Cannavaro Sccops Up More Awards At Calcio Oscars

At the "Oscar del Calcio" there were more prestigious accolades for the World Cup winning Italian captain.

Fabio Cannavaro was the big winner at the Oscar del Calcio ceremony as he was awarded the Italian Player of the Year award, as well as the Best Defender and Best Overall Player of 2006 awards by members of the Italian Players' Association in Milan this evening.

The Real Madrid man, who left Juventus following the Calciopoli scandal, has enjoyed a remarkable last 12 months. He won the Scudetto with Juve, before it was revoked and assigned to Inter, and in the summer he captained the Azzurri to an unforgettable World Cup triumph.

The veteran defender also won the highly prestigious Ballon D'Or award organized by France Football magazine and was named Fifa World Player of the Year in December.

Fellow World Cup winners Daniele De Rossi, Gigi Buffon, and Luca Toni were also rewarded for their heroics on Monday, with De Rossi winning the Young Player category, Buffon the goalkeeping award (now there's a surprise...), and Toni won for Best Striker.

Delvecchio gets three-match ban
ROME: Sampdoria midfielder Gennaro Delvecchio has been given a three-match ban for headbutting Inter Milan defender Marco Materazzi, the Italian football league抯 disciplinary commission said on Tuesday. Delvecchio was sent off after only seven minutes of last Sunday抯 Serie A match in Genoa following an altercation with the Italian World Cup winner.
