Quagliarella Leads Italy To Precious Win

The Sampdoria forward scored a brace to help the Azzurri maintain their second place in the standings of Group B

Italy put the terrible match against Faroe Islands behind their backs with an excellent performance against Lithuania to avenge the first leg result (1-1).

It was a convincing and determined performance by the entire Azzurri side who took the match into their hands right from the start with Di Natale and Quagliarella going close after just a few minutes of play.

The Italian side kept on pressing until Quagliarella managed to open the score for the World Champions in the 30th minute when his shot from 20 metres went past the helpless Grybauskas.

Lithuania could have equalized in the 42nd minute when Mikoliunas all alone in front of Buffon missed the opportunity to score thanks to the Juventus goalkeeper's reflexes, and three minutes later Quagliarella punished the home side with his second goal of the night. Once again it was a shot from the distance which the opposing goalkeeper could do nothing to stop it from entering his goal.

In the second half Italy held the match in its hands and could have added the third goal, however mostly due to the Azzurri's poor finishing, the result did not change as the match slowly came to an end , with the Italian side controlling the encounter without risking anything in defence.

This is an important win for Roberto Donadoni's team, as the Italians kept in touch with France, who defeated Georgia, and still maintained the lead over Scotland before next September's decisive encounters against Les Bleus and Ukraine for the qualification race

Di Natale Rues Missed Scoring Opportunities

Antonio Di Natale is disappointed at not having been able to hit the back of the net against Lithuania.

The Udinese forward has made 10 appearances for the Azzurri and so far he scored 2 goals.

During Wednesday's Euro qualifier against Lithuania, he had several scoring opportunities, but failed to convert them.

"It抯 a shame I was unable to break my drought, as I had some good chances, but the result was the important thing," he said.

"We played well and I combined with Gianluca Zambrotta down the left, so we had a good performance with this system," he continued.

"It was tougher than it looked on Saturday in the Faroe Islands and again the crucial thing was to get the three points.

"It is a great honour to be here, as these are legends all around us and we have so much to learn from the World Cup winners."

Del Piero Targeting 100 Matches For The Azzurri

The Juventus captain has played 83 times for the Italian national side following last night's match against Lithuania which the Azzurri won 2-0.

Alessandro Del Piero has made it no secret that he would like to reach the important target of 100 matches for the Italian national team, an objective which is well within his reach.

"I hope I can reach that target," declared the Juventus forward when asked about the 100 international matches.

"I was really looking forward to this match, I'm pleased with the observations and compliments. As an 'oldie' I hope to give the good example: today the young players who played have done well, therefore I'm satisfied.

"It's a good thing that Quagliarella steals the headlines of the newspapers, he's very good and it's fair that in the matches, those who shine are those who are playing and not those who aren't."

Finally, Del Piero commented the appointment of Claudio Ranieri as coach of the Bianconeri.

"His curriculum speaks on its own; we can work straight away to do well like we all hope."

Italy call up keeper Curci for Hungary friendly
MILAN (Reuters) - Italy coach Roberto Donadoni has given a first senior call-up to AS Roma goalkeeper Gianluca Curci for Wednesday's friendly in Hungary. The 22-year-old, battling with Brazilian Doni for the number one jersey at Roma, has made the step up from the under-21s. Donadoni also surprisingly brought back Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani and Sampdoria's Angelo Palombo, with the likes of Daniele De Rossi short of match fitness. The coach, without retired pair Francesco Totti and Alessandro Nesta, was forced to pick the squad without seeing a competitive game after the league ignored his pleas and decided to start Serie A next weekend. The world champions are second in Euro 2008 Group B qualifying and play leaders France in Milan on September 8. Goalkeepers: Marco Amelia (Livorno), Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Gianluca Curci (AS Roma) Defenders: Andrea Barzagli (Palermo), Fabio Cannavaro (Real Madrid), Fabio Grosso (Olympique Lyon), Marco Materazzi (Inter Milan), Massimo Oddo (AC Milan), Cristian Zaccardo (Palermo), Gianluca Zambrotta (Barcelona) Midfielders: Massimo Ambrosini (AC Milan), Alberto Aquilani (AS Roma), Aimo Diana (Palermo), Gennaro Gattuso (AC Milan), Angelo Palombo (Sampdoria), Andrea Pirlo (AC Milan) Forwards: Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus), Antonio Di Natale (Udinese), Filippo Inzaghi (AC Milan), Fabio Quagliarella (Udinese), Luca Toni (Bayern Munich).

azzurri with a life after totti and nesta . other defenders yg ade dlm world cup team semua ade lg.

Italy Stunned By Hungary In Second Half Blitz

Hungary 3-1 Italy

The Azzurri failed to strike top form ahead of their two big tests against France and Ukraine, as Hungary scored thrice in sixteen minutes to come from behind and pick up a superb 3-1 win.

Roberto Donadoni used an attacking philospophy for the game, with Quagliarella, Aquilani and Del Piero playing behind Toni, but it was a formation that failed to deliver the desired results despite showing glimpses of promise.

After a first half that the Azzurri had shaded - and almost taken the lead in but for a Luca Toni goal being disallowed - they went ahead in the 49th minute through substitute Antonio Di Natale, who deflected in a shot from Pippo Inzaghi.

However, that was the only joy they would have, as Hungary hit three in sixteen minutes just after the hour mark to condemn them to defeat.

Defender Roland Juh醩z began the come-back in the 62nd minute. Zambrotta's fluffed clearance was headed to him, and he moved clear of Fabio Cannavaro and beat Buffon with a sweetly struck left-footed volley.

Five minutes later, Cannavaro felled Tamas Priskin in the area and Zoltan Gera made no mistake from the spot to put the Hungarians ahead.

A further ten minutes on, the result was sealed for good, thanks to another error from Cannavaro, who was having a howler of a night. Gera took the ball off him, drew Buffon out, and then unselfishly passed it to young striker Robert Feczesin to slot in with ease.

Italy came close with a Fabio grosso free-kick and a Massimo Ambrosini volley, but the result was never in doubt once Hungary had a two goal cushion.

Donadoni will be clearly disappointed with both the result and the performance with just two weeks to go before the all-important clashes against France and Ukraine. The blame will surely be placed on the Azzurri's physical condition, considering that Serie A has not yet started and most Italian players are without any competitive matches in their legs and the goals conceded in the last 30 minutes is the proof that fatigue was a major issue in tonight's game.

However, that should not be an excuse for the World Champions who are still clearly stronger than their Hungarian opponents. Things are not looking very positively for the Azzurri and Donadoni will need to get the best out of his squad if Italy is to reach the European Championships of next year.
