Schalke face test of nerve in Friday night derby
BERLIN, April 26 (Reuters) - Schalke 04 have two nasty looking local derbies to negotiate, starting with Friday's game away to VfL Bochum, before they can start thinking of a first Bundesliga title.
Schalke hold a two-point lead over Werder Bremen with four games left to play, while VfB Stuttgart are lurking dangerously, another two points back in third.
All three teams have hit excellent form at just the right time to leave Bayern Munich, champions for the past two years, trailing in fourth place, with little hope even of a Champions League spot for next term.
Schalke, who last won the German championship in the pre-Bundesliga days of 1958, look worthy favourites this time - provided they can hold their nerve against Bochum, and then away to another of their neighbours Borussia Dortmund on May 12. |

Season over for Bayern striker Podolski
BERLIN, April 26 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich striker Lukas Podolski will not play again this season after suffering a knee injury that will require surgery, the club said on Thursday.
Podolski will need between two and three months to recover from the cartilage injury, according to Bayern.
It means he will miss the club's last four league matches this season, as well as Germany's European Championship qualifiers against San Marino and Slovakia in early June.
Podolski was named best young player at the World Cup last year but his first season at Bayern has been hugely disappointing, with just four Bundesliga goals to his name.
Bayern are struggling in fourth place in the Bundesliga, with only a slim chance of getting a Champions League slot for next term.
Bayern also said they would be without French centre-back Valerien Ismael for the rest of the season but gave no details on his injury. Ismael only recently returned from a broken leg suffered in August last year.

Planning for the future
However, the seasoned coach believes the demoralising situation couldprove a huge opportunity for Germany's most successful club."Sometimes, you need a hard landing before you really understand wherethe problem lies and where you have to improve. It's actually a muchbetter place to start if you're about to rebuild." A week and a halfafter a sobering 2-0 defeat against AC Milan, the coach felt even thatresult had a positive side: "Making the Champions League semi-finalsmight have papered over some of the cracks."
The end of the season will herald a detailed analysis of the currentplaying staff. "We'll look at each individual player, assessing hisperformance and desire. That makes the next four weeks enormouslyimportant for every player and for me." Hitzfeld and the board ofdirectors are already planning for the future. "Obviously, we don'twait until the end of May before thinking about next season. We have tobe prepared for anything, make sure we have alternatives, and thinkhard about the way ahead."
Hitfeld inspired by rebuilding
Mehmet Scholl (retirement) and Hasan Salihamidzic (Juventus, freetransfer) are definitely leaving the club, while Jan Schlaudraff, HamitAltintop and Jose Ernesto Sosa have already signed contracts for thenew season. Those changes represent only the start of a major overhaul, likely to continue for the next weeks and months.
Hitzfeld will share the fans' excitement during that period, as thecoach is determined to lead the club back to the top. "I'm inspired bythe prospect of rebuilding with some new players," he declared, insisting the exercise would be a success: "Bayern has been Germany'smost successful club in the past, and will certainly remain the mostsuccessful over the coming years."
