Hammers to launch SWP bid
West Ham United owner Eggert Magnusson has revealed he will launch a bid to sign Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips in the January transfer window.
The England international has failed to impose himself at Stamford Bridge since making a ?21 million move from Manchester City in 2005, and looks for a move away from the club.
Atletico Madrid were strongly linked with a loan move for the player after striker Fernando Torres spoke in glowing terms about him, though Magnusson is keen to bring Wright-Phillips to Upton Park in January.
"It is no secret that we are interested in him and I will try to contact Chelsea sooner rather than later to discuss that possibility," Magnusson told Sky Sports News.
The Hammers have been linked with a host of players since Magnusson's takeover was completed in November, including former England captain David Beckham, but Magnusson insists the final decision on signings must come from manager Alan Pardew.
"David Beckham is a great football player, I have only high respect for him, but as I say, Alan Pardew has to tell me that he wants this or that player and I have to try and get it for him," Magnusson added.
The 59-year-old would not be drawn on how much the club would be willing to shell out on players, explaining: "I cannot tell you any figures because I don't know yet which players Alan wants. One, two or three players?"
"We take it one day at a time, we want an improvement slowly, by saying that, I want us to achieve this in a certain timeframe, but that will take time," he continued.
"What I want to see happening here in the very near future is West Ham will be every year challenging for the top honours in English football and competing for a place in the UEFA Champions League every year."
