Klose Guides Bayern To League Cup Win
Miroslav Klose's 29th minute strike saw Bayern Munich beat Schalke 1-0 to win the DFL League Cup in Leipzig, with veteran midfielder Ze Roberto the star of the show.
It was a tight game which Ottmar Hitzfeld's boys approached with a more vigour than Schalke despite a star-studded infirmary.
Schalke had a more settled team, but were hardly on the money, easily shut out by a rather disciplined Bayern side compared to last season.
The Bavarians enjoyed some good spells of possession after a cautious first ten minutes, and Hamit Altintop rattled the woodwork in the 20th minute to set the tone for things to come.
The procession was interrupted when Kahn had to roll back the years to save Ivan Rakitic's superb free-kick.
At the other end, Klose and strike partner Jose Ernesto Sosa - who played just off him - showed promise, and it was indeed the German international who broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark after getting on the end of a superb through ball from the young Argentine.
With a goal in the bag, Bayern began to play with even more confidence, Ze Roberto simply all over the pitch, seemingly ten years younger. Positive signs for Hitzfeld!
There was some pressure from Schalke late in the half, but Bayern kept it clean at the back.
Christian Lell and Altintop came close in quick succession just after the break, before Kahn produced another stunning save to deny Kavin Kuranyi.
Ze Roberto was in his elements again, be it fiesty tackles or bursting runs. Altintop and Lahm both came close towards the end, but it finished 1-0, which was anyway enough for Bayern to win their first trophy this season.
Teams
Schalke: Neuer - Rafinha (Westermann), Bordon, Krstajic, Pander - Ernst, Kobiashvili - Rakitic (Azaouagh), Halil Altintop, L鰒enkrands (Asamoah) - Kuranyi
Bayern: Kahn - Lahm, Lucio, Demichelis, Jansen - Ottl, Z |

Klose strikes as Bayern lift League CupSat 28 Jul, 07:53 PM
BERLIN (AFP) - Miroslav Klose struck for Bayern Munich as the Bavarian giants won the German League Cup with a 1-0 win over Schalke 04 on Saturday.
This was the sixth time Bayern have lifted the trophy since it was created in 1997 and Klose's early goal was enough to give the 20-times German champions victory.
It now means Bayern have already beaten all three teams - including VfB Stuttgart and Werder Bremen - who finished above them in last year's Bundesliga.
Bayern splshed out a reported 69 million euros during the summer to build their own dream team in a bid to cancel out last season - their worst for 11 years - and showed their intentions to win next season's Bundesliga.
"That was a victory of the will," said Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld.
"It was important for us to begin this season with a title after last season's poor results.
"We do not want to over estimate the League Cup win, but we wanted to send out a clear message and we have now beaten the three teams who finished above us last season."
Bayern captain Oliver Kahn was delighted to pick up the impressive six-team trophy and is looking forward to the new season.
"This victory is good for our self-confidence," said Kahn.
"We are in the middle of our preparations for the new season, we won't be getting too carried away with the win, but it's a good start."
Having cost Bayern 12 million euros from Bundesliga rivals Werder Bremen, Klose saved the cup final at Leipzig's sold-out Zentralstadion to score his first competitive goal for his new club.
Bayern were too strong despite missing influential new signing French midfielder Franck Ribery, who scored three goals in the quarter and semi-final wins, but succumbed to a knee injury he picked up in Wedesday's 2-0 win over VfB Stuttgart.
German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger was also out with a knee strain, while Dutch hard-man Mark Van Bommel was suspended after the midfielder was found guilty of unsporting conduct against Stuttgart.
Bayern took the lead after Klose, who missed Wednesday's 2-0 semi-final win at Stuttgart with a leg injury, poached a first half lead.
Klose managed to pick up a loose ball in the penalty area after 29 minutes and lifted it over Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer into the empty net.
Schalke's Serbian defender Mladen Krstajic and Bayern's Brazilian defender Lucio both picked up yellow cards in the dying stages of the first-half as Bayern took their advantage into the break.
Schalke striker Halil Altintop let his frustrations get the better of him when he fouled Klose early in the second-half, with his twin brother Hamit in the Bayern team.
The best chance to equalise fell to Schalke's German international Kevin Kuranyi, in the 58th minute, who unleashed a superb shot which needed a diving save from Kahn.
Bayern open their Bundesliga campaign away to Hansa Rostock on August 11, with defending champions Stuttgart taking on Schalke in the first game of the new season on Friday August 10.

Klose strikes as Bayern survive scare
Berlin - German striker Miroslav Klose saved Bayern Munich's blushes on Monday with an equaliser at minnows Wacker Burghausen as his side made the German Cup's second round after a 4-3 win on penalties.
Striker Thomas Neubert had earlier written himself into Burghausen folklore when he gave the third-division side a 62nd-minute lead after his header beat Bayern keeper Oliver Kahn to delight the home fans in the 11 582-strong crowd.
But Klose struck on 79 minutes, much to Bayern's relief and although extra-time could not separate the sides, the game was settled on penalties and Bayern survived a mighty scare.
Having produced a superb performance, well above his years, Burghausen's 18-year-old goalkeeper Manuel Riemann saved a penalty and scored one, but Bayern's defender Christian Lell hit the winning penalty to shatter the home side's dreams.
"We have seen a good game, both sides created their chances and it could have gone either way," said Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld.
"Sometimes we lacked a bit of luck and Manuel Riemann was immense for them in goal. Full compliments to Burghausen.
"They grew in stature as the game went on and performed well against my side.
"This game had everything you could want in a cup match."
But it was also a shock for a full-strength Bayern side containing several of their big summer signings from their |
