INTER START NEW YEAR WITH VICTORY
Thursday, 06 January 2005 17:00:38
LIVORNO - Inter showed character and determination to keep a spirited Livorno side at bay and win their first match of 2005 by two goals to nil thanks to efforts in each half from Materazzi and Vieri.
Adriano squandered a chance to give the Nerazzurri a 25th-minute lead at the Armando Picchi Stadium, pulling his spot kick wide of the right post after Alessandro Lucarelli handled the ball in the Tuscan penalty box. But Marco Materazzi, on for an injured Mihajlovic, made amends just before the half-time break with a far-post header from Andy van der Meyde's corner.
Inter were awarded a second penalty with a quarter of an hour remaining after Giallombardo brought down van der Meyde. Christian Vieri obliged, beating Amelia with a fiercely-struck shot to take his tally for the season to seven goals.
The victory sees the Nerazzurri remain fourth in the Serie A table along with this Sunday's opponents Sampdoria, who beat third-placed Udinese 2-0.

Inter Milan chief Moratti revives push for Man Utd's Giggs
tribalfootball.com - January 7, 2005
Inter Milan supremo Massimo Moratti has resumed his bid to prise Ryan Giggs away from Manchester United.
Moratti is considering Giggs after being frustrated by Lazio president Claudio Lotito in his efforts to land Brazilian Cesar.
If negotiations with Lazio continue to stall, Moratti will turn his attentions to Giggs, despite the Welshman's current hamstring injury.
Giggs is now inside the last 18 months of his present contract and had so far refused to sign a new, one-year extension.
Inter are ready to meet Giggs' demand of a deal taking him up to 2008, with coach Roberto Mancini at his wit's end as he tries to find a solution to his problems on the left-side of midfield. |

Serie A Week 18 - 9/1/04 (15.00)
Inter 3 - 2 Sampdoria
Tonetto 44 (S), Kutuzov 82 (S), Martins 88 (I), Vieri 91 (I), Recoba 94 (I)
San Siro
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roberto Mancini's former club was about to inflict Inter's first defeat of the season, but with three goals in six incredible minutes they completed a comeback from 2-0 down to win 3-2.
Both these teams were level on 27 points going into this game, so it was a head-to-head showdown for the fourth Champions' League spot. It also represented a moving occasion for Roberto Mancini, who was a symbol of Sampdoria for a decade.
Inter were without Edgar Davids, Juan Sebastian Veron, Julio Cruz, Sinisa Mihajlovic and the suspended Andy van der Meyde, but welcomed Ivan Cordoba back from a ban. Fabio Bazzani was not even on the bench, having made the trip to Rome in order to finalise his move to Lazio.
Christian Vieri marked his 200th Serie A appearance, as Adriano started despite a dip in form that saw him miss two consecutive penalties. Alvaro Recoba was on the bench against what many believe will be his future club, as he'd hook up with his former Venezia boss Walter Novellino.
Sampdoria had a good start, but Adriano really should have given Inter the lead after six minutes, exchanging passes with Vieri and firing wide with only the 'keeper to beat. Moments later the Brazilian combined well with Esteban Cambiasso and his shot was tipped over the bar.
Adriano's missile from 20 metres skimmed the woodwork, but Sampdoria finally came out of their shell after 32 minutes with the Inter defence desperately clearing a dangerous Aimo Diana cross.
Adriano set up Cambiasso's strike and Christian Vieri's downward header were both well saved by under-siege Francesco Antonioli, but Francesco Flachi was furious when his promising move was halted for a free kick instead of allowing the advantage.
Despite all the pressure, it was Sampdoria who took the lead on the stroke of half-time. Max Tonetto took the defence by surprise out wide on the left, sidefooting a long Diana cross into the far corner.
The Blucerchiati were now in a position to make the most of their counter-attacks, but Inter poured forward with three great scoring opportunities in quick succession. Vieri accidentally charged down Emre's shot, then Stankovic had his effort saved and Adriano's bicycle-kick was cleared.
Francesco Toldo was at full stretch to fingertip Francesco Flachi's effort off target, then at the other end Falcone bravely dived in front of Adriano's shot - a decision that forced him to limp off.
Sampdoria nearly doubled their lead when Fausto Rossini turned Flachi's splendid cutback over the bar from seven yards.
It was an entertaining second half with shots raining in from both sides and saves on Cambiasso, Stankovic and Flachi.
Just as the Nerazzurri were piling on the pressure, Sampdoria struck on the break. Flachi's pass left the only remaining Inter defender stranded as Vitali Kutuzov - owned by Milan - struck into the roof of the net.
Substitute Alvaro Recoba's fierce drive thumped the upright with Antonioli beaten, but the game was put back in doubt with three minutes left on the clock, as Obafemi Martins dribbled past several defenders to score a splendid solo effort.
It turned into a siege, as Martins saw his header charged down by Zenoni, possibly by his arm, but deep into stoppages the Nigerian kept the ball in and hooked it back for Vieri's volley to grab an incredible equaliser.
With the momentum in their favour, the Nerazzurri kept going and Antonioli needed a great save to prevent Recoba making it 3-2. It was only a warning, as seconds later Recoba grabbed the unbelievable victory for Inter with a fierce missile from the edge of the box.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Inter: Toldo; J Zanetti, Cordoba, Materazzi, Favalli; Emre, C Zanetti (Martins 65), Cambiasso, Stankovic; Vieri, Adriano (Recoba 77)
Sampdoria: Antonioli; Zenoni, Castellini, Falcone (Pavan 59), Pisano; Diana, Palombo, Volpi, Tonetto; Flachi, Rossini (Kutuzov 74)

