Nesta may not return for Italy, says Donadoni

MILAN, May 29 (Reuters) - AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta may have quit the Italian national side for good, coach Roberto Donadoni said on Tuesday.

Nesta was not included in Donadoni's squad for the Euro 2008 qualifiers in Faroe Islands on Saturday and Lithuania a week on Wednesday after asking to be left out as he is getting married.

However, the coach said his absence may now be much longer.

'I hope it was just an off-the-cuff remark or at least I try to be optimistic as it seemed his choice was definite,' Donadoni told reporters as his squad gathered for training at their base near Florence.

Nesta missed out on playing in Italy's World Cup final win over France last July through injury and other knocks have meant he has only featured once since in the 3-1 victory in Georgia in October.

Nesta follows Francesco Totti in walking away from the national team.

AS Roma striker Totti, who was Serie A's top scorer this season with 26 goals, has not played for Italy since the World Cup and has shown no inclination of wanting to return.

'Everyone is free to choose what they think is right. I do not interpret it as a refusal to play for the world champions, more a decision about their current condition,' Donadoni added.

'Whoever joins up must be fit, but also must be committed and motivated. I have talked with Totti and Nesta, accepting the justifications they have given me. Have I tried to convince them? I have done what was right but there is a limit.

'I repeat, for my point of view there is no problem.'

Italy are fourth in Group B, two points behind leaders Ukraine, Scotland and France.

'SuperPippo' Gets Azzurri Recall

'Pippo' Inzaghi has been rewarded for his clinical finishing, with Roberto Donadoni making space for him in the Azzurri squad.

The Milan poacher has been named in the squad for Italy's Euro qualifiers against Faroe Islands and Lithuania.

With Luca Toni out with a foot injury, Inzaghi cuold well start up front, though Lucarelli, Quagliarella, Rocchi, Di Natale and Del Piero have all been called up.
Italy are currently fourth in Group B, but only two points behind joint leaders France, Ukraine and Scotland.

Squad
Goalkeepers: Abbiati (Torino), Amelia (Livorno), Buffon (Juventus);
Defenders: Barzagli (Palermo), Cannavaro (Real Madrid), Gamberini (Fiorentina), Materazzi (Inter), Oddo (Milan), Pasqual (Fiorentina), Tonetto (Roma), Zambrotta (Barcelona);
Midfielders: Diana (Palermo), De Rossi, Perrotta (Roma), Ambrosini, Gattuso, Pirlo (Milan);
Forwards: Del Piero (Juventus), Di Natale (Udinese), Inzaghi (Milan), Lucarelli (Livorno), Quagliarella (Sampdoria), Rocchi (Lazio).

Italy lambasted after Faroes escape

MILAN, June 3 (Reuters) - World champions Italy returned home to a chorus of criticism on Sunday after they scraped a 2-1 win against the Faroe Islands in Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier.

Filippo Inzaghi scored twice before carpenter Rogvi Jacoben pulled one back after 77 minutes for the Faroes, ranked 185 in the world, to leave Italy sweating for the last few minutes despite the cold and constant rain.

Italy's win moved them up to second in Group B behind France, who beat Ukraine 2-0.

'Luckily there is Inzaghi,' said the Gazzetta dello Sport, but coach Roberto Donadoni was unconcerned.

'What counts is the win and the three points,' he told reporters. 'We had chances to score some more goals and at the end it was difficult.'

Palermo's Aimo Diana, a surprise pick in Italy's midfield who set-up Inzaghi's second, was confident they would play better in Lithuania on Wednesday. Italy have returned home for two days before departing to Kaunas on Tuesday.

'We didn't play very well. Despite the weather conditions we should not have lost our concentration. I think that Italy as world champions must go to Lithuania to win,' he said.

Totti Promises Return To Azzurri Squad - Report

The captain of Roma declared that he will be ready to play for the Italian national side from this summer.

Exactly a year after announcing that he will take a long break from the world cup winning Azzurri side, Francesco Totti has decided that it is time to make a comeback in the most important phase of the Euro Qualifiers.

This was reported by the daily Italian newspaper 'Il Messaggero', who quoted Totti as saying that after the summer holidays, he will respond to the call-ups of current Italian national team coach Roberto Donadoni.

"I'll go for a holiday and then I will call (Gigi) Riva," declared the Roma player who has turned down all call-ups since the world cup final.

