Nani: Fergie limits my freedom
Manchester United winger Nani has revealed he is playing within his abilities because manager Sir Alex Ferguson restricts his "freedom" on the pitch.

Portuguese trickster Nani has been, perhaps unfairly, living in the shadow of former United star Cristiano Ronaldo during his time at Old Trafford, but this season he has gone some way to filling his countryman's boots by translating his undoubted ability into goals and assists.

But Nani said he has sacrificed some of his personal joy for the game and put a limit on the amount of tricks he executes on the pitch in the pursuit of increased effectiveness.

"I try to enjoy playing now, but it is not always possible because I have a responsibility to the team," Nani told Spain's Don Balón.

"But something of the street remains in me. It is not easy to show at United because Sir Alex does not allow very much freedom and I cannot do the tricks and things I did with my friends."

Nani presumably refers to the sort of expressive wing play that could humiliate opponents but risks giving the ball away. He hinted that Ferguson is more relaxed about his star winger trying the spectacular against weaker opposition when United have the lion's share of possession.

"When the game is under control I take a risk and it makes me very happy if things work out."

Manchester United have spent a year searching for a long-term replacement to Edwin van der Sar - but there still remains mystery over exactly who Sir Alex Ferguson will sign this summer.

Vander Sar is retiring at the end of the season at the age of 40 andFerguson has admitted that he should have signed the Dutchman farearlier than 2005, when United finally found their successor to PeterSchmeichel.

The Scot insists he will not make the same mistakeagain and has been scouring Europe for someone who can be his firstchoice goalkeeper for the next decade.

Here, Goal.com UK takes a look at the main contenders to become the new No. 1 at Old Trafford...

Name: Manuel Neuer
Age: 24

Club: Schalke 04

Nationality: German

Price: £18 million

TheGermany No.1 has been scouted on a number of occasions by Ferguson andis the preferred option of Eric Steele, United's goalkeeping coach.

Neuer is a brilliant shotstopper who commands his area well and has been improving rapidly in recent seasons.

Theman who models himself on Jens Lehmann has also been strongly linked toGerman giants Bayern Munich and last week delivered a blow to United byrevealing he wants to stay in the Bundesliga.

“I definitely wantto win the Bundesliga once in my career,” he said. “I can go abroadtwice a year, once for a summer holiday and once for a winter holiday, but whether I need to go abroad to play football - some players say youdo, but I see things differently.”

Name: Rene Adler
Age: 26
Club: Bayer Leverkusen
Nationality: German
Price: £19m

Neuer'srival for the German national team certainly would be interested inmoving to the Premier League – and even has a clause in his contractthat would specifically allow him to join United.

A lifelong United fan, Adler's contract at the BayArena allows him to move to Old Trafford if United offer around £19m.

The26-year-old was confirmed as Germany's main 'keeper ahead of lastsummer's World Cup but a rib injury prevented him from travelling toSouth Africa.

Bayer Leverkusen are trying to negotiate anextension to Adler's contract, which expires in 2012, but his chancesof completing his dream move were boosted when Steele watched him inaction earlier this month.

Name: Maarten Stekelenburg
Age: 28

Club: Ajax
Nationality: Dutch
Price: £9m

Consideredby many as the fitting replacement to Van der Sar having alreadyreplaced him in the Netherlands national team and made some crucialsaves as Holland reached the World Cup final last summer.

Stekelenburgis a product of the Ajax youth system and has the international andclub experience to handle the pressure of being No.1 at Old Trafford.

Vander Sar has given Ferguson a glowing recommendation of Stekelenburg, who has a reputation as a solid, reliable and consistent goalkeeper.

The28-year-old is ready to leave Holland this summer and has no interestin signing a new contract at Ajax, which has also sparked interest fromArsenal.

“Stekelenburg is indeed the goalkeeper who is at the top of our wanted list," said United coach René Meulensteen in January.

Name: David De Gea
Age: 20
Club: Atletico Madrid
Nationality: Spanish

Price: £16m

Theathletic Spaniard has been sensational for Atletico Madrid this seasonand is one of the most promising goalkeepers in the world.

Hehas long been at the forefront of Ferguson's thinking, with the Scoteven missing United's League Cup win at Scunthorpe earlier this seasonto watch the youngster in action against Valencia.

