Gold Remains Firm After Surging on Bernanke's Dovish Comments
by Peter A. Grant
July 11, AM

Gold surged Wednesday afternoon after Fed chairman Bernanke made comments that reassured markets that the central bank wouldn't be tightening policy any time soon. The yellow metal surged to two-week highs just shy of the 1300.00/1301.30 resistance level.

Just after the June 19th policy statement and presser, we pondered when Bernanke would start walking back the expectations he himself set. I believe we got our answer yesterday. It took less than a month.

After letting some of the air out of the stock and bond bubbles in recent weeks, the old dovish Ben Bernanke — the one that markets adore — resurfaced. “I think you can only conclude that highly accommodative monetary policy for the foreseeable future is what's needed in the U.S. economy,” the Fed chairman said.

The economy needs that highly accommodative monetary policy because, as we suggested yesterday, "the much heralded U.S. economic recovery simply isn't really much of a recovery at all." Recent downward revisions to Q2 growth forecasts, along with continued softness in the labor market and the absence of inflation may have been the catalyst for the latest swing of the Bernanke policy pendulum.

Today's U.S. data are a case in point: Initial jobless claims surged 16k, on expectations of a drop of 8k. Meanwhile, import and export prices fell for a fourth consecutive month.

The FOMC minutes showed that the members remain divided on QE tapering. However, in also stating the Fed "would have to push back" against conditions that "jeopardize the achievement of our inflation and employment objectives," Bernanke seems to suggests that he would indeed consider increasing asset purchases if conditions warranted such action.

This of course is the old "data dependency" line restate. And the market seems to be heeding the message this time...at least for now.

Undoubtedly, monetary policy expectations will continue to swing as the data roll in. It therefore might be prudent to heed the advice proffered yesterday, prior to the FOMC minutes and the Bernanke speech, by our founder and President, Michael J. Kosares : "Own gold. Sit back. Watch the circus."

Gold Firms on Weaker Dollar, Bernanke Expectations
by Peter A. Grant
July 15, AM

Gold moved back within striking distance of last week's high at 1298.90, underpinned by renewed dollar weakness and a warmer than expected inflation reading for June. Expectations that Fed chairman Bernanke is going to reiterate his rediscovered dovishness before Congress later in the week is also seen as supportive to the yellow metal.

U.S. CPI data for June came in at +0.5% m/m, and 1.8% y/y. Median expectations were at +0.3%. CPI is not the preferred inflation measure of the Fed, but it is broadly reflective of a below target inflation environment. In other words, though slightly higher than expected, the CPI print is unlikely to be concerning to Bernanke. He'll continue to categorize inflation expectations as "well anchored."

U.S. industrial production for June met expectations at +0.3%. Meanwhile, the NAHB housing market index surged to 57 in Jul, beating expectations.

Kansas City Fed hawk Ester George said today in an interview that now is the time to start adjusting QE. George has been a consistent dissenter within the FOMC since replacing retired über-hawk Tom Hoenig. Bernanke on the other hand, is likely to continue walking-back the more hawkish expectations that he himself fostered after the June FOMC meeting, when he speaks before Congress on Wednesday and Thursday.

I continue to believe that the Fed will not begin scaling back QE this year, and quite likely not 2014 either. Longer-term, I wouldn't be surprised to find us following the trail blazed by Japan: Decades of anemic growth and decades of central bank asset purchases that were supposed to reinvigorate the moribund economy, but never did. More recently Japan doubled down and pledged essentially to do whatever it takes to stop the deflationary spiral. Will the Fed come to that junction in the trail when day?

Whatever path the Fed ultimately takes, be assured there will be consequences, and as USAGOLD founder and President lays out in his post today, In "a banquet of consequences" deficits, gold matter.