"I'm ready for the important matches of Italy," confirmed Totti.

This will be an important boost for the Azzurri who will be facing Ukraine and Scotland away from home, and hosting France in the coming months.

We Played A Bad Game, Admits Diana

The Italian midfielder however denied that the Azzurri were lacking concentration on the field against minnows Faroe Islands.

Aimo Diana was maybe one of the few Italian players who had a good game on Saturday evening, however that was not enough to avoid a terrible performance for the Azzurri.

"We surely did not have a good game," admitted the Palermo player. "On the contrary, towards the ends we even risked to lose our face, but don't say that we were not concentrated because it's not true."

The former Sampdoria player also revealed what happened in the dressing room soon after the end of the match.

"In the dressing rooms we spoke with each other and we understood that we played very badly and we don't want to risk like this anymore," declared Diana.

Italy will now be facing Lithuania on Wednesday, in a game the Azzurri need to win in order to maintain their second place in the standings ahead of the delicate games away to Scotland and Ukraine and at home against France in the coming months.

Totti And Nesta Warned Of Sanctions By FIGC

The Italian Football Federation have warned Francesco Totti and Alessandro Nesta that a failure to answer a national call-up could result in serious problems for them, and asked them to come clean.

FIGC President Giancarlo Abete has warned against players refusing to turn up for international duty, in as many words.

Nesta and Totti have both ruled themselves out of international football for the time being, and Abete insists that it is not good enough
.

While he has no problems with the verbal understanding they seem to have with coach Roberto Donaoni, which is seeing them not being called up, he has insisted that it cannot be the case for the future.

"platini抯 comment [that players be banned heavily for staying away from national teams] was entirely plausible and is shared by the Federation rules, as players who refuse the international call are in for suspension." said Abete.

Nesta, who seems to be ready to hang up his boots for good, got the lighter of the treatment.

"This is a difficult situation, though, as Nesta has asked to walk away after giving a great deal to the Nazionale and the Coach has agreed to let him take this move," he continued.

"We hope he will change his mind and that Totti can return in September, as he hinted, because Italy needs a player of his talent."

He then dropped his warning, suggesting that the Roma skipper needed to clarify his future once and for all, and either reach an understanding and retire for good, or make himself available.

"Right now Totti and Roberto Donadoni have discussed the matter and agreed to accept that decision. If Totti is called and he refuses, then that will be different.

"We will not arrive at September living in hope. We have to prepare for the future and that means knowing who will be with us and who will not."

Zambrotta Upset By Totti's "Important" Decision

Barcelona midfielder Gianluca Zambrotta is not exactly jumping with joy at Totti's decision to re-join the national team.

It seems that the manner in which Francesco Totti announced his decision to return to the national team has not gone down too well.

In particular, the comment that he would now be back for the "important" games has created a stir of sorts.

"I'm ready for Italy's important matches," Totti had said on Monday morning.

While Inter Milan defender Marco Materazzi had defender the Roma skipper, insisting that he was being misunderstood, Zambrotta has made his contrasting views on the matter abundantly clear.

"I抦 just looking to forge a group spirit with players who are here rather than those who are not," said the full-back tersely.

"I don抰 want to cause any controversy, but if you care about the Azzurri shirt, then you must care about it all the time, and not just in the important games.

"This is just my point of view though and not a criticism."

Italy have crucial qualifying games against France, Ukraine and Scotland at the start of next season.

Totti Moves To Clear The Air

Francesco Totti has released the following statement on his website in a bid to avert the controversy following his statements yesterday, when he had said he was ready to return for the "important" games...

"As I prepare to leave for a holiday with my family, I am sorry to see that everyone抯 attention is focused on my presence in the Italy squad.

"This is not fair towards my teammates and friends who will play on Wednesday.

"I believe that we should hail the entire group, rather than concentrate on the individuals.

"This team was able to react to the crisis of Italian football and is trying with its hard work to continue what was started in Germany.

"I think I have proved my affection for the Azzurri jersey and my teammates last year.

"I am sure these men can keep on giving Italians moments of great joy, with or without Totti.

"As to my plans, when I return from my holidays I will speak to Donadoni and Gigi Riva, and we will decide together what is the best thing to do.

"Now we must only support the Nazionale and avoid useless controversy."
