we can't allow that. [Pepe] made a meal of it. And I thought the referee should have done better than he did. Ole was elbowed, but the ref warned the player and got on with it."

Sir Alex admitted there was no defence for Scholes' dismissal. The 31-year-old midfielder, who had already been booked, clattered Quaresma from behind in the second half.

"Paul should know better," the boss said. "A straight red card was maybe a bit harsh, but nonetheless it was a tackle from behind, so you can't argue with it."

The Reds also suffered injuries to Rio Ferdinand and John O'Shea. Gabriel Heinze, Nemanja Vidic and Gary Neville are already out and Sir Alex knows too well that United can ill-afford more injuries, which have hampered the Reds at the start of the last two seasons. O'Shea suffered a dead leg and was substituted, while Ferdinand went over on his ankle during the warm-up.

"We've got two weeks before the start of the season so we should hopefully be OK," the manager said. "O'Shea should be out for a few days and hopefully Rio will be ready for the Sevilla game. There was a little bit of swelling around Rio's ankle so you can't take chances after our experiences last year."

The manager praised the young players that dealt with the situation to see out the victory over Porto, while also praising Michael Carrick on his first display in a red shirt.

"Phil Bardsley did well at right-back and then when he switched to centre-half. Then there was Danny Simpson and Lee Martin who both came on. It was terrific to see and they played some good football tonight.

"Carrick was excellent, I was very pleased with him," the boss continued. "He's a good footballer with great awareness and showed good stature in the game
."
