Red Star Belgrade 2 Bayern Munich 3
Bayern Munich teenager Toni Kroos came off the bench to rescue his side in their UEFA Cup Group F opener against Red Star Belgrade on Thursday.
The 17-year-old set up a late equaliser for Miroslav Klose before hitting a dramatic winner direct from an injury-time free-kick.
The hosts went ahead after 16 minutes through Ognjen Koroman, but the lead lasted only four minutes before Klose netted his first UEFA Cup goal for Bayern.
Nenad Milijas put Red Star ahead for the second time in the 74th minute and their advantage lasted a little longer this time before Klose again levelled matters five minutes from time from Kroos' cross.
And as the game entered stoppage time, substitute Kroos stole the headlines as he scored directly from a free-kick just seconds after Milan Bajalica was given his marching orders by Italian referee Matteo Trefoloni.
The partisan crowd urged the home side forward and Bayern needed a bit of time to get used to the hostile atmosphere.
Before they knew it, they were behind. Philipp Lahm was playing his first game in over a month and it showed as Koroman left him standing before firing an angled shot low past Michael Rensing into the far corner.
Bayern's reply was almost immediate with Klose reacting quickest as Lucio's shot was fumbled by Red Star goalkeeper Ivan Randjelovic, allowing the Germany international to pounce.
He had two chances to get a second in the first half, but hit a volley straight at Randjelovic before being unable to head a powerful Lukas Podolski cross on target.
Lahm was having a torrid time at right-back and Koroman almost put the home side ahead for a second time after stealing the ball from the defender, running half the length of the field and hitting a shot just wide of the far post.
Bayern appeared to be waiting for their opponents to tire, but before that happened they found themselves behind for a second time.
Milijas was allowed to come forward unchallenged and his shot from 25 yards dipped into the corner.
Rensing reacted quite late, by which time he could no longer reach the ball as it rippled the back of the net.
It was the first time Bayern had conceded two goals in any competitive game all season, and it seemed set to cause their first loss of the campaign too, until Klose stepped up for his second.
Substitute Kroos whipped in a dangerous free-kick which the Germany striker met with his head from close range, leaving Randjelovic no chance.
Red Star lost Bajalica to a second yellow card as the game entered stoppage time and, within seconds, the German side were ahead as another Kroos free-kick ended in the back of the net - this time without taking a single touch on its way in.

Bundesliga Roundup, Oct. 27
BERLIN (AP) - Naldo's 34th-minute header lifted Werder Bremen to a 1-1 draw against Schalke on Saturday in a battle of Bundesliga title hopefuls.
Schalke had taken the lead with a free kick by Carlos Grossmueller in the 14th minute, but visiting Bremen went home with the point it wanted from a fast-paced match in front of 61,000 fans at Veltins Arena. Schalke wasn't as happy after its winless streak reached three league matches and it closed out a rough week which included a 2-0 loss to Chelsea in the Champions League. "From their view they thought they had the better chances, and we thought we had the better chances," Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf said. "But neither got the goal, so the draw was deserved. But it was a strong performance by both teams." VfB Stuttgart, off to the worst start for a defending champion in Bundesliga history , ended two months without a win when it edged Bayer Leverkusen 1-0.
Saturday's big winner may be Bayern Munich which could take a huge lead over its rivals by beating Borussia Dortmund on Sunday. That would move it eight points clear of second-placed Bremen and 11 ahead of fifth-placed Schalke. :victory: Grossmueller's free kick found a hole in the wall and left Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese no chance. Naldo leveled for Bremen by putting in Torsten Fring's cross with a running header. Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had a good game after being heavily criticized following two costly blunders in the last two games. The 21-year-old, considered a huge talent, had his best moment in the 67th minute when he ran out to turn away an attempt by Hugo Almeida. "I showed today I can do it better," Neuer said. "I've learned you have to stay concentrated the whole game." Bremen's Per Mertesacker nearly had an own goal in the 68th minute, but his save with the feet hit the right post. In the 10th minute, a free kick by Schalke midfielder Christian Pander also ricocheted off the right post. Bremen had a four-match winning streak snapped. Stuttgart edged Leverkusen on a 72nd-minute goal by Andreas Beck, his first Bundesliga goal. Teammate Mario Gomez lost the ball in a crowd and it came to him for a close shot.

Bayern Munich ties Borussia to stay unbeaten
BERLIN (AP) -- German league leader Bayern Munich tied Borussia Dortmund 0-0 and is unbeaten 11 games into the season.
Bayern entered the game as the Bundesliga's most prolific team with 27 goals, and Dortmund's defense ranked among the worst. But Dortmund took control after halftime before a crowd of 81,000.
Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld pointed to a tough UEFA Cup win in Belgrade on Thursday.
"We were very tired," Hitzfeld said. "The game against Red Star on that terrible pitch cost us a lot of energy." |
