Bayern Munich v AC Milan
Milan face an uphill battle at the Allianz Arena after conceding two away-goals in the first-leg against Bayern Munich. "Munich are stronger at home and they will have the advantage of their fans," said manager Carlo Ancelotti. "It would have been better if it had been the other way around and we were at home in the second leg." The Bavarian's inspirational captain Oliver Kahn, who is making his 103rd Champions League appearance, has warned the Italians that home-ground advantage will provide a 12th man to the team on the night. "Milan are world class and we know they are also strong away from home." "We have always been strong in the Bundesliga and Champions League at the Allianz Arena," said Kahn. Mark van Bommel and Oliver Kahn both return from suspension and manager Ottmar Hitzfeld is delighted to have two leaders back on the field. "Without van Bommel, and with a bit of luck maybe, we were able to draw 2-2 in Milan," he said. "But to have him back, we are stronger and he has a great presence." However, the Bundesliga champions have several injury worries. Willy Sagnol is out for the rest of the season after damaging his knee in the first leg while Hitzfeld is also sweating over the fitness of no fewer than three other regulars. Owen Hargreaves, Lucio and Hasan Salihamidzic are all struggling and their availability will only be decided after the final training session on Tuesday afternoon. Bastian Schweinsteiger will have to wait even longer before knowing if he will be fit to face the Rossoneri. "Schweinsteiger is very doubtful," revealed Hitzfeld on Tuesday. "He needed acupuncture yesterday evening and we will have to wait until tomorrow afternoon before taking a decision." Since being docked eight points at the start of the Serie A season, Milan have made no secret of their intention to win the Champions League. They are only fifth in the league at present and, having put all their eggs in one basket, Ancelotti's side must now deliver in Europe or the coach could find his position in danger. None of this is worrying the players, however, according to defender Paolo Maldini. "There are times to have a laugh and times when you have got to be serious, and I can say we have a good, serene dressing room," revealed the 38-year-old. Striker Filippo Inzaghi is expected to return, although he is not fully fit, and Alberto Gilardino is suspended and Ronaldo cup-tied. The Rossoneri thus find themselves impoverished for options upfront. Verdict The attacking burden for the Italian giants lies almost solely with Kaka - who is joint top-scorer in the competition with seven goals. In Hargreaves and van Bommel, the German club have two excellent midfielders who have the nous to keep the Brazilian superstar quiet. Milan deserved it, admits Hitzfeld
FC Bayern M黱chen coach Ottmar Hitzfeld admitted his side were second best after AC Milan's 2-0 second-leg victory in Germany took the Italian team through to the semi-finals on a 4-2 aggregate scoreline - a result that left Carlo Ancelotti full of praise for his players.

Milan were the better team, but there was no real difference in quality between the two sides. In the first 15 minutes the match was balanced, but then my team suddenly lost their heads. We gave the ball away too easily for the first goal. [Clarence] Seedorf is an extraordinary player but he shouldn't have been allowed to get into a shooting position with as much space as he had. As for the second goal we shouldn't have allowed [Filippo] Inzaghi to get into that position - these mistakes proved costly. In the second half we found a way back into the game and had a few chances. We were in good shape, perfectly prepared and had big plans for this match, but I have to admit that we don't have the class of Milan. When they let the ball flow between their players, it is technical perfection. They play very intelligently and capitalise on every little mistake. They are one of the greatest teams in the world.

I think this was a great performance by my team. It was not easy to wrest back the initiative in the tie after the first leg, and we didn't expect to score so easily in the first half, but now we have the opportunity to continue representing Italian football in the competition. You need experience as well as technical ability to do well in the UEFA Champions League and we are very experienced. We couldn't take it for granted that we would reach the quarter-finals, but we're still here and I'm happy about that. Manchester United [FC] will be a great test for us but we want to reach the final in Athens and show what we are capable of. |
