AIMED at providing Bruneians with wholesome family entertainment that is both educational and eye opening was the objective pointed out by Chua PhengChai, Playground Manager, during the colourful launch of the Dazzling Festival of Lights Exhibit last night at Jerudong Park Gardens.
"Acolourful festival of this nature and scale will not only give Bruneians a good reason to enjoy their holiday and festive season in Brunei, it will also draw in more tourists from our neighbouring Sabahand Sarawak," added the manager.
Director of Brunei Tourism,Sheikh Jamaluddin Sheikh Mohammad, said that injecting life back into Jerudong Park Playgrounds is the target as it is known as one of thetop tourist attractions in Brunei. He added that it is sad to see the attraction go to waste as many of the rides have been forced to shutdown due to high maintenance costs.
"This is why we've brought in these attractions and organise events of this nature," said the director as he pointed out the reason behind the many activities and functions being held at the park lately.
Six-year-old Hui Tingand her cousins seemed ecstatic when the lights went on as the musical fountain played Disney tunes that she recognised.
Playing around among the animals and taking photos against the backdrop of the Jame'Asr mosque and the Eiffel Tower, Hui Ting and her cousins were quite agroup to follow, said their parents as they were seen running around chasing after them.
Among the displays are many of the worlds wonders such as the Taj Mahal in India, Italy's Leaning Tower of Pisa, the French Eiffel Tower and Brunei's Jame' 'Asr Mosque which lit up the night sky.
The organisers decorated the whole area with chinese lanterns, mythical dragons, animals and prehistoric dinosaurs with mechanical moving parts and sound effects.
Launching the festival was the acting Minister of Home Affairs, Pehin Orang Kaya Dewa Pahlawan Dato Paduka Haji Dani Haji Ibrahim.
The Dazzling festival of lights will continue to dazzle until January 6, 2008.

FOUR weeks ago, a 12.19m container was delivered here in Brunei filled with raw materials and yards of silk.
Withthe help of 20 workers and creative designers, what was once bits and pieces of metal and silk was magnificently transformed into what willbe the main attraction at Jerudong Park starting this weekend, TheDazzling Festival of Lights.
The Dazzling Festival of Lights, organised by Jerudong Park Playgrounds, A Fortune International and SkyWave Marketing and Management Services, is a year-end family attraction for the Bruneian public.
The event, opening on December 15, will last for three weeks and will be an addition to the end-of-year activities held at the Jerudong Park, which include the cartoon andmusic festival that was launched on December 7.
According to the Director of AFortune International, Tony Lim, the 20 workers spent nearly 10,000 man-hours to prepare the displays of animals and mythical creatures that will be showcased throughout the event.
Life-sized pandas, rhinos, monkeys and dragons will be part of the display alongside 30:1 size scale of several wonders of the world.
TheTaj Mahal, Angkor Wat, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Eiffel Tower and theJame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah are among landmarks that will be featured inthe festival.
Singapore-based AFortune International has been bringing these wonders of the world to many countries over the years,to the delight of the public.
To have sculptures such as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which is made out of ceramic bowls and plates and teacups, or the Chinese Pagodas, made out of silk and wires in Brunei, said the director, will be a sight to behold especially against the backdrop of the musical fountains and the beautiful Jerudong ParkGardens.
The animals, he added, will be scattered all over thegarden to provide for a more festive ambience especially with the soundeffects and dazzling lights.
