Top seed and world number one Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia is into his first world final after routing titleholder Chen Jin 21-13 21-9 in the Yonex BWF World Championship semi-finals on Saturday.
 The head-to-head between the two rivals had stood at 7-2 and Chong Wei underlined his advantage again with a superb display, smashing cross-court ferociously and defending brilliantly whenever necessary.
He told reporters: "I've prepared well for the tournament and I had to be at my best today."
The Malaysian was generally in control in the first game but but trailed 4-0 in the second as Chen (pictured right) tried to assert.
However, he could not hold on and after Chong Wei levelled at 7-7 he raced away to secure his place in a world championship final for the first time.
 Deposed champion Chen said: "I thought I was average today and he was very good. He was covering the court well."
In the first women's singles semi-final, last year's runner-up Wang Xin was beaten 21-14 21-15 by second seed Wang Yihan (pictured left).
The loser said: "I wasn't very satisfied with my own performance. We train together so it's hard to play against each other."
There was disappointment for the Chinese sixth seeds Xu Chen and Ma Jin who had to retire from their mixed semi with top seeded compatriots Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei after losing the first game 21-17. Ma suffered a leg injury and could not continue.
 In the men's doubles, South Korea is on-course for a guaranteed gold medal as the first of their two semi-finalist pairs, Ko Sung Hyun and Yoo Yeon Seong (pictured right), has marched into the final with a 21-19 21-17 victory over Indonesia's Mohammad Ahsan and Bona Septano.
Yoo, who turns 25 today, said: "It's a great present for me. I would like to delay my birthday to tomorrow and get an even better present."
"Teechnically we were very even but we have worked on our psychological skills to prepare for this tournament and we used them today. We clicked very well today."
Even as the Indonesians were surprised semi-finalists in London, their disappointment were evident.
Ahsan said: "We are a bit disappointed. A bronze medal is not enoug. We wanted to be in the final but we didn't play to our maximum."
"We are thankful for getting bronze but our main ambition was always to win the tournament, our aim is to win gold next time."
The second session of the semi-finals of the 2011 Yonex BWF World Championships will resume this evening, 5pm, London time. |
