there must be something there
do you think being concealed make them feeling oppressed?
i don't know why, but i've always dreamt of wearing purdah for one matter
so ppl don't judge me based on my look only...hmph...

finished reading A Thousand Splendid Suns last 2 weeks.
engrossing! ada ka that word? dictionary too far from my reach.
anyway, purdah or burqa' has always been the option whenever a women felt unsafe. mcm that book pun ckp sbb husband dia suruh pakai, memula Mariam rasa tak selesa tapi lama2 best plak sbb u can be anonymous behind the black coverings. like u said, people wont judge you based on our looks only. its a good book for us, Muslim ladies.
some banks in the western world wouldnt deal with you even if you have your sunnies, hats or burqa' on. i think in terms of professionalism, they need to identify you and be in personal with the transaction. mata ke mata la gitu.
heck i think all people have the perogrative to wear whatever they want. be it sexy, concealing ker, i dont think it would tick me off but i sometimes kesian dgn org yg ingat dgn meniru sesuatu budaya kita dah maju setapak.   hmm..i think if our judgement is based on copy-catting something without proper evaluation, that is pure stupidity & sick!

just finished reading this. my verdict: it's too predictable even though i wasn't disappointed with it. but, the taliban regime is told in one sided way only, it seemed like you don't know the truth about afghanistan itself. never expected much since khaled hosseini is an american, btw. i was a bit traumatised regarding the rape that happened - in my opinion, it shouldn't be something like that. maybe aseef should beat hassan until he's bruised badly.

makes me wonder though, is homosexual rape really rampant in afghanistan or was it some isolated incident? i don't know. i just don't like the way, religion being treated in this book. as much as the hero confessed he doesn't pray, does it really have to show that he's just too modernised?

ah..i get what you mean... i think i got carried away jugak lah. because i do hate people using religion to defend their stand and the manipulation of it.
betul la u ckp, hosseini is too American and i dont really know about the real situation in Afghan. my window to Afghan was solely from his books, for now.
kalo google 'homosexual rape in afghanistan' ada la kuar a few things but not alarming kot. maybe isolated cases.

i would really like to explore the other side of the story regarding taliban, since the stories/news i read are always bashing them. the way bazuki mohamad portrayed afghanistan in his pictures, it seemed not bad as it was told by westerners. hmph...

surprisingly, even though i'm a bit disappointed with the kite runner, i was carried away with a thousand splendid sun. i finished reading it in one day, engrossing, i wasn't able to put it down. i believe the issue played in the novel is something we can relate to worldwide. domestic abuse, child out of wedlock. i admire the strength of both mariam & laila - the special bond between them. the first two parts were a bit slow even though it had to be told since it's crucial to the current events, but the pace quickened when the women became friends.  i was touched with one event where laila received a package from mariam's late father, particularly when the pinnochio's animation was screened. interestingly, i found the book focus on mariam & laila, rather than on taliban as whole.

Khalid Hosseini of The Kite Runner

Aku baru jer baca novel dia The Kite Runner dan baca review A Thousand Splendid Suns. Aku bukan nak discuss pasal dia punya creative writing, tapi nak discuss dengan korang pasal dia punya pemikiran, aku tengok dalam penulisannya yg dia ni agak pro-Western dan besar kemungkinan cuba memberikan imej negatif kepada pihak Taliban dalam novel2 dia. Cuba korang baca kritikan ilmiah terhadap 1st novel dia : http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2008/01/05/6192

What do u guys think?

yesterday baru tgk movie dia....mmg lawa sgt sceneries kat afghan. the FIRST movie i watched when i read the book.
Khaled Hosseini ni mcm pro-Western. i think because childhood dia jugak kot. n then dia mestila tau selok belok negara dia sendirik.
so that bile omputih baca buku dia ni kate afghan nyer social strata ada prob la, apa la...suke la depa. lelagi bile the author pegi US utk build a new life. i think konon2 mcm indebted to the new country to succeed...
anyway, i loved the movie, i liked the 2 kids...pandai betul belakon.
kali ni nak cari buku yg tak dipublished from US plak. nak tgk taliban ni as bad as they are saying or not.

i have just finished reading this book

my review:
- first part slow but engaging.. about amryam's story, how she was raised, she is a lso a harami (anak luar nikah) of her mom with her employer. so her mom was banished to live up the hill. and at 15, maryam was married to rasheed.. who is 20-30 years older than her
- 2nd part, laila: a bit slow also, but i am more engrossed with maryam's story. just a tad sad about laila's mom though
-3rd part: very interesting! i do speed reading after this.. finished the whole book yesterday, this part is where maryam and laila's life entwiined with each other. i am so so engrossed with it, maryam, the silent type while laila, the outgoing type, the clashes of their personalities. how they live with each other
- the ending: i cried when i read maryam's father letter. and i am so happy for laila

and yes, i would recommend his book to others, due to the fact of so many unexpected things happening in the story

just a bit sad, due to the fact of khaled hosseini keep bashing talibans..
