Bayern Munich ready to learn about Braga in UEFA Cup
LONDON - Bayern Munich is finding the UEFA Cup a journey of discovery.
Players and staff have had to take a crash course to learn about Bayern's next group stage opponent - Portugal's SC Braga.
"Honestly, I can't name a single player from Braga," midfielder Mark van Bommel said. "But we'll get enough information over the next few days and we'll be well prepared for the match."
Normally used to facing bigger names in the Champions League, Bayern dropped to the UEFA Cup after finishing fourth in the Bundesliga last season.
At least, the last time it played in the UEFA Cup, in 1996, it won the title.
But while Bayern is leading the Bundesliga, everything isn't going its way in the UEFA Cup.
It needed an injury-time winner to beat Red Star Belgrade in its opening match, and drew 2-2 at home to Bolton, a struggling English Premier League club.
"It's important for us that we know that if we win, we'll advance," Bayern's leading scorer Miroslav Klose said.
Bayern could miss central defenders Daniel van Buyten and Martin Demichelis through illness and injury. Striker Lukas Podolski is out with a bruised toe, while midfielder Jose Ernesto Sosa is doubtful with back pains.
Bayern leads Group F, and in Thursday's other group match Bolton meets Aris. Bayern has four points, followed by Aris with three, Bolton with two, Braga with one and Red Star yet to earn a point.
Bolton got a big boost for its game against Aris when it upset Manchester United 1-0 in the Premier League on Saturday. That lifted it out of the relegation zone for the first time this season and was the first win for manager Gary Megson, who took over the club on Oct. 25.
"This result has got to be a turning point for us," Bolton defender Nicky Hunt said.
Fiorentina wants to win at AEK Athens as a mark of respect for the wife of coach Cesare Prandelli, who died of breast cancer on Monday. The entire team will attend her funeral in northern Italy on Wednesday and then fly to Greece.
Prandelli missed Fiorentina's 0-0 draw with Reggina in the Serie A on Sunday because of his wife's illness.
Fiorentina, which beat Elfsborg 6-1 in its last game, leads Group C with four points, level with Villarreal. Elfsborg hosts Mlada Boleslav in the other group game.
Tottenham has settled under new manager Juande Ramos - who guided Sevilla to the last two UEFA Cup titles. But Spurs missed its chance to claim its first Premier League away win of the season by conceding an injury-time penalty to West Ham, tying the match 1-1.
Spurs hosts Aalborg on Thursday, while 2000 champion Galatasaray is at Panionios in the other Group G game.
Zenit St. Petersburg plays FC Nuremberg after winning the Russian league title for the first time since the breakup of the Soviet Union. Zenit coach Dick Advocaat marked the title triumph by signing a one-year contract extension. Zenit has four points in Group A, two behind leader Everton. AZ Alkmaar hosts Larissa in the other match. Hamburger SV is looking for its second straight win in the UEFA Cup to continue its good form from the Bundesliga, where it is third, only a point from Bayern, after a 2-0 win over Hansa Rostock on Saturday. Hamburg coach Huub Stevens is wary of French side Rennes despite its league loss to Lyon on Saturday. "They are a top side who will not make it easy for us like Rostock did last Sunday," Stevens said. Stevens announced last week that he will leave the club at the end of the season to coach PSV Eindhoven and be close to his ailing wife in the Netherlands. SK Brann hosts Dinamo Zagreb in the other Group D game. In Thursday's other matches, it's: Atletico Madrid versus Aberdeen; Lokomotiv Moscow versus FC Copenhagen; Sparta Prague versus Spartak Moscow; FC Zurich versus Toulouse; and Helsingborgs versus Austria Vienna |

Football: Bremen, Hamburg aim to pip Bayerndraw sudah ler
BERLIN: Bayern Munich would be forgiven for hoping for a draw when Werder Bremen welcome fellow title contenders SV Hamburg for the German Bundesliga's northern derby today.
[/table]In what has been a competitive start to the league season, Bremen, and more surprisingly Hamburg, have kept pace with the German giants who have a one-point lead going into this weekend's fixtures.
A win for either Bremen or Hamburg would prompt a new league leader for the first time this season, although celebrations are likely to be tempered by the fact that Bayern are likely to dominate struggling Armenia Bielefeld tomorrow.
The result of a draw in what is considered one of the hottest derbies in northern Germany would be the best result for Bayern, and could prove to be a turning point in the league season.
Whatever the outcome, Hamburg captain and midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart, who scored one of the goals in the 3-0 UEFA Cup rout of French side on Thursday, believes there will be plenty of drama.
"It promises to be a highly competitive match between two sides that have very little between them," said the Dutchman to twice-weekly magazine Kicker.
Bremen, driven by midfield talents of Diego, and Van der Vaart's Hamburg have both been keeping Bayern under pressure so far this campaign.
All three sides are alone in boasting nine wins from 14 matches, although Bayern top the other when it comes to defeats having conceded only once this season.
If the recent form of Bremen and Hamburg is anything to go by, Bayern should be worried -- after hesitant starts to the season both sides have overcome defeats in mid-September to go on nine-match unbeaten streaks which include seven wins. -- AFP