Serie A Wrap: Week 18 - Inter's Amazing Comeback
This type of story was made for the Inter team of this season. Mancini抯 men were two-nil down with just minutes remaining before his team produced the most fascinating display of heart and determination to not only pull back the deficit, but to go on and win the game. Against the run of play Max Tonetto抯 angled strike put Sampdoria into a one-nil lead on the stroke of half time. Sampdoria countered to then go into a two-goal lead thanks to the pacey Belorusian striker Vitaly Kutozov (83). Obafemi Martins quickly gave Inter a lifeline with two minutes of normal time remaining. Within sixty seconds, Christian Vieri poked the ball in after another pacey run of Obafemi Martins who was the spark in Inter抯 revival. Adriano under-performed and was substituted just before Samp抯 second, but it was his replacement Alvaro Recoba who grabbed the headlines with a screamer from thirty yards. This result keeps Inter抯 unbeaten record in tact. The Nerazzuri remain in fourth position, moving three points away from Sampdoria who are also vying for a Champions League place.

INTER STUN SAMP AT SAN SIRO
Sunday, 09 January 2005 17:20:27
MILAN - The Nerazzurri overturned a two-goal deficit to edge Sampdoria 3-2 in a heart-stopping Serie A Week 18 encounter at the San Siro thanks to late strikes from Martins, Vieri and Recoba.
Inspired goalkeeping by Antonioli saw Cambiasso denied three times in a first half during which Adriano, Vieri and Materazzi were also presented with scoring chances. Against the run of play, the Blucerchiati took the lead on the stroke of half time when Tonetto found the bottom right-hand corner with a diagonal shot from Diana's first-time cross.
Inter continued to dominate after the restart and had more chances before Walter Novellino's side built on their lead with seven minutes left when substitute Kutuzov brought down a Diana cross then thumped the ball past Toldo.
But Inter scored three in a dramatic finale to preserve their long unbeaten run and, more importantly, keep pace with the Serie A front runners. Obafemi Martins gave the Nerazzurri a lifeline with two minutes of normal time remaining. The Nigerian latched on to Recoba's forward pass then turned Castellini before scoring with the outside of his left foot.
Christian Vieri celebrated his 200th Serie A match with the equaliser a minute into added time with a close-range shot from Martin's acrobatic cross. Then in the 94th minute Alvaro Recoba completed the incredible comeback with a long-range shot from Dejan Stankovic's cut-back which found the bottom left-hand corner and sparked wild celebrations on the stands.

BOLOGNA - Inter beat Bologna 3-1 at the Dall'Ara to advance to the last eight of the Coppa Italia TIM by an aggregate score of 6-2. Obafemi Martins picked up where he left off at the San Siro last Sunday with all three of the Nerazzurri's goals in a devastating second-half performance.
