Van Persie in line to return against Tottenham

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie is in line to return from injury in Wednesday night's north London derby with Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

Van Persie has been on the sidelines since suffering ankle ligament damage following a challenge by Italy's Giorgio Chiellini in an international friendly last November.

The Dutch striker returned to full training last week and although he was expected to make his first-team comeback against Manchester City at the end of the month he is now set to bolster the Gunners' forward line against their arch rivals.

The loss of Van Persie was a huge blow to Arsenal in their challenge for the Premier League title. He had netted seven goals in 11 Premier League starts before the ankle injury.

Arsenal have had to rely on the goals of Francesc Fabregas - he has bagged 15 in the league this term - to fill the void with Nicklas Bendtner only managing five goals over the league campaign. But with captain Fabregas now out for the rest of the season the return of Van Persie will be a timely boost.

Bendtner is delighted that Van Persie on the verge of a return. "It will be great to have him back," Bendtner told the club's official website. "He had a nasty injury and he has been working really hard in training to get back and if we can have him available for the last games - obviously being out for that long takes a bit of time - but if we can have him available it is a boost for us."

LONDON, 15 April - Jutawan Rusia, Alisher Usmanov menambah lagi persoalan terhadap masa depan pemilikan kelab gergasi Liga Perdana, Arsenal, apabila menolak hasrat untuk tidak mengambilalih kelab.

Usmanov yang mencipta nama dalam industri besi telah mempunyai 26.3 peratus saham di Gunners menerusi pelaburan syarikat Red and White Holdings.

Dalam satu kenyataan kelmarin, menyebut, Red and White “komited untuk melakukan pelaburan panjang bersama Arsenal”, “akan menimbangkan segala pilihan” serta “tidak berhasrat untuk... mengurangkan fleksibiliti di masa hadapan”.

Sementara itu, jutawan Amerika Syarikat, Stan Kroenke pula menjadi pelabur terbesar Arsenal dengan memiliki 29.98 peratus saham, malah turut menjadi pemilik beberapa kelab dalam beberapa jenis sukan lain.

Jika kedua-dua usahawan terbabit, Kroenke atau Usmanov menaikkan saham sehingga 30 peratus, mereka memerlukan perintah undang-undang syarikat England untuk mengesahkan pemilikan terhadap Arsenal.

Spekulasi masa depan pemilikan kelab utara London itu berlaku setelah pengumuman oleh Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith mahu menjual 15.9 peratus saham yang dimilikinya dalam kelab tersebut.

Kroenke pula telah lama mahu untuk mengambilalih Arsenal namun kebelakangan ini niatnya itu beralih kepada hasrat untuk memiliki St Louis Rams, pasukan Amerika Syarikat yang bermain dalam Liga Bola Sepak Kebangsaan (NFL). - AFP

Fabregas 'bodoh' jika tinggalkan Arsenal: Wenger

LONDON: Arsene Wenger menyifatkan Cesc Fabregas 'bodoh' jika mahu meninggalkan Arsenal - kerana semua pemain yang berbuat demikian sebelum ini akhirnya sedar ia satu kesilapan.

Sandro Rosell, yang disebut-sebut sebagai bakal presiden kelab Barcelona, tidak berahsia apabila menyatakan perancangannya untuk mendapatkan khidmat ketua pasukan Gunners, Fabregas dengan harga £50 juta (RM280 juta) pada musim panas ini. Tetapi bos Arsenal, Wenger menegaskan hakikat itu tidak akan menjadi kenyataan dan menyebut betapa Sol Campbell sebagai contoh terbaik yang kononnya menyangka nasib mereka lebih baik di luar Emirates. Campbell, 35, yang menyertai semula Arsenal Januari lalu, diturunkan menentang kelab lamanya Spurs dalam pertemuan sesama jiran utara London, awal pagi tadi.

Wenger berkata: “Semua pemain yang meninggalkan Arsenal mahu kembali, jadi mereka tidak gembira walaupun kelihatan gembira.

“Bila Sol mencapai hajatnya mahu bersama semula, dia tampak agak keliru pada awalnya. Tetapi kini dia lebih matang dan jelas dalam kepalanya dia mahu pergi lebih jauh (bersama Arsenal).

“Saya tidak boleh berhenti bercakap mengenai Fabregas tetapi ada pihak kadang-kala cuba tidak menggembirakan pemain.”
Wenger mengalu-alukan semula kepulangan penyerang Robin van Persie selepas pemain Belanda itu berehat lima bulan kerana kecederaan ligamen buku lali. -Agensi

Wenger: Gunners out of title race

Arsene Wenger conceded the Premier League title after Arsenal were defeated 2-1 by Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

A stunning 30-yard volley from Danny Rose and a second-half strike from Gareth Bale handed Spurs their first league victory over their north London rivals since 1999.

Arsenal, who replied late on through Nicklas Bendtner, trail leaders Chelsea by six points with four games remaining and Wenger admitted the gap is too great to bridge.

"We lost a game we couldn't afford to lose in the title race," said the Gunners boss.

"That shows that we're not mature enough because you can't afford to lose this type of game if you want to win the championship.

"There's too much to do now. We're very unlikely now to win the championship.

"We'll continue to fight but even a point wasn't enough from tonight - we needed three points."
