Williams' Patrick Head to retire this year
Williams stalwart Patrick Head will be retiring from Formula 1 at the end of the 2011 season, according to team Chairman Adam Parr. Now 65, Head entered the sport with Frank Williams in 1977 and has since celebrated 113 race wins and nine Constructors’ Championship titles – a figure second only to Ferrari.
“Patrick has made it clear that he’ll be retiring this year so, at some point this year, that will happen,” Parr explained to reporters in a Tuesday news conference.
“That is nothing to do with the (technical) restructuring of the team, but it's just the fact that he's turning 65 now and had already signalled that it was time for him to move on to his next set of interests in life.” |

Craig Pollock establishes PURE engine company
It has been revealed that former BAR Team Principal Craig Pollock is to return to Formula 1 with the new PURE customer engine supplier. The company, officially launching on Thursday, is developing a turbocharged, 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder hybrid engine which will comply with the new regulations of 2013 and beyond.
Ahead of a new technical era for the sport, encouraged by FIA President Jean Todt in order to lower costs and increase environmentally-friendly elements, Pollock is making his comeback after being the man behind BAR’s entrance to the grid in 1999. The Scot also served as manager to 1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve.
After the FIA announced the changes last December, PURE (Propulsion Universelle et Recuperation d’Energie) has been set up and joined by partners TEOS, Mecachrome, D2T and IFP Energies Nouvelles – all labelled as specialists in powertrain design.
“The vision for PURE. is to be a leader in the development of the next generation powertrain technology which must respond to the demands for a cleaner environment,” Pollock comments. “The 2013 Formula 1 powertrain regulation changes offer PURE an immediate platform to field test and validate future technologies for implementation in other industries.
“We have assembled an expert team, the finest technology partners and have received positive encouragement from the FIA.” |

Craig Pollock
Craig Pollock is CEO and Founder of PURE. He began his career in Formula 1 in 1993 as manager for driver Jacques Villeneuve, who won the 1997 Formula 1 World Championship. In 1998, Craig established Formula 1 team British American Racing (BAR) with Villeneuve as lead driver. He remained manager of Villeneuve until 2008. In 2003, Pollock formed CART team PK Racing. Craig remained as co-owner of the team until 2004.
Robin Southwell
Robin Southwell is non-executive chairman of PURE He has had a career in aerospace and defence spanning some 30 years and is currently CEO of EADS UK. He brings considerable experience of managing complex engineering challenges and delivering strategies in intense business environments often within a demanding international dimension. He sits on numerous UK industry and aerospace committees such as the CBI President’s committee and the board of the Farnborough International Airshow. He was appointed OBE in 1999.
Christian Contzen
Christian Contzen is Consultant to the board of PURE and architect of Renault’s success in Formula 1. He joined Renault in 1960 and held the positions of Dealership Director, Commercial Director and Marketing Director, before becoming Managing Director of Renault Sport in 1991. During this time he led the operation through the successful years with the Williams Formula 1 team, winning the World Championship with Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve. Christian also played a major part in providing engines to the World Championship-winning Benetton team in 1995.
Jean-Pierre Boudy
Jean-Pierre Boudy is a senior design engineer for TEOS and an expert in 4-cylinder turbo charged engines, having been responsible for all Renault Formula One engines in the ‘70s and ‘80s. He worked with Bernard Dudot on the Formula 1 Renault engine prototype which made its race debut in 1977. Jean-Pierre went on to run the engine research and development department for Renault Sport, before moving to Peugeot Talbot Sport as head of the engine department. |

Todt welcomes PURE to Formula 1
FIA President Jean Todt has embraced the entrance of the PURE Corporation to Formula 1 ahead of the 2013 season. Established by former BAR Team Principal Craig Pollock, its turbocharged, 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder powerplant will comply with the radical new technical regulations outlined by Todt last December.
“We welcome PURE to Formula 1,” said the Frenchman. “The rule changes for 2013 have been developed to provide lower cost, greener and more fuel efficient technologies for Formula 1. We wish PURE every success in developing powertrains compliant with the new FIA regulations.”
The new technical rules were put forward as Todt wishes to lower running costs and encourage more environmentally-friendly technologies in motorsport. |

FIA confirms Istanbul DRS zone
Formula 1 governing body the FIA has confirmed where the Drag Reduction System (DRS) will be operational in this weekend’s Turkish Grand Prix.
To be able to use the system when racing another car from Lap 3 onwards, the chasing vehicle must be within one second of that in front by the DRS Detection Zone, which is located several metres before Turn 10.
If the margin is one second or less, the system will then be useable between Turns 11 and 12, which features the straight on which leaders Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel came to blows last year. This also means that, for the first time, DRS will be useable in a corner during the race.
For practice and qualifying, usage of the system remains unlimited. |

Leading teams to discuss future of F1
It has emerged that Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes are set to meet in Stuttgart next week in order to discuss the future of Formula 1. According to The Telegraph, leading representatives of the aforementioned outfits will discuss the new Concorde Agreement plus engine rule changes and the sport’s commercial rights.
A number of hot topics have emerged over recent weeks, with the Concorde Agreement – which binds teams with governing body the FIA plus commercial rights holders such as Bernie Ecclestone – set to expire at the end of next year.
As well as discussing the FIA’s proposals for turbocharged, 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder engines from 2013 onwards, it is also expected that Red Bull, McLaren and Mercedes will question Ferrari over their possible joint takeover of the sport.
At present, Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation is looking to buy out CVC Capital Partners by forming a consortium alongside EXOR – an Italian investment company which is owned by the same Agnelli family behind Fiat and therefore Ferrari. |

Todt pushing to bring back in-season testing
FIA President Jean Todt says that in-season F1 tests will be back in place by the 2013 season at the latest. Labelling the current ban as ‘stupid’, the Frenchman points out that tests will return as early as next year if all teams agree to the suggestion.
At present, testing is limited to four meetings pre-season plus the Young Driver gathering in November. However, Todt is keen to scrap the ban on in-season running which was brought in under Max Mosley’s FIA presidency for 2009 onwards.
Instead, he is hoping to introduce three two-day tests during the campaign, particularly to allow up and coming drivers more opportunities in Formula 1 cars.
“It’s a stupid decision to have no testing during the season,” Todt explained to the press at Istanbul Park prior to Sunday’s Turkish Grand Prix. “Yes, in the past it was crazy to have unlimited testing during the year, but to go from unlimited to complete banned wasn’t the right decision.
“It doesn't allow young drivers to test and pick up some experience, but I will make sure this situation changes for the future. We’re pushing for a few days of free testing during the season as soon as possible, but obviously respecting the current rules (meaning all teams must agree if a change if to be accepted).”
A return of in-season testing would avoid situations such as that in Hungary two years ago, when Toro Rosso debutant Jaime Alguersuari was forced to begin his maiden Grand Prix weekend without having driven a Formula 1 car around a corner. |