Bundesliga - Ribery leads Bayern top of table Eurosport - Sun, 02 Dec 21:33:00 2007
France midfielder Franck Riberypropelled Bayern Munich back to first place in the Bundesliga with asplendid first-half goal in a 1-0 victory in the rain at ArminiaBielefeld.
More Stories
Ribery's goal in the 22nd minute, his fourth of the season, came against the run of play, turned the match around and put Bayernback into first place after Werder Bremen temporarily moved ahead onSaturday with their 2-1 win over Hamburg SV.
Bayern lead the table with 34 points ahead of Werder's 33 and HSV's 30. In Sunday's other match, Ivica Grlic scored in the 71st minute to take MSV Duisburg to a 1-0 win over Nuremberg.
Bielefeldseemed more comfortable at first in the atrocious weather conditions infront of 23,800 rain-drenched fans and thoroughly dominated the first20 minutes, repeatedly testing Bayern captain Oliver Kahn.
Jonas Kamperwas just wide with a crisp free kick in the fourth minute and thenforced Kahn to his knees to fist away a dipping long-range blast fiveminutes later. A Sibusiso Zuma shot in the 20th minute bounced off the right post.
"It was a difficult match and it took us a while to get our rhythm," Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld told Premiere Television.
"It took a long time but after 20 minutes we finally got going and after we got ahead we didn't let them near our goal."
Ribery, who was also superb last week in Bayern's 2-1 win against VfL Wolfsburgwith one goal and an assist, once again proved he was worth every centof the Bundesliga record 25 million euros ($37 million) transfer fee inthe off-season.
"I'm very pleased," said Ribery, taking onboard the Bielefeld fans' taunts before the match ("Who needs Riberywhen we have Kamper"). After scoring his goal, Ribery made mockinggestures to the Bielefeld fans, drawing jeers.
"I wanted toget the three points to take back to Munich," added Ribery, who hasbeen taking intensive German lessons. "But you have to hand it toBielefeld. They played aggressively."
Bielefeld coach Ernst Mittendorp was pleased despite losing.
"It was an incredibly close match to the final whistle. I'm not at all disappointed. I think we played a fantastic match."
Bielefeld's keeper Hain was injured in a collision just before halftime with Bayern striker Miroslav Klose. He managed to finish the half but was taken to hospital with concussion.
Hitzfeldsaid Bayern were hungry to clinch the unofficial "autumn championship"before the winter break after two more rounds. Bayern dominated theearly part of the season before stumbling and allowing both WerderBremen and HSV back into the race. |

Bundesliga - Magath coy on Lehmann bid Eurosport - Mon, 03 Dec 17:36:00 2007
Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath has remained coy on the possibility of singing out-of-favour Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.

Lehmann has lost his place in the Gunners starting line-up to Spaniard Manuel Almunia, but the Germany international is desperate for first team football ahead of the summer's European Championships.
And, with Wolfsburg number one Simon Jentzschsuffering a crisis of form and confidence that saw him subbed athalf-time during the 2-2 draw with Frankfurt, Wolfsburg have emerged ascandidates for the veteran former Dortmund man in January.
"Iam not bothered about looking for a new goalkeeper right now," formerBayern Munich and Stuttgart coach Magath claimed. "Regarding Lehmann oranyone else for that matter it is nothing but speculation and I'm notsaying anything.
"It is not for me to say."
Valencia keeper Timo Hildebrand- who Magath brought through at Stuttgart - has also been linked afterfailing to force Santiago Canazares out since arriving in the summer. But, despite Jentzsch's problems, Magath will use the presence ofnumber two Andre Lenz to bring the best out of the 31-year-old.
"This week I will watch how they both react in training," he said.
"Afterwards I'll decide who plays on Saturday at Stuttgart."
