Wenger tells board to organise Cole's departure

ARSÈNE WENGER has told the Arsenal board to complete the sale of Ashley Cole to Chelsea by the end of this week. The Arsenal manager has grown weary of what is in danger of becoming a never-ending saga and yesterday he instructed David Dein, the club抯 vice-chairman, to get the deal done as soon as possible.
Having been told by Cole of his desire to leave two weeks ago, Wenger has not included him in his plans for the season, which begins at the Emirates Stadium against Aston Villa on Saturday. The England defender has been training at London Colney, but he did not feature in the club抯 photo call last week and is not expected to play at the weekend.
Wenger is concerned that Cole抯 continued presence at the club is affecting his team抯 morale. The Frenchman also needs time to strengthen his squad if Cole does leave, with much of the money to be spent on Curtis Davies.
West Bromwich Albion are demanding £10 million for the 21-year-old defender but are likely to settle for £7 million.
Having told Chelsea ten days ago that he wanted the deal done by the end of last week, Wenger has repeated this message to his club, whom he feels are holding up the sale. With Dein implacably opposed to the transfer, there is increasing tension about how best to proceed, with a split between those eager to do business as quickly as possible and those who are determined to hold out for the highest price.
Having rejected a formal bid of £16.5 million and an intimated offer of nearer £20 million, Dein has staked his reputation on achieving the club抯 £25 million asking price, although many feel that he has overplayed his hand. In addition to gaining the best deal for Arsenal, he is weighed down by matters of personal pride and politics because he does not want to be seen handing a big asset to their main rivals, while there is also his antipathy towards Peter Kenyon, the Chelsea chief executive, to consider.
In his forthcoming autobiography, Cole is expected to blame Dein for his decision to leave the club, as a result of alleged betrayals over his contract talks and the infamous 搕apping-up |

Toure: We can catch Chelsea
"I am definitely the old man in this team, but we have a big squad and the younger players are doing very well," said Toure.
"The best thing for Arsenal is that we do not only have one player, we have a lot of players who are improving, and we saw that in the World Cup.
"We have a lot of players who are more mature now.
"When you see the run in the Champions League, you can see that if we are really, really focused on The Premiership, then we can do it.

Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has revealed that he played through the pain barrier at the World Cup and that he has yet to fully recover from the fitness problems he experienced in Germany.
"After one week of practice (with the Germany team back in May) I had physical problems and played the full World Cup with them," Lehmann said.
"I still have problems right now. 
"At the end of the day nobody can tell you what it is but the only thing that was different from my club were the boots and that is not acceptable at all.
"I don't have to reveal my problems but I have had massive problems during the World Cup.
"It is getting better right now but never again will I agree to play in a different product than I do at Arsenal."
Lehmann also declared that Arsenal bosses were furious about the whole situation.
"The club also says if you return with problems from the national team and the only difference is the shoes then we have to reconsider whether you can still go there," he commented.
"Arsenal are interested in having their players return healthy from the World Cup.
"If you have to play with different boots during the World Cup - or again next month in the qualifier - and then have problems, that is not acceptable at all."