The20-year-old is already one of the best 'keepers in Spanish football butfinds himself behind Iker Casillas, Pepe Reina and Victor Valdes in thenational team.

While United are convinced he is a star of thefuture, there are concerns that De Gea's inconsistency this seasonshows he needs more experience before completing a big move.

Name: Pepe Reina
Age: 28

Club: Liverpool

Nationality: Spanish
Price: £22m

Itwould be one of the most controversial moves in years, but it is by nomeans impossible that Reina will swap Liverpool for bitter rivalsManchester United.

One of the best stoppers around, the Spaniardhas grown frustrated at Anfield and was upset by the departure of closefriend Fernando Torres in the January transfer window.

Liverpoolwould certainly force United to pay over the odds to land Reina, whohas been consistently excellent since arriving in 2005. Arsenal arebelieved to be in pole position for his signature but the Spaniard hasrecently offered United hope.

“'Van der Sar will hang up hisgloves in the summer so of course [United] are looking,” Reina saidlast month. “I can’t do anything. I can’t say anything logically as Ihave a contract with Liverpool.”

Name: Hugo Lloris
Age: 24

Club: Lyon

Nationality: French
Price: £20m

The France No.1 has long been linked with a switch to the Premier League due to his wonderful form since joining Lyon in 2008.

The24-year-old's solid technical skills mean he is holder of thegoalkeeper of the year award in Ligue 1 and he is still improving.

Llorisis a superb shot-stopper but there are doubts at Old Trafford about howhe would handle aerial bombardments in the Premier League as he can beshaky when handling crosses.

Lyon are notoriously aggressivenegotiators and the feeling across Europe is that the French club willprice Lloris out of a summer switch, while the player himself is in norush to move.

Name: Igor Akinfeev
Age: 24
Club: CSKA Moscow
Nationality: Russian
Price: £10m

TheRussian 'keeper is still young but has bags of experience having madehis CSKA Moscow debut aged 17 and earned his first international cap asan 18-year-old.

He has already won plenty of trophies, includinga Uefa Cup and two Russian league titles, while he has appearedregularly in the Champions League.

An agile goalkeeper withrazor sharp reactions, Akinfeev has been linked with United for yearsand has been singled out for praise from Ferguson in the past.

The24-year-old is understood to be keen on a switch to Old Trafford butthere is a concern over whether he could transfer his form to thePremier League.

And not to forget....

Name: Anders Lindegaard
Age: 26

Club: Manchester United

Nationality: Danish

Price: £3.5m (already signed)

Signedfor United in November from Aalesund in a £3.5m deal and trained withthe club before becoming eligible to play in January.

The Dane arrived as a back-up goalkeeper and has made two appearances for the club so far this year.

Lindegaard, 26, is currently recovering from a knee injury and is widely expected to be Ferguson's No.2 goalkeeper next season.

Hissuitability for the role as first choice at Old Trafford has beenquestioned by United legend Peter Schmeichel, who believes hiscompatriot is not ready for the rigours of the Premier League.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson excited by return of ‘fantastic’ Antonio Valencia    Scothas been impressed with the Ecuadorian winger since his return andbelieves that his ability to spot a pass will be a big difference inthe closing weeks of the season

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed the impact that Ecuadorian winger Antonio Valencia has had on his side since returning to the first team in their Champions League quarter-final against Marseilles.

The winger had been out since September after suffering a horrific leg break in the Champions League against Rangers.
He had an immediate impact to the team assisting United’s secondgoal of their 2-1 win and Ferguson believes the wide man’s guile willpivotal come the end of the season.

"Antonio has showed in the parts of the games he's played so far why we've missed him," Ferguson told Inside United.
"He is a fantastic footballer. He came on at the right time againstMarseille because Nani was starting to wilt a bit after his injury.
"His ability to get to the dead ball line is a big advantage to usand his football brain was there for all to see when he made JavierHernandez's second goal against Marseille. His pass to Ryan Giggs wasfantastic.

It had been feared that Valencia would be out for the season alongwith Nani who suffered an injury at the hands of Jamie Carragher’sshocking tackle against Liverpool but both have returned to boost theteam as they search for another treble.
He added: "It is a big plus point. Having both Antonio and Nani is a big boost for us."
