L鰓 to Blood German Youngsters Much to Denmark's Chagrin
Germany's coach Joachim L鰓 will ring the changes for Wednesday night's friendly against Denmark by announcing an inexperienced 16-man squad aimed at blooding some of his rising stars. Having opened up a three-point gap at the top of their Euro 2008 qualifying group after a 2-1 win over the Czech Republic in Prague on Saturday, L鰓 will rest his first-choice side for Wednesday's game in Duisburg.
Schalke 04 striker Kevin Kuranyi, whose headed goals either side of half-time gave Germany the valuable win in Prague, is the most experienced player in the squad with 37 caps.
Alongside captain and Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack, the Bayern Munich trio of Philipp Lahm, Lukas Podolski and Bastian Schweinsteiger, as well as Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann are amongst the group who have been sent home.
Werder Bremen players Torsten Frings and Per Mertesacker and Bayer Leverkusen's Bernd Schneider will also miss the game.
"It's all about giving other players their opportunity," L鰓 said. "Saturday's game was an important and hard fought win for us. The team played well as a unit and put together some intelligent phases of play, but we need to look at other options with a view to the future."
Back-in-favor Kuranyi leads the line
Bildunterschrift: Gro遖nsicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift: Kuranyi will be Germany's most experienced player
Having only come back into the national side in last month's 3-1 win over Switzerland, 25-year-old Kuranyi is staking a strong case for his place in the first-choice side and is hoping to build on a superb performance.
"Kuranyi has proved that he is in a good vein of form and is scoring some good goals," L鰓 said. "It's nice to have some options up front."
Kuranyi is likely to partner Bayer Leverkusen forward Paul Freier in attack against the Danes, while the squad's goalkeepers, uncapped Robert Enke and reserve Timo Hildebrand, get their chance to stake a claim.
Pacy midfielder Clemens Fritz from Werder Bremen will start alongside Bremen left-back Christian Schulz and defender VfL Wolfsburg's Alexander Madlung, who is set to add to his single cap he won last autumn in the 2-0 win over Georgia. Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Simon Rolfes will also get his chance.
Jogi looks to the future in Euro break
Bildunterschrift: Gro遖nsicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift: With a break in qualifiers, Jogi can experiment
The friendly is a sensible time for L鰓, who has an impressive record as coach of seven wins and a draw having succeeded J黵gen Klinsmann last year, to look to the future.
With no more Euro 2008 qualifying fixtures until the visit of minnows San Marino in June, Denmark, who lost 2-1 to Spain in Madrid at the weekend, will provide a good work out for his inexperienced side.
However, Morten Olsen, the opposing coach, is less than happy about facing a deliberately under-strength Germany team in Duisburg.
Danes not amused
"This is very disrespectful," Olsen was quoted as saying by German media on Tuesday. "We had a clear agreement to field our strongest teams.
Bildunterschrift: Gro遖nsicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift: Morten Olsen's Denmark are having a torrid campaign
"I wasn't told about it by the DFB (German Soccer Association). I read about it in the newspapers and you don't do that."
The 57-year-old also fears that a game against a weakened Germany will hamper his preparations for their Euro 2008 qualifier against Sweden in June.
But 25-year-old Rolfes was adamant Germany will be no push-overs at Duisburg's MSV-Arena and Olsen's worries will be proved wrong.
"The Danes do not need to underestimate us," he said. "This is a huge challenge for us, we want to prove we are good enough for the national side." |

Denmark beat Germany 1-0
Birmingham City striker Nicklas Bendtner scored a goal less than 10 minutes from time as Denmark poached a 1-0 win over Germany in Wednesday night's friendly in Duisburg. Bendtner swept home a cross in the 81st minute as German coach Joachim Loew suffered his first defeat in nine games since succeeding Jurgen Klinsmann as Germany coach after last year's World Cup.
Loew's brave decision to blood six new caps - including Hanover"s goalkeeper Robert Enke, Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Simon Rolfes and VfB Stuttgart's Roberto Hilbert in the starting eleven - backfired. And with only three survivors from the 2-1 Euro 2008 qualifying win over the Czech Republic on Saturday, the experienced Denmark side finished stronger than their opponents and deserved the win.
With Thomas Hitzlsperger and Schalke 04 striker Kevin Kuranyi the only experienced campaigners in the side, Germany lacked the tactical control and sharp finishing that had seen them win in Prague. Having scored both goals in Prague, Kuranyi had several half chances to add to his 17 international strikes but his finishing was wide of the mark.
Denmark threatened when Jesper Groenkjaer clipped the bar with a bullet header after 70 minutes, just as Bayer Leverkusen defender Gonzalo Castro came on for his first cap. The winning goal came in the 81st minute when Birmingham City striker Nicklas Bendtner swept Groenkjaer"s short pass from the right past Enke.
Cologne striker Patrick Helmes, who came on for his first cap to replace Schaludraff after 78 minutes, was denied two late chances to score, but it was not enough to stop the Danes. |

