BERLIN, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich have scored a an average of three goals a match this season and their high-flying attack is on target to break the Bundesliga record of 101 goals.
But the new-look Bayern, who destroyed Energie Cottbus 5-0 with five goals in the final half hour on Wednesday, tackle the league's best defence when they travel to second-placed Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday (1330 GMT). Germany striker Miroslav Klose scored the fourth hat-trick of his career against Cottbus, increasing his lead atop the league scoring charts with eight goals in six matches, while his partner strike partner, Italy's Luca Toni, has five. Bayern, who in recent years played conservatively and often seemed content to win 1-0, now have 21 goals and 17 points in seven matches. If they can keep up that pace they will have more goals than last season's total of 55 by Christmas. THREE STRAIGHT Leverkusen, who have conceded just three goals in seven games thanks partly to outstanding goalkeeper Rene Adler, are also on a roll with three straight victories and 14 points. They won 2-1 at Nuremberg on Wednesday. Bayern's attack has been awesome at times, inspired by newcomer Franck Ribery of France in midfield as well as Klose and Toni. "It's not as easy as it looks," Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said. "It's nice to win by so many goals and still know there are things that can be improved upon." The unexpectedly successful harmony between newcomers Klose and Toni has been hard for anyone to stop. They relegated Germany striker Lukas Podolski to the bench after chasing previous strikers Roy Makaay and Claudio Pizarro out of town. Klose, who has experienced long droughts in his career at former clubs Kaiserslautern and Werder Bremen, does not want to discuss the good run. "Let's not talk too much about it. Otherwise it'll be ruined," he said. |
