Bundesliga - Mattheus dreams of Bayern
Eurosport - Mon, 16 Jul 14:28:00 2007
Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaeus would love to coach the club as assistant to Ottmar Hitzfeld, he declared.
The most capped Germany player is available for a role at Bayern following his sacking by Red Bull Salzburg after falling out with sporting director Giovanni Trapattoni and would love to work at the club he captained.
"I have a good relationship with [Hittzfeld], we are on the same wavelength and have a similar football philosophy," the 46-year-old told AZ. "It could become a very successful partnership.
"Ottmar and I? That would be ideal. But I'm going on holiday now and will then see what happens. Bayern would be a dream."
Despite helping Red Bull Salzburg to the Austrian Bundesliga title in his first season at the helm, Matthaeus - a confrontational character throughout his career - was fired by the club board on account of a fractious relationship with Trapattoni.
"It was very difficult," former Hungary coach Matthaeus continued.
"I had other ideas; we did not agree on things."
The former Germany captain may find it difficult to work at Bayern too, as he had repeated fall-outs with the club during his time as a player and in particular his decision to sue the club after he left in . But he feels this is all in the past and claims that any disputes with their management team have been resolved.
"That is all in the past," he said.
"These battles have long been put to bed. Everything is fine now, the slate is clean.
"I have an excellent relationship with Franz Beckenbauer and I also speak regularly with Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rumenigge."

Bundesliga - Kahn to retire at end of season
Eurosport - Fri, 13 Jul 12:02:00 2007
Bayern Munich captain Oliver Kahn has revealed he will hang up his boots at the end of the season.
The veteran goalkeeper has admitted that age will have caught up with him by the end of the forthcoming campaign, and will then head to Asia, where he won the Golden Ball at the 2002 World Cup in South Korean and Japan.
"I'm 39 next year. It will then be time to put the shorts away. After that, I have one or two things planned in Asia. They're a little behind in terms of the level of goalkeeping over there. It will be interesting to help them develop in that area."
"I have visited these countries a number of times, I was in China, Japan and Korea, and made a lot of friends there. I very much like the mentality of the people there. I'm looking forward to my time there, and the work will certainly keep me busy for a couple of years."
As regards his final season with Bayern, Kahn said the club's heavy spending in the transfer market, which saw them land stars such as Franck Ribery, Luca Toni and Miroslav Klose, gives him huge grounds for optimism.
"It's only fun at Bayern when you're top of the league. That's why I believe that we'll have a lot of fun and I'll be in a good mood.
"[The team] will have the opportunity to challenge on all fronts and win all possible titles. That's my goal, my desire. When you've been playing for 13, 14 years, you don't want to end your career on a season like the last one."
good news to us munchen fans, but i still think he should retire by the end of previous season |

Toni suffers knee knock
Mon 16 Jul, 09:45 PM
Bayern Munich new recruit Luca Toni has been ruled out for at least two matches after picking up a knee injury. The striker, a seven million euro signing from Fiorentina at the end of last season, was expected to lead Munich's new-look frontline alongside Miroslav Klose in the League Cup clash with Werder Bremen on Saturday and German Cup showdown against Wacker Burghausen seven days later.
But, after routine tests revealed a torn muscle in his fibula, the 30-year-old has been ordered to rest for 10 days.
It leaves Bayern, who have spent 70 million euros on new signings this summer, looking threadbare in attack as Jan Schlaudraff and Lukas Podolski are both injured and Roque Santa Cruz is still on holiday after the Copa America. |

Liverpool 3-2 Werder Bremen
Andriy Voronin scored twice as Liverpool beat Werder Bremen 3-2 in Switzerland this evening. John Arne Riise also got on the score sheet with new signings Yossi Benayoun, Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel making their Reds debuts as second half substitutes.
Rafael Benitez fielded a strong side but Voronin was the only new signing to start the game. Scott Carson begun in goal while the likes of Steven Gerrard, Jermaine Pennant, Steve Finnan, Sami Hyypia and Peter Crouch were also handed starting berths.
Voronin opened the scoring after just four minutes with his first goal for the club following his free-transfer from Bayer Levekusen.
The Ukrainian international pounced on a loose pass at the back and rounded the goalkeeper before sliding the ball home.
Bremen levelled soon after. A powerful close range strike rattled the crossbar but it fell kindly for Schindler, who nodded into an empty net.
Liverpool regained their lead on 14 minutes when Riise let fly with a thunderbolt of a free-kick from 25-yards that the goalkeeper could only palm into his net.
Voronin capped an impressive performance with a second goal in the second half when Xabi Alonso's quick free-kick sent him through on goal.
Benayoun then Torres and later Babel were introduced into the action. Torres went close twice but Bremen pulled a late goal back when Hugo Almeida tapped in from close range.

Bayern without top names for League Cup match v Werder
BERLIN, July 20 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich will be without injured top new foreign signings when they face Werder Bremen in Duesseldorf on Saturday in the opening match of the pre-season League Cup tournament.
Bayern, who made sweeping changes after finishing a disappointing fourth in the league last season, will be missing Italy's Luca Toni and France's Franck Ribery.
The six-team tournament, with 5.2 million euros ($7.18 million) prize money, comprises last season's Bundesliga top four, German Cup winners Nuremberg and second division champions Karlsruhe. It ends with the final in Leipzig on July 28.
Werder beat Bayern 2-0 in last year's League Cup final, a low-key tournament that has struggled to establish itself. Saturday's winners face league champions VfB Stuttgart in Wednesday's semi-finals.
"We're not going to use any players with even slight injuries," Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said. "We want to win but it's not like this is the World Cup."
In Saturday's other match in the sold-out 51,300-seat Duesseldorf arena, Schalke 04 play Karlsruhe, with the winners taking on Nuremberg in Tuesday's semi-finals |