German roundupBayern keeps title hopes alive with win over SchalkePosted: Saturday March 31, 2007 4:01PM; Updated: Saturday March 31, 2007 4:01PM
BERLIN (AP) -- Roy Makaay and Hasan Salihamidzic scored Saturday to keep Bayern Munich's Bundesliga hopes alive with a 2-0 win against leader Schalke.
Schalke leads with 53 points, two ahead of Werder Bremen with 51 and VfB Stuttgart with 49. Bayern is fourth with 47 -- only six points behind Schalke -- and with a good chance of gaining one of the league's three Champions League berths.
A loss would have ended Bayern's hopes, leaving the team 12 behind Schalke with seven rounds to play.
Makaay scored his 100th Bundesliga goal in the third minute in front of 69,000 at Bayern Allianz Arena . After two quick Bayern passes, he finished with a sidefoot shot over Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
The goal stunned Schalke, which had just three off-target attempts for the rest of a sluggish first half. Although the visitors picked up the pace after the interval, it still didn't manage a dangerous attempt on goal.
"We just didn't have the will and courage today," Schalke midfielder Fabian Ernst said. "We didn't have the heart, especially, to attack."
In the 79th, Lucio found an unmarked Salihamidzic in the area and the Bosnian chipped under the bar for 2-0.
Schalke retained its lead because Bremen drew 0-0 against Energie Cottbus, but the performance will increase speculation Schalke is about to surrender its league lead late in the season for the third time in six years.
Bayern turned in another disciplined performance under coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, who took over the defending champions two months ago.
"We know what to do when we have the ball. We know what to do when we don't have the ball," Bayern midfielder Mark van Bommel said. "It's that simple."
Bremen wasted a chance to take first place on goal difference with its scoreless draw against Cottbus, while a depleted Stuttgart beat Alemannia Aachen 3-1.
Bremen controlled the entire match in Cottbus and attacked relentlessly but wasted chances. In the 17th, Germany forward Miroslav Klose had possession in front of the net, with Cottbus goalkeeper Tomislav Piplica sprawled on his back. Klose hesitated and then passed to Aaron Hunt for an offside goal.
"Cottbus didn't do anything, I don't know why their fans are celebrating," Bremen midfielder Torsten Frings said. "But of course the result wasn't enough for us."
Stuttgart stayed in the title race with goals from Marco Streller in the 29th, Benjamin Lauth in the 75th and Cacau in the 84th. Moses Sichone scored for Alemannia in the 59th.
The league's hottest team, Bayer Leverkusen, ran its streak to four wins and a draw with a 3-1 victory against Mainz 05. Sergei Barbarez scored twice, while Bernd Schneider added the third for the fifth-placed side. Mohamed Zidan scored for Mainz in the 75th.
Also Saturday, FC Nuremberg beat Hertha Berlin 2-1 while Borussia Moenchengladbach and Eintracht Frankfurt drew 1-1.
On Friday, Arminia Bielefeld edged Borussia Dortmund 1-0. |

HITZFELD CALLS FOR BAYERN FOCUS

Click here for more Champions League news Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has told his players that concentration could be key to their chances of progressing through to the last four of the Champions League.
Bayern visit AC Milan on Tuesday night in the first leg of their quarter-final clash and even though Hitzfeld admits the Serie A side have the better individuals he insists a focused team effort could still be enough for his men.
He said: "Football is a team game and if we can be compact, and keep our concentration for the full 90 minutes, then we can come away with a good result."
Hitzfeld regards a good result as one which keeps the tie alive for the second leg in Munich.
"I feel this tie will be decided by just one goal," added the Bayern coach, who rates the chances of that "falling tomorrow or in the home leg" as even.
"We have just as good a chance of winning here as we do at home."
Last season, Bayern were dumped out of the competition at the first knockout round stage by a Milan side which won the second leg at the San Siro 4-1 following a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena.
"Last year we showed two different faces - one at home and one in Milan - and I hope it is the one from Munich which we see tomorrow," said Hitzfeld.
The memories of last year are obviously still fresh, but Bayern have since been to Milan and won against runaway Serie A leaders Internazionale.
That, and not the 4-1 debacle, nor Bayern's Champions League final win at the San Siro against Valencia in 2001, is at the forefront of the Bavarians' thoughts.
"Winning here against Inter was a positive experience, but we cannot stay in the past - tomorrow we play Milan and we are concentrating on that," said midfielder Hasan Salihamidzic.
The Bosnian has already agreed to join Juventus next season, but he insists he has no added incentive to perform in front of an Italian audience.
He added: "It is obviously special for me as I will be here next year, but tomorrow night is about Bayern and we want to play a good game.
"I want to get into the semi-final with Bayern Munich."
The visitors will be without regular goalkeeper Oliver Kahn and midfielder Mark van Bommel for the clash.
Having overcome a dead leg, Owen Hargreaves will take on the responsibility of bossing the midfield, while 21-year-old Michael Rensing will start in goal.
It is not the first time Rensing has played in such a crucial game, though, since his Champions League debut for Bayern came in almost identical circumstances.
He replaced the injured Kahn against Milan at home last year, and saved a penalty from Andriy Shevchenko in the 1-1 draw.
"I think it is an advantage that he has already played against AC Milan," commented Hitzfeld.
"Rensing has already showed that he is excellent and we have no worries about him."
Striker Roy Makaay believes Hargreaves can easily slot into Van Bommel's shoes, saying: "We have players who can always step into different positions and, although I don't know if Owen will be taking Mark's place, I am sure he would do an excellent job." |
