Malaysian hand in 2012 Olympics
WHO says naivety won’t get you anywhere? For architect Faizal Mohd Ali, 36, it has taken him everywhere, fulfilling his well charted dreams.
With his impressive qualifications in the field of science, he could be anything he wanted, but the former MRSM student, who left at the age of 17 to study in Warwick and later went on to the University of Bath, chose to be an architect thinking that if he built hospitals, he’d be working with doctors and if he built airports he’d be working with pilots.
So, as a keen sportsman, to work with one of the world’s foremost sports and events architects who are involved in the London Olympics and Paralympic Games, it was indeed a dream come true.
Faizal came to work for Populous, the official Architectural and Overlay Design Services Provider to the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games, which had been responsible for designing and building many stadiums and sports arenas such as the Millennium stadium in Cardiff, all the top stadiums in the United States, the Royal Selangor Racecourse to name a few, after London won the bid for this year’s Olympics.
So, it was an exciting time for Faizal. Having worked on the Dublin 02 Arena and the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics Masterplan, Faizal joined the team working on the design of the overlay.
“After completing Russia’s Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics Masterplan design, my direct involvement with London 2012 began in early 2009 as the Venue Design Cluster Lead of the Olympic Park North Zone. Venues include the Handball arena, Basketball arena, Velodrome & BMX, Hockey Centre and Eton Manor training facility. Having dealt with venues purpose built for the 2012 Olympic Games, I decided to move onto the more challenging existing London venues which are located in the heart of the city, historic and iconic, becoming Cluster Lead of London Off-Park venues, managing a team of architects and designers,” said Faizal during a meeting at the Olympic offices in One Churchill Place in East London.
“Overlay is the temporary design which improves each venue to be capable to accommodate an Olympics event. Due to the intensive nature and complexity of such an event, every venue would need to be temporarily adapted to deliver heightened security measures, greater Media requirements and the topmost hospitality experiences. With sustainability in mind, the volume of temporary overlay for this year equates to the overlay of the previous three Olympic Games put together!,” explained Faizal.
He added that for the event, iconic and historic locations around London such as Greenwich Park, Horse Guards Parade and Hyde Park employ temporary overlays as competition venues, thus showcasing the city of London worldwide.
“With the Olympic stadium itself, during the games, it can accommodate 80,000 people, but right after the games it will shrink to a 30,000 seater, which is more suitable for athletics events.
Sustainability and regeneration were the operative words in the planning.
“In Beijing, they built huge arenas and after the games, they are empty, and became a burden for China to maintain them.
But for London, the simple approach was if it has got a legacy use, we will build it, if not we will build it temporarily,” said the architect who after 19 years in the UK has finally gone back to Malaysia, providing consulting work on a new
Sports-led mixed used development in Kuala Lumpur and exploring how it could possibly hold large one-off events.
This move back was very much in the planning of this meticulous and organised architect.
“I came to the UK for a reason. My father sent me here to study. I was not going back with just a piece of paper. So I had been absorbing all this knowledge and also culturally, dealing with people here. I am a Malaysian, and learning quite a lot. My plan had always been to make my way back to Malaysia. This was always going to be a transition,” he said.
Faizal, who admitted to wanting to do everything and do them well, especially with the best in the field, said he thrived on challenges.
“Working with this firm, the experience and the transfer of knowledge is immense. Their designs are innovative, lightweight and sustainable. A lot of work we do was researching for stuff; using materials not used before.
“I felt very happy and fulfilled working as an architect with Populous, working on buildings which not only look nice, but the effect they have on people.
“The fact is that you are part of the public dream and the impact they have on people’s life experience. That is what I loved working with Populous. I am a sports fan, I play a lot of sports and I love heroes like Schumacher, Maradona and Tiger Woods. I love their skills,” Faizal says enthusiastically.
His working on the stadiums and in the sports arenas where the greats compete, was indeed a dream fulfilled. There’s nothing naïve about that. |
