Vialli Too Expensive For Juventus?

Reports coming out of Turin suggest that Gianluca Vialli's wage demands were the reason he was not picked as the new Juventus coach.

There have been reports that Vialli was leading the race to take over at Juve, with many among the board preferring him to Ranieri.

Talks were in their final stages, but he was unable to agree on his pay-cheque.
The former Chelsea and Watford boss supposedly wanted a 2 million euro basic salary, going up to 3 million based on objectives.
Ranieri, meanwhile, has supposedly agreed to an annual contract worth just 900,000 euros, which could go up to 1.5 million if the team qualify for the Champions League, and 2 million in the event of winning the Scudetto.
Vialli spent four years at Juventus from 1992 to 96, scoring 38 goals in 105 appearances.
As a coach he led Chelsea to third place in 1998-99, finishing just four points behind Manchester United, and then to the quarter-finals of the Champions League the following season.
He also won the Cup Winners' Cup, League Cup, FA Cup and the European Super Cup (beating Real Madrid) during his spell at Stamford Bridge, with a team a lot more modest than the current one.

Ranieri Explains Juventus Decision

New Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri spoke at length about his decision to join the Old Lady.

The former Chelsea man revealed that he was thinking about a move to Manchester City, but the slow movement on the takeover front put doubts in his mind.
Then, when the Turin giants came calling, it was only going to go one way!
"When Juventus come calling, there is very little to think about," he told the press this evening.
"There was a project that I could start from the beginning at Manchester City, but they haven抰 even been bought by the supposed new owner, and time was passing by.
"Negotiations with Juve came about suddently and surprisingly. I didn抰 expect it.

"Of course, I had seen my name linked in the newspapers, and wondered whether it was true. to receive that first call was very pleasing.

"You simply can抰 say no to a club like Juventus. I didn抰!"
Speaking about guiding Juventus back to the top in Serie A, he said: "It抯 a great challenge, tough but exciting. We need to all work hard and get back to the place where Juventus ought to be.

"I thank Juventus for choosing me. It fills me with pride. This is a very ambitious project, and I am very positive that we will do well.

"The club have told me they want to be back at the very top in five years. We will look to make that happen much sooner."

Finally, on his plans for the team, he said: "The squad will be a mix of champions and youngsters with great potential. Our transfer targets? We certainly won抰 be giving any names to the media.

"The fans should stay calm, as we will make them proud of what Juventus will do in the future.
"We will always be compared to the old Juventus, but they don抰 exist anymore. Nostalgia will always be there, but we are focused on the present and the future."

Ranieri's First Important Transfer: Almiron?

The newly appointed Juventus coach has given the go ahead for the purchase of Empoli's midfielder, who has impressed so much in Serie A in the past two seasons.

Claudio Ranieri is already planning the Bianconeri's transfer market and long-term target Almiron seems now just a step away from joining the Old Lady for next season.

The Argentinean player has caught the eye of various big clubs across Italy and Europe following two excellent seasons with Empoli, and the Tuscan club is prepared to let him go for an adequate sum, in order to use the money to buy new players and bolster the side ahead of next year's Uefa Cup competition apart from Serie A.

The move is expected to materialize in the coming days, thus officially becoming the first purchase of the Bianconeri under Ranieri's reign, with many more expected to arrive to send Juve back into the top positions of the Italian topflight.

Almiron is also followed by Inter and Palermo, therefore Juventus will need to act fast in order to secure the services of the Argentinean midfielder who joined Empoli from Udinese.

Jonathan Zebina has committed his future to the Old Lady, officially signing a contract extension.

The reconstruction ahead of next season has begun in ernest at the Delle Alpi, with French defender Jonathan Zebina signing a two year extension to the contract which was set to run out in 2009.

Juve and Porto trail Rossi

European giants Juventus and FC Porto are vying to land Manchester United striker Giuseppe Rossi on loan for next season.

The 20-year-old spent most of last season on loan, first at Newcastle where he struggled, and then at Parma.

In Serie A the American-born Italian starlet was in excellent goal-scoring form and netted nine times in 19 appearances for the Gialloblu.

Many believe that then Parma boss Claudio Ranieri managed to get the best out of Rossi.

The Bianconeri has since appointed Ranieri as their new coach and he is reportedly keen to bring the youngster to Turin.

However, since Premiership champions United completed the signing of Porto's Andersen, the Portuguese club may be given preference on taking Rossi on loan.

Furthermore, Sir Alex Ferguson might want the Italian to remain at Old Trafford if he cannot bolster his squad with a new striker in the transfer window.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Louis Saha's perennial injury problems could also influence the Scot's decision on Rossi.

Ranieri Discusses Transfer Subjects

Newly appointed Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri analyses the club抯 current transfer plans.

"First of all, I want a powerful group," began Ranieri, speaking to Tuttosport.

"All we have to focus on now is creating a group capable of being a threat to any other club.

"Our priority right now is to sign a forceful midfielder who can keep the midfield department together."

"Fans will be satisfied," he assured, while refusing to reveal names. "We are working hard towards creating a strong team. However, we can抰 keep mentioning names in newspapers."

He did let a few names slip, though, one of them being that of Liverpool midfielder Momo Sissoko.

"I know Sissoko very well," he said. "I coached him during my days at Valencia, and I was quite surprised when he moved to Liverpool."

He was more careful on Gilardino: "Well, I don抰 like to discuss players who belong to other clubs.

"Right now, I can say that Iaquinta is a nice purchase. He抯 a World Champion and he抣l be very motivated at Juventus. Tactically, he can be very useful."

The discussion finally shifted to David Trezeguet, and Ranieri made no secret of the contractual issues: "There aren抰 many strikers who have characteristics similar to Trezeguet's.

"If he stays I would certainly play him, but the contract extension issue is between him and the club抯 management."
