At last, the extent of Fabio Capello's revolution is there for all to see. The Italian has already changed his players' diets, off-field attire and performance levels. He has told Wayne Rooney and Ashley Cole to buck up their behaviour. Now, finally, he has a kit fit for a new, improved England.
Gone is the red trim which adorned England's other three strips in the last five years. The new shirt is plain, without frill, just like Capello's regime. It is whiter than white, as he expects his players to be.
More than David Beckham's quest to better Bobby Moore's appearance record, the really important run-out at Wembley yesterday was the kit, and it was, by and large, a success.
According to Umbro's official blurb, the new shirt has been designed with the players' involvement "from start to finish, so it is literally tailored by England."
Should that be the case, Rio Ferdinand and co should be congratulated on avoiding the temptation to have their squad numbers done in diamante or their shoulders coated in mink piping.
What they have instead, though, is a shirt that harks back to the days when international football was more than an inconvenient break from the club game, complete with collar and button. This is, apparently, a way of "regulating internal temperature", and again, the players deserve credit for steadfastly refusing to fiddle with their collars when they are supposed to be marking at corners.
