Bayern Munich defender Willy Sagnol will be sidelined for around four months after damaging knee ligaments during Tuesday's 2-2 Champions League quarter-final draw with AC Milan.
The veteran French full-back was expected to miss the rest of the campaign after picking up a knee problem in the second half of the San Siro meeting in midweek.
But scans have revealed additional cartilage damage to the joint leaving Sagnol fighting to make it back in time for pre-season training.
Immediately after the match he had said: "The doctors told me that the injury seems to be the outer meniscus.
"That means six to seven weeks out, so the season would be over for me. But that's football. Worse things happen."
