'Strange' creature was a marmoset
JOHOR BARU: The cat-monkey like animal found by a teacher at SK Seri Alam 2 here has been identified as a marmoset.
The animal which died on Sunday morning was a primate found mostly in South Ame-rican countries, said Johor Wildlife Depart-ment director Abdul Razak Majid.
“It is not a local species and it is very strange that such an animal was found here,” he said yesterday.
“We are not ruling out the possibility that the animal had been smuggled into Malaysia.
“The animal classified as a ‘new world’ monkey is usually found in Brazil and other Latin American countries,” he said.
He said officers had been directed to track down those responsible for bringing the animal into the country.
“We believe a local had kept the animal captive illegally,” he said.
The marmoset has been classified as an endangered species, according to Malaysian Nature Society Johor branch adviser Vincent Chow.
He said the culprits responsible for smuggling the animal should be penalised.
“The smuggling of animals especially endangered species must be stopped,” he said.
On Monday, a local daily reported that a teacher at the school had found an animal with a cat’s body and a monkey’s face behind the canteen.
The ‘strange’ animal was injured after being bitten by several dogs. The teacher then treated the animal and took care of it.
The discovery led to widespread speculation over the ‘special’ animal. |
