However, no one was injured in the thunderstorm.

Housewife Kuan Cheng Hua, 42, said she felt winds blowing through the windows of her home in Jalan Che Ngah Tambah, Pokok Assam, at 4pm.

揟hen came the rain and minutes later, a gust of wind hit my house and blew off the zinc roof.

Surprise on hill resort
SHARON NG KOOI KIN

NATURE ... that is the main attraction of Bukit Larut, the oldest and most natural of all the hill resorts in Peninsular Malaysia

Unspoilt Bukit Larut is just the place for having quality family time. SHARON NG KOOI KIN is adamant, like other Taiping-born folk, that the country's oldest hill resort be left in its present state for generations to come.

IF you ask the kids what was most memorable about their stay on Bukit Larut, they will chorus 揟he snake!

Utusan Online     Kerajaan Perak bertemu rakyat setiap Selasa

TAPAH 18 April - Kerajaan Perak akan mengadakan Program Hari Bertemu Pelanggan dengan semua Ahli Majlis Mesyuarat Negeri Perak (Exco) pada setiap Selasa dari pukul 8 pagi hingga 5 petang di Bangunan Perak Darul Ridzuan di Ipoh.

Menteri Besar Perak. Ir.

The Star Online      Sultan Azlan Shah turns 80

By CLARA CHOOI

SULTAN of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah celebrates his 80th birthday today amidst a political backdrop that is vastly different from that of the previous years.

For the first time in the history of Perak, the state抯 administration is now in the hands of the Opposition.

Three other states - Selangor, Penang and Kedah - too fell to the Opposition in the March 8 general election while Kelantan remained with the Opposition.

Sultan Azlan Shah, through his heir, the Regent of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, consented to the formation of a new government in Perak, just two days after the elections.

Sultan Azlah Shah (centre) and Tuanku Bainun (second right) being accompanied by Perak Mentri Besar Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin upon their arrival at Persatuan Guru Kalgidhar Diwan Malaysia's charity dinner event at Syuen Hotel in Ipoh on April 5.

When the silver-haired ruler speaks as an octogenarian during his investiture ceremony in Kuala Kangsar today, his subjects will be listening with utmost respect and admiration.

Perakians of differing political ideologies will abandon their dissimilarities to cheer for a ruler whom they hold in high regard.

Politics aside, Sultan Azlan Shah抯 birthday ceremony this year is different following the birth of a grandson.

On March 14, the 52-year-old Raja Dr Nazrin Shah and his wife Tuanku Zara Salim, 35, were blessed with a beautiful baby boy, delivered at 10am at the Damansara Specialist Hospital in Petaling Jaya.

To those who have followed Sultan Azlan Shah抯 colourful life, they would know that the ruler has always protected the sanctity of the Constitution and ensured social and economic justice.

Ever the moral crusader, Sultan Azlan Shah has gone from function to function across the country, stressing fairness and equality and the importance of adhering to the fundamentals of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

His biography is nothing less than impressive to say the least for Sultan Azlan Shah has always been a man of great intelligence and substance, a trait that Raja Dr Nazrin Shah has obviously inherited.

Born in the former mining town of Batu Gajah, Perak, on April 19, 1928, Sultan Azlan Shah received his early education at the Government English School there, which is today known as SM Sultan Yussuf.

According to the Ruler抯 official website, he continued his higher education at the prestigious Malay College in Kuala Kangsar and subsequently went on to read law at the University of Nottingham.

He was conferred the Bachelor of Laws degree in 1953 and was later admitted to the English Bar by the Honourable Society of Lincoln抯 Inn on Nov 23, 1954.

When he returned from the United Kingdom, Sultan Azlan Shah first served as the Assistant State Secretary of Perak.

In his later years, he joined the Judicial and Legal Service of the Federation of Malaya where he served as a First Class Magistrate and President of the Sessions Court respectively.

