Italy抯 World Cup heroes were named as World Team of the Year at the Laureus awards, it was announced in Barcelona on Monday.

The Azzurri lifted the honour after their heroics during Germany 2006 when they were crowned world champions for the fourth time in their history.

Italy captain and Real Madrid stopper Fabio Cannavaro failed to win the World Sportsman of the Year award though.

The defender, the FIFA and European Footballer of the Year, was beaten to the top spot by the world's top tennis player Roger Federer.

Italy have moved back to the top of the FIFA World Rankings after Argentina抯 reign lasted for just a month.

The South Americans had ousted the Azzurri in March to lead the standings for the first time in their history.

However, Italy抯 2-0 win over Scotland was enough for the World Cup winners to take the leadership again.

Other changes in the Top 10 saw the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain all move up one position, while England and the Czech Republic both slipped back after a draw in Israel and a defeat to Germany respectively.

The next FIFA World Rankings will be published on May 16, 2007.
