In a close air combat, or WVR engagement, in 1 V 1 situation, energy management is very important either to stay offensive i.e staying behind the enemy 3 and 9 oclock wing line, or to maneouver in order to out turn the enemy in case of ended up in defensive siuation. Basically dua2 akan fly at corner velocity,around 375 knots, where the best lift can be achieve to ensure the best turn rate and the smallest radius of turn. In the process, 4/5 G required to maintain the turn and of course high power setting required. Even doing 60 deg AOB ,2 G level turn pun on lite aircraft required almost full power. For single engine aircraft, after burner selalunya required to sustain the turn and speed, kalau tak terpaksa la trade of dengan altitude. For twin engine, normally can sustain longer for additional 1 or 2 turns. So bayangkan la kalau losing ,energy ,speed and height or kinetic and potential,both at the same time, nak dapat balik is not that fast. Remember,lost energy mean lost the fight. To get back the speed , have to reduce the bank and unload the plane to 1/4 G at least to get the best accelaration. Kalau you are defensive, that 4/5 sec accelaration or EXTENSION as the fighters jargon says, the guy behind can gain at least 60 deg turning toward you, and FOX2. Normally twin engines planes, the combat thrust to weight ratio is more than 1:1, mean it still can accelerate eventhough flying vertical,so gaining both kinetic and potential at the same time . Classic eg, Rafale punya 1.13 and Gripen 0.94 . And the wing loading of Rafale also lower then Gripen, means Rafale can turn better.
My experience, 1V1 against F16 USAF, RAF Harrier, eventhough guna F5, no problem to capture them in my gunsight without them having any of my image in their video. Yang ada cuma RWR and Betty voice dia org jer sebuk sebab kerap kena lock on and track. Against sama2 gang, A4,MB339 or Hawk ,tak payah cerita la. Against F18, F5 memang kalah la kalau Iv1.
For BVR, its merely depending on the the tactics employed. Basically not much different either 1 or 2 engines, its more like electronic warfare. We used to have 2V2 against USN F14 but they have to give us handicap, no AAMRAM, ASRAM only inside 15 nm. What we did,fly very close formation during ingress, switch of the radar so that they cant detect our radar signal, approaching 15nm splitted left n right , high and low, confusing their weapon officer at the back to select which target to point. If they steer toward the left guy, the other one will convert into them and the one under pursuit turn away and accelarate, stay away at least 6 nm, so that they cant fire their missile. Air Defence Controller play a very important role here to tell us the direction and distant of the bandits and so we play cat n mouse tactic. Finally ,with the small size hard to see F5s, at least one of us happily parked behind them. I got a nice pic of the Tomcat , terkangkang squarely in my gunsight. Terkangkang sebab dia ended up at low speed and the wing automatically swept out.
Well, thats about it, unless somebody ask q, old habit die hard, fighter pilot memang like to tell stories, haha |

Tapi mahal laa... Aku suspect ac ni cam mahal je kos maintenance dia... French mungkin tawarkan harga yg menarik sbb depa desperate nak wat sales, tapi kos maintenance tatau lagi. Takut dia cam keta Proton Savvy, murah utk dibeli, mahal utk dimaintain... Yang menakutkan lagi, Savvy pakai enjin Renault (enjin French) hehehe |

Thanks to the F5 agility, small radar crosssection area, hard to see, just like a needle in the sky. And the most important, our extra pairs of eyes on ground, the Air Defence Controller.
Sebelum airborne , we must have a plan how to engage and kill the bogey by studying the adversaries performance namely their best speed and altitude for the best turn rate and turn radius, their regime of fight, the specific excess energy or Ps, semua tu ada di EM Energy Maneuveribility chart. Each fighter plane ada chart masing2. So kita compare and workout a tactic that force them to enter our regime and avoid fighting in the regime that they have more advantage. Kita kena tau jugak what type of armament yg dia bawak, every types of missile ada cara dia nak defeat. With all the informations, we discuss with the Air Defence Controller yg akan guide kita and come up with a solid tactic. Lepas tu brief everyone on each specific task before we get airborne. Bukan simply airborne jer buta2, buang duit kerajaan jer, hehe.
