Dubious municipal award for Dihlabeng
FREE STATE - Municipal officials in the northern Free State are preparing themselves for global glory.
A delegation representing the municipality of Dihlabeng - led by mayor Tjheta Mofokeng - will fly out to Switzerland in June to receive a prize for the best municipality in the world.
The municipality was informed by the self-styled Europe Business Assembly (EBA) that they had been nominated for a prize.
But nominees must pay for this privilege. In other words, they are buying the award of the world's best municipality.
Dihlabeng is paying more than R80,000 for the title and residents in poorer settlements say they do not deserve to win.
The municipality has dismissed the protests.
Ratepayers will cover the cost of the trip that amounts to at least R100,000.
EBA is situated in the UK and offers various awards - among them an International Socrates Award, a Queen Victoria Medal and the Knights of the International Order of Grand Master La Valette.
Past winners come from countries such as Kazahkstan and Moldova.

xnak laaa....kang x pasal2 aku kena hempapan konkrit plak dah laa sakng musim KONKRIT JATUH.....xpun terpaksa menahan bau busuk sampah, or xleh nak makan di restoran sbb 17 premis yg kotor, n xbleh menjalani kehidupan dgn aman sbb ramainya POCIT MOCIT OMPUTIH BOROI TUA NAK MAMPUS YG TUNGGU NAK MATI yg berkeliaran di Batu Feringghi jer........muahahahahahhaha

Some of the winners included:
A bank in Tajikistan was awarded “The Queen Victoria Award – international award for maintaining traditional values of virtue, bravery and integrity”. Incidentally, in 2008 the same Tajik bank got another two awards from EBA – “European Quality” and “The United Europe”
A folk healer from Ukraine, vice chancellor of a South African university, director of a bank in Swaziland, mayor of a Turkish municipality, vice-director of MIG, the Russian fighter aircraft manufacturer…
All this seemed strange and raised a number of questions: What brought all these people together? On what basis were the awards given out and why were their recipients (mostly) fairly obscure organisations with few if any international achievements? Why such pompous titles for the awards? And so on.
Actually the explanation is obvious – most of these prizes were vanity awards which the recipients had paid for themselves. Some of the participants of the Dublin event told me confidentially that they were offered an EBA award in return for £5000
It all works very simple: EBA and its partner organisations send out loads of letters to companies all over the world, but mostly in developing countries, informing them they were nominated for a “prestigious international award”. If a company expresses interest they contact them with a price list.

Ada dalam paper hari ini
Lepas majlis pulau pinang gabung dengan majlis daerah balik pulau, maka status bandarya pulau pinag ditarik balik