He was later appointed Federal Counsel and Deputy Public Prosecutor, Legal Adviser of the State of Pahang and Johor, Registrar of the High Court of Malay and Chief Registrar of the Federal Court of Malaysia.

Most impressively in 1965, a 37-year-old Sultan Azlan Shah was elevated to the Bench of the High Court of Malaya and became the youngest judge to be appointed in the Commonwealth.

He became a Federal Court Judge in 1973, the Chief Justice of the High Court of Malaya in 1979 and then the Lord President (now Chief Justice) of the Federal Court of Malaysia in 1982.

Sultan Azlan Shah was appointed Raja Muda of Perak on July 1, 1983, and ascended the Perak throne on Feb 3, 1984, as the 34th Sultan of Perak. He was officially installed on Dec 9, 1985.

He was the ninth Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia from April 26, 1989, to April 25, 1994, and is married to Raja Permaisuri Tuanku Bainun Mohd Ali. The couple is blessed with five children.

Fireworks set off in celebration of the 80th Birthday of Sultan Azlan Shah.

THOUSANDS of flickering pancut (oil lamps) lit up the pitch darkness along the banks of Perak River in Kuala Kangsar.

The lamps had been meticulously arranged into shapes and words on bamboo structures to offer reverence to the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah, in conjunction with his 80th birthday.

The three-storey high bamboo structures holding up the lamps may look unimpressive during the day but the effect was stunning when the lamps were lighted up at nightfall.

Stretching 1km long, the lights formed the outlines of majestic palaces, a royal barge, the keris, mosques, towers and even a birthday cake with the words 慏aulat Tuanku

NST Online     Adding fun to English e-learning

Some of the teachers using newspaper articles at the Newspaper-in-Education workshop yesterday.

IPOH: What can a few clicks of the mouse do for students who are keen to learn the English language?

The answer, as demonstrated by New Straits Times Newspaper-in-Education facilitators yesterday, had teachers glowing with excitement as they played games using newspaper articles and compared them with online versions found on the NiEXUS website yesterday.

"The language games are good for the weaker students, and they really like to play it," said teacher Gurdeep Singh, 47, of SMK Klian Pauh, Taiping.

Premier school students, who presumably had a better command of the language, could also be more involved in writing stories for "The Continuing Tale" or producing online newsletters.

"It should not just be used by students. Those who have to teach Science and Mathematics in English should also go there. It's a good website." The interactive games were a big hit with students at SK Sri Klebang in Chemor, said English teacher Rosita Mahmood, 49.

Her students, who were introduced to the website during school hours a month ago, even accessed the site at home.

"Those who are from rural areas like things that are hands-on, so they really like it. It's not just chalk and talk," she said.

She observed that the weaker students only needed a little guidance to use the website and learn new words.

"They like to guess the answers for the quiz and they are more than happy when they can find the answers. The better students enjoy the word search and crossword puzzles," she added.

As for former master trainer for English, Yong Hon Chong, yesterday's session was "extraordinary and enlightening".

"It's unique because we learn about Information Technology, which is the in thing for students," said the 52-year-old teacher from SMK Darul Ridwan, Taiping.

Teachers could continue using newspapers to teach in class, with the website as a way to expand the lesson by giving them something challenging to attempt, said NiE assistant manager Hazlina Abdul Aziz.

The updated news articles and respective quizzes were also helpful for relief teachers, she added.

Meanwhile, opinion polls could stir students to develop their argumentative skills, she said, adding that students could also interact with each other by commenting on their contribution to an ongoing story.

"The webpage on 'Writing Prompts' helps them learn the most appropriate word to use."

Students and teachers could also try their hand at being reporters, in producing their front page report on "A Day in Your Life" or publish and print their news bulletin at "My School Rocks" with nine templates to choose from, she said.

NiEXUS can be accessed at http://niexus.emedia.com.my. It is free of charge to schools under the NST's School Sponsorship Programme and those who subscribe to the NST at RM150 (for schools) and RM100 (for parents) a year respectively.
