Wartawan dikejar warga asing
WARTAWAN SINAR HARIAN
22 September 2013

Illegal taxis from Pontianak bleed them dry
by Marilyn Ten, [email protected]. Posted on September 20, 2013, Friday
ACTION MUST BE TAKEN: Chiew (right) speaks at the press conference. At centre is Lau and at left is Ashfar.
KUCHING: The presence of illegal taxis (kereta sapu) from Pontianak, Indonesia here is becoming a real menace to express bus companies in the state.
This was revealed by vice-chairman of Sarawak Bus Transport Companies Association (SBTCA) Nelson Chiew who in expressing his concern claimed that no action had been taken by the local enforcement authorities on the matter despite being informed by the association.
“We are facing a very serious problem from illegal taxis from Pontianak, some of which are not even checked by our local enforcement authorities even though we have brought up the issue to them on many occasions. Nothing much has been done and we sincerely hope that the authorities concerned will take action so that bus companies in Sarawak can survive,” he told a press conference prior to the 375th Pan Malaysian Bus Operators Association (PMBOA) council meeting here yesterday.
SBTCA chairman Lau Khing Seng was also present.
With a one-way trip from Kuching to Pontianak using express bus costing RM60 presently, Chiew said passengers were opting to take the illegal taxis due to cheaper fares.
“These illegal taxis are affecting more than 20 per cent of our business, causing financial problems to all bus operators in Sarawak including stage coach operators,” he said.
According to him, many bus companies in the state had gone out of business with Kuching and Sibu currently left with only two and three stage coach companies respectively.
“Three stage bus companies in Kuching have closed down and one each from Mukah and Lawas.
“If this persists and no action is taken by the relevant authorities on the illegal taxis, bus companies in Sarawak are going to experience a very difficult situation. They may have to increase fares to survive.”
Meanwhile, PMBOA president Datuk Mohamad Ashfar Ali, said that passengers could endanger themselves by taking illegal taxis which were not regularly inspected by the relevant authorities such as Puspakom.
“The passengers are not covered by any insurance. If there is an accident they (passengers) lose everything.
“If you use a private car for hire it is a breach of the insurance policy and no one is going to pay for any damage or death. At the end of the day, everybody is going to suffer and the authority concerned should be aware of this.”

Kuala Lumpur: “Ini negara Malaysia, bukan negara asing.
