Six Flying Dragons - Ep. 39~40
The historical background to help understand Ep. 39~40

However, Yi Seong-Gye and Jung Do-Jeon had the same dream as Choi Young after all. Moreover, Yi Seong-Gye had an experience to conquer Liadong castle in 1370. At that time he had to retreat because the provisions had run out. Unlike Choi Young’s reckless expedition, Yi Seong-Gye and Jung Do-Jeon made more elaborate long-term preparations for their own Liadong expedition.
They also set up a plan to populate the land with Jurchens who would be naturalized as Joseon citizens. Do you remember Sambong promised the Jurchen chief to give lands in Shenyang (심양, 瀋陽)? (ep. 39) Shenyang is in the Northern part of the Liaodong peninsula, not the current land of Joseon. Some Goryeo kings had ruled over the region as Yuan Emperor’s son-in-law during the Mongol Empire period. In the drama, Sambong promised to give Shenyang in return for Jurchens’ cooperation if Joseon can succeed in the Liaodong expedition. Of course, Sambong’s red envelope in ep. 39~40 is a fiction.
In the end, Sambong’s expedition plan couldn’t be carried out because of Yi Bang-Won’s coup. The First strife of Princes (1398) was political conflicts over whether they should carry out the Liaodong expedition or not. That’s why some nationalist historians extremely hate Yi Bang-Won who made it impossible for good. (LOL)

Six Flying Dragons - Ep. 39~40
The historical background to help understand Ep. 39~40

■ Banchon village 반촌 泮村
In ep. 40, Sambong promised to give Boon-Yi an empty village, not farm lands, where her people could live together. It was none other than Banchon (반촌 泮村), the village of slaves working for Sungkyunkwan.
Sungkyunkwan (성균관 成均館) was the highest educational institution during Goryeo and Joseon period. Sambong, Poeun, and Min Je (Bang-Won’s father-in-law) used to be a professor of Sungkyunkwan. Bang-Won was also a student there. (ep. 3)
Banchon (반촌 泮村) was a unique village to provide various resources for Sungkyunkwan like books, food, equipments, and lodgings. It was the only place where butchery was allowed in the capital. No outsiders could move into the village. It was also an area of extraterritorial jurisdiction. Therefore, no government forces could enter into the Banchon village, even if a criminal fled into it. Banchon was also a debating place for Sungkyunkwan scholars who wanted to study non-Confucian texts. I recommend to watch Korean dramaTree with Deep Roots (2011, SBS) to understand its atmosphere.
This Banchon in SFD is located in Gaegyung, and that Banchon in TWDR is in Hanyang (Seoul). However, when the capital city was moved from Gaegyung to Seoul in 1395, the entire Banchon villagers also moved to Seoul. So, they are the same village after all. Sambong guaranteed that their social status would remain as commoners, but I’m sure it will be changed in the future.

■ Boon-Yi‘s future in TWDR?
Some may say Boon-Yi will become Ms. Dodam (도담댁), the female leader of Banchon in Tree with Deep Roots, but Nope. It’ll never happen, because…
  • Ms. Dodam in TWDR speaks with strong North Korean accent. Boon-Yi’s hometown is South western province, and she never speaks in dialect.

  • When Moo-Hyul in TWDR entrusted little Chae-Yoon to Ms. Dodam, he was talking down to her and even scolded “Throw away any unnecessary interest!” Then she politely bowed down to him and said “Forgive me, sir.” (TWDR ep. 2) Moo-Hyul in SFD is speaking to Boon-Yi extremely politely with honorific title like Nangja (Lady).
  • When Ms. Dodam heard Yi Bang-Ji fell off a cliff, she was terrified and said “What shall we do, if he is still alive and came back to avenge us?” (TWDR ep. 18) If she is Boon-Yi, how can she say such a thing about her brother?
Therefore, Ms. Dodam CAN NOT be Boon-Yi. Then what happened to Boon-Yi?

Tree with Deep Roots Episode 2
Ms. Dodam : It’s been 20 years since Joseon was established. Although many people were killed, our Banchon survived. Don’t you know how we survived? Year of Mooin (1398), the night the former king (Yi Bang-Won) murdered Sambong (Jung Do-Jeon), two servants from Banchon were involved. One servant reported to the former king that Sambong was at the cottage of Lord Nam Eun. The other servant reported to Sambong that the former king (Yi Bang-Won) raised the army. What happened to them? Because of the issue, our Banchon could have been slaughtered in whole. We only survived by giving the corpses of those two servants! Ever since, our Banchon has not been involved in any political issues. Although we hear things, see things, and know things, we must not remember them. However, how dare you try to scheme usingSambong’s book?
Servant : But Lord Sambong was killed unfairly!
Ms. Dodam : Shut up! We Banchon do not judge what is right or wrong! Kill yourself!

And then, she burnt the Sambong’s book titled Bulssi Japbyeon (불씨잡변 佛氏雜辨 ‘Buddha’s Nonsense’ ) written in 1398, a few months before Sambong was killed by Yi Bang-Won.
Korean Netizens are speculating that one of those 2 servants (slaves) must be Boon-Yi. It remains to be seen whether it is true or not.

Bang-Won in the next episode?
Q. How did Bang Won bounce back after Sambong has arrested him and ‘cut off his arms and legs’? Is there any historical record on that episode and what is going to come next. Thanks!
It is a fiction. Prince Jeongan (Bang-Won) had never been arrested in the history. He tried to live as quietly as possible during the 7 years. Hunting or reading was his pastime.
What will happen to Bang-Won in the next episode? Well, he will be sent to Ming China as a hostage, and will meet Ming Prince Zhu Di (주체 朱棣), also known as Prince of Yan (연왕 燕王) / Yongle Emperor (영락제 永樂帝).

How do I know that? Because the actor playing the Ming prince was added to the cast a few days ago. The actor’s name is Moon Jong-Won (문종원).

My 2 cents on SFD ep. 39~40
I’ve never seen a happy ending from these writers except for Jewel in the Palace. (Sigh) SFD will go on the same route.

I think Yi Sin-Jeok is a double spy sent by Sambong. I don’t trust his criticism about Sambong at all. He will become a Milbon member, after all.

I don’t think Sambong is a villain in ep. 40. Bang-Won also killed innocent 13 scholars last week to get rid of potential threats. An eye for an eye. Sambong just did the same thing to get rid of potential threat (Bang-Won) by using Bang-Won’s method.  : “The End justifies the means.”  "Persuasion is useless. Don’t waste your time and effort. Get rid of your enemy as soon as possible.“ Like teacher, like student.

"How come Sambong and the king did such an ungrateful thing to Bang-Won! He helped you a lot!” ….. Well, Yi Bang-Won is going to do the exactly same thing to his wife Lady Min. She did everything to make him a king, but he killed her 4 brothers and accepted 17 concubines after he became a king.  I pity her. She gives me a good lesson. “Don’t risk everything for a man, even if he is your husband. Risk everything for yourself.”

Boon-Yi cried for the little boy Seon-Dol. However, does the Hwasadan spy girl killed by Young-Gyu have anyone to cry for her? At least, she can be with her baby in the heaven. In Ep 8, She told General Yi Seong-Gye with teary eyes to use her as his spearhead, saying “My baby died and went cold in my arms. I can’t forgive them (Goryeo’s corrupt nobles). “

As the Korean proverb said “Two whales’ fight makes a shrimp’s back broken."  When two giant politicians clash, innocent common people can get caught in the crossfire. “Is there any difference between killing it with a sword and with politics? You can’t find where windflowers have fallen anyway.”(Muiiya Lyrics)
