Primera Liga Best XI (Round 8)

Goalkeepers were the centre of attention in the eighth round of games in la Primera, as the men between the sticks proved to be very influential in several matches across the country.

Goalkeeper

C?ar (Real Zaragoza): The 35-year-old custodian was strong, aggressive and decisive against Atl?ico. After making one point-blank save from Luciano Galletti's header he proved to be strong in the air and commanded the area well. His efforts were rewarded when ?car netted a later winner.

Defenders

Rodolfo Arruabarrena (Villarreal): It may not be a contender for goal of the season, but the Argentinian full-back's effort at Real Sociedad proved to be crucial. An unsung hero last season as the Yellow Submarine reached the Champions League semi finals, he deserved his moment in the spotlight.

Gabriel Milito (Real Zaragoza): Atl?ico Madrid may have looked disjointed going forward, but one main reason for that was the strength and bite shown by Zaragoza's defence, which was marshalled superbly by Gabi Milito, who made Fernando Torres look very ordinary.

David Belenguer (Getafe): All the talk before Depor's visit to the Alfonso P?ez was whether Riki would net against the club he left during the summer. The fact that the striker did not even have a shot on target is due, in large part, to Belenguer's outstanding performance at the back.

Fernando Navarro (Real Mallorca): Having been tutored in Bar? school of football, the full-back has found his nich? at Mallorca and looked as assured in the tackle as he did when searching out team-mates with short and long passes as the Balearic side picked up an impressive win at Betis.

Midfielders

J?us Navas (Sevilla): The youngster's skill and pace is well known, but few teams have yet found a way to stop him. Against Celta he was on fire as he rampaged up and down the right wing and was the focal point for the majority of the visitors' breakaway moves. Arguably, player of the week.

Nacho (Getafe): Bernd Schuster's side has very few, if any, star names, but it is that fact that makes them so effective. Nacho does not win many headlines, but his display, which included a goal, after coming off the bench for the final 38 minutes on Sunday ensured that he made the papers on Monday morning.

Ronaldinho (FC Barcelona): Despite continuously being berated for under-performing this season, the Brazilian proved once again how vital he is to Bar?'s cause. After firing home a penalty, he became the club's top scorer with a rare but superbly executed header against Recreativo.

Robinho (Real Madrid): Fabio Capello's side, by the coach's own admission, struggled to perform for long periods against N?tic, but despite that Robinho still excited when he had possession and ensured victory for his team with a stunning finish for Madrid's third goal.

Forwards

Juan Arango (Real Mallorca): The Venezuelan is one of Spanish football's true unsung heroes. Against Betis he was at the centre of everything that his side produced going forward and was unlucky not to add his name to the scoresheet after seeing several efforts fail to beat Pedro Contreras.

Pedro Munitis (Racing Santander): While Valencia were worried about the aerial threat posed by giant striker Nicola Zigic, it was amusing and praiseworthy that the smallest player on the pitch used his cunning to win the game for Racing with a header. Pestered Los Ch?'s rearguard constantly.

On the bench

It was a weekend for goalkeeping heroics. V?tor Vald?' first-minute save against Recre set the tone, before I?ki Lafuente earned Athletic Bilbao a point with some fine stops at Osasuna, while Iker Casillas saw a lot of action and stood for Real Madrid at N?tic and Jos? Manuel Pinto prevented Celtsa losing by even more as Sevilla laid siege to his goal.

As for defenders, Sergio was a rock at the back for Real Zaragoza, alongside Gabi Milito, as was Diogo on the right-hand side of the Arag?ese team's back line. Iv? Helguera was also unlucky not have made it into the team after showing his passion when scoring his first goal for Real Madrid since May 2005.

In the midfield, Juan Rom? Riquelme pulled the strings for Villarreal in their win at Real Sociedad, Francisco Casquero stood out as Getafe overcame Deportivo and Angelos Basinas was a key player for Mallorca at Betis.

Fr??ic Kanout?/b] may not have scored for Sevilla, but the Malian striker was a constant thorn in Celta's side and was instrumental in the visitors enjoying sustained spells of possession in and around the area. Sergio Pach? was also a constant menace up front for Getafe and was a creative force throughout.

Capello: Real Madrid needed to punish Cassano
tribalfooball.com - November 01, 2006

Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello has broken his silence over Antonio Cassano's banishment from his first team squad.

"It is never nice to take this kind of decision, but the case is now closed and Cassano is training separately from the rest of the group," explained the Coach, whose men are preparing in view of Wednesday's Champions League tie with Steaua Bucharest.

"I don't think this episode will influence the performance of the team, instead I believe these things can strengthen the squad and unite it even more.

"I took no pleasure in punishing the player as when you are forced to do something like that it is a defeat for everyone."

Real Madrid sporting director Predrag Mijatovic confirmed that Cassano's suspension was not an easy decision to take, although it was inevitable.

"It is sad to be forced to punish someone, but we needed to do something. We are the largest club in the world and discipline is essential," explained the former Fiorentina man.

"Players have to abide by the rules and Cassano's offence was serious enough that we needed to take a decision.

"Players know well enough that they owe the manager and everybody else respect."
