Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has threatened to sue former MCA president Ling Lion Sik is the latter does not retract and apologise for a and alleged defamaotry statement he made about the prime minister recently.
A letter of demand, confirmed by a Ling family source, has been sent to the former fedefal minister.
The legal letter demanded a retraction, an unequivocal apology and compensation following an article in The Malay Mail Online titled 'MCA's Liong Sik joins call for Najib's ouster for allegedly putting people's money in his own pocket' which was published on Oct 3.
In the letter, Najib's lawyer Mohd Hafarizam Harun said Ling has seven days to answer the demands or face legal action for smearing the Prime Minister's reputation.
The letter which was sighted by Malaysiakini read: 'We refer to the above matter wherein we act for our client YAB Dato' Seri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak, the Prime Minister of Malaysia in his personal capacity.
"We have been instructed to take action and demand a retraction, an unequivocal apology and reasonable compensation for the aforementioned defamatory statement concerning our client.'
In the article concerned, Ling reportedly said: 'I agree with Mahathir (that Najib should resign). Because he has taken people's money and put it in his own personal accounts.'
'Politcal donation'
MCA has distanced itself from Ling's statement.
Najib is under fire after RM2.6 billion was found in his personal bank account, amid financial strife faced by state investment firm 1MDB. .
An MACC investigation into the RM2.6 billion is pending, but Najib said it is a political donation.
MACC preliminary findings show the funds originated from a Middle Eastern source.
Najib has repeatedly said that he has never abused public funds. |

We believe should Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik bring this matter to court, then the lawyers suing him must give evidence that indeed public money did not finally enter into PM Najib’s personal accounts.
MACC will have to expedite their investigation on the RM42 million fiasco and their findings must be brought into the trial.
Should the judiciary is brave enough, this can either bring back credibility to the government, or further strengthen Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik’s aforementioned opinion.
But there are many ways to skin a cat. Tun Dr Ling can simply apologise in order not to incur further costs, or the PM’s lawyers can retract the lawsuit in order not to risk a trial, both parties can settle the matter quietly and amicably, or this matter can indeed proceed to the courts.
Regardless, the Tun appears to have the upper hand in this. Because if it was indeed untrue, Najib would have long sued Sarawak Report and the Wall Street Journal.
