SATURDAY'S PRE-SEASON FRIENDLIES
Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick is set to miss the start of the Barclays Premiership season after picking up a foot injury during the 1-0 pre-season win over Ajax.

On only his second appearance since completing an £18.6million move from Tottenham Hotspur, Carrick lasted just 14 minutes before being helped off after a tackle from behind by Kenneth Perez.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson revealed the England international could be out for a few weeks, which would rule Carrick out of the Barclays Premiership opener against Fulham on August 20.

Ferguson told Sky Sports: 揑t looks like he抣l be out for a few weeks - there抯 a lot of swelling and bleeding.

揑t抯 a ligament to the front of the foot. Hopefully it won抰 be too long but it could be a few weeks. It抯 terrible luck.

Report: Ajax 0 United 1

United won the LG Amsterdam Tournament on Saturday night after beating the hosts Ajax with a late goal from Ryan Giggs.

The Welsh veteran struck a free-kick in off the underside of the crossbar, following a foul on Giuseppe Rossi in the 76th minute.

It wasn't all good news for Sir Alex Ferguson's men, however. New signing Michael Carrick, playing his second game for the club in two days, was withdrawn after just 16 minutes with an ankle injury. He hobbled from the pitch, and was on crutches when he collected the first of hopefully many winners' medals with United.

It was the first time in four attempts that United had won this competition. They achieved it with ten points - three for each victory over Porto and Ajax, plus one bonus point for each goal they scored (four).

Sir Alex Ferguson was forced to make several changes to the side which had beaten Porto just 24 hours earlier. Rio Ferdinand and John O扴hea were unavailable because of injury, so Jonny Evans formed the centre-back partnership with Wes Brown, having flown over from Manchester earlier in the day.

Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes were, of course, missing from the line-up after being dismissed against Porto.

United, playing in a change kit of all blue, started the match knowing that a victory by any score would be enough to win them the Amsterdam Tournament for the first time.
