Korea Gets First Win of the World Cup

PORTELIZABETH, South Africa (AP)—South Korea opened the World Cup like itwanted to repeat its 2002 run to the semifinals. Greece looked like itwas stuck in 1994.
Lee Jung-soo and Park Ji-sung each scored and South Korea won 2-0 over lackluster Greece in Saturday’s first Group B match.
“Ifwe had been a little bit calmer, we could have had an even betterresult,” South Korea coach Huh Jung-moo said. “In terms of scoringgoals, it could have been a little bit better for us.”
Playingin its seventh consecutive World Cup—including its 2002 appearance inthe semifinals, when it co-hosted the tournament with Japan—South Koreacontrolled the tempo from its first scoring chance on.
Greecehas only been to the tournament once before, in 1994. Back then, theGreeks let Argentina score just two minutes into the opening game. TheGreeks improved this time around—by five minutes.
KiSung-yong curled in a free kick from near the left corner flag in theseventh minute, and the ball brushed the top of KonstantinosKatsouranis’ head before reaching Lee at the far post. The centraldefender tapped it into an unguarded net.
Park Ji-sung doubled the lead in the 52nd with a slick solo goal.
TheManchester United midfielder intercepted a misplaced pass from VassilisTorosidis and skipped past two defenders before slipping a shot beyondgoalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas.
Striker Park Chu-younghad another three chances to score for South Korea, and Fanis Gekas hada shot saved with 10 minutes left in what was Greece’s best chance.
Greece coach Otto Rehhagel stood on the sideline at the end of the match, his hands on his hips and a fierce scowl on his face.
“Wereally have to get our act together,” Rehhagel said. “We’ve got toimprove a couple of things and be brave and courageous enough.”
Nigeria and Argentina played Saturday in the other Group B match.
Ina stadium that was about two-thirds full, South Korea spent much of theopening minutes giving the ball away to the former European championsand defending desperately. But South Korea converted on its firstopportunity.
“We conceded that really quick goal,” Alexandros Tziolis said. “It took us by surprise and threw us off our game.”
Rehhagel replaced captain Giorgos Karagounis at the half, but South Korea continued to dominate and Park Ji-sung made it 2-0.
“Wesaid we shouldn’t sit on our laurels and we should attack,” Huh said.“I said at halftime that we would have more opportunities and we shouldtake advantage.”
Torosidis gave the ball away to Parkmidway inside his own half. Park surged forward and beat two slidingtackles before scoring with a low shot.
Back in SouthKorea, where nearly 1 million people watched the game at publicgatherings, a busy Seoul boulevard turned into a sea of red withscreams of joy reverberating among the tall buildings. Strangers huggedeach other in elation and jumped in unison.
Greecemustered only a couple of blocked shots and appealed desperately for alate penalty when Gekas’ shot hit a defender. The South Korean had hisarms raised, but replays showed the ball hit his body.
Gekas then unleashed a shot from about 12 yards and goalkeeper Jung Sung-ryong punched it over the bar.
TheGreeks will go for their first-ever World Cup win against Nigeria nextSaturday, when central defender Vangelis Moras should be fit to returnfrom a persistent groin injury.
“I think it was a fairresult. We didn’t play well,” Tziolis said. “We have very few options.There’s no other option than to go all out.”

huh..smlm layan bola gan supporter Korea kat Ampang....
wah best giler...bila score aje terutama nyer time Park Ji Sung score kita org sorak bagai nak giler..sampai seorg member tu x perasaan bag camera sampai putus tali..
nanti bel akan upload gambar2 yg bel ambik tu nanti...
dan lagi klu masa S.Korea VS Nigeria
bel rasa Korea akan byk peluang utk score sbb tgk persembahan permainan Nigeria masa lawan Argentina tu diorg ni nampak terlampau nervous tul...peluang byk tul dipersiakan....
tapi utk masa ni goal keeper yg best so far adalah S.Korea dan Nigeria.... |

Warga Korea hangatkan Piala Dunia
KUALA LUMPUR - Demam Piala Dunia menghangatkan ibu negara apabila lebih 1,000 warga Korea Selatan di negara ini berkumpul di beberapa lot kedai dekat 'Little Korea', Ampang bagi menunjukkan sokongan padu ke atas skuad pasukan tersebut menentang Greece.
Perlawanan yang ditayangkan secara terbuka menerusi skrin dua muka di tepi jalan mula dikunjungi orang ramai seawal 7.00 petang.
Rata-rata peminat Korea Selatan yang hadir terdiri daripada komuniti rakyat Korea yang menetap di sekitar Lembah Klang.
Turut kelihatan, sekolompok gadis tempatan yang turut sama-sama memakai baju berwarna merah tertulis 'Passion of Korea for the FIFA World Cup!' sebagai tanda sokongan ke atas skuad Taeguk Warriors.
Kira-kira lima minit sebelum berlangsungnya perlawanan yang disiarkan secara langsung menerusi saluran Astro Supersport, paluan gendang bergema disambut beberapa laungan 'Korea Boleh' dan 'Malaysia Boleh.'
Suasana semakin rancak dan meriah apabila peminat melaungkan 'Hanguk' yang bermaksud Korea apabila pemain pertahanan, Lee Jung Soo menjaringkan gol pertama kurang sepuluh minit selepas perlawanan bermula.
Peminat fanatik Korea Selatan, Noraliah Ghazali, 19, berkata dia dan rakannya hadir memberikan sokongan kepada skuad Asia tersebut yang berpotensi untuk mara ke peringkat separuh akhir seperti pada kejohanan lalu.
Sementara itu, seorang rakyat Korea, Lee Dong Woo, 23, optimis skuad pasukan Korea Selatan mampu untuk mara ke peringkat seterusnya kerana mempunyai barisan pemain yang mantap termasuk pemain tengah berbakat iaitu Park Ji Sung.
Korea Selatan menewaskan Greece pada perlawanan pembukaan dengan agregat 2-0.
