West Ham United 3-1 Newcastle United
West Ham United's David di Michele hit a brace to help see off Newcastle United 3-1 at Upton Park.

It was the perfect start for Gianfranco Zola who began his reign as West Ham manager in style.

The former Chelsea star officially took up his duties on Monday - and the Hammers responded to record a third home successive win.

Di Michele, on a season loan from Torino, set them on their way with a deflected effort after just eight minutes and then added another before half-time.

Matthew Etherington made it 3-0 before England striker Michael Owen salvaged a consolation for the visitors.

Sort this Toon mess out, Ashley

MICHAEL OWEN has told Newcastle owner Mike Ashley: Sort out the mess — now!

The Toon striker wants Kevin Keegan’s successor appointed urgently to stop the rot.

Newcastle, 19th in the Premier League, host rock-bottom Tottenham in the Carling Cup tonight, with their lowest crowd for almost 17 years expected — just 20,000.

Owen said: “The sooner we get out of this situation the better, so we can concentrate again on football.

"There is lots of speculation and it unsettles fans and players alike.

“I think you always respond best when you’ve a manager in place, a focal point you answer to, perform for and try to impress. We’ve not got that at the minute.

“Even our caretaker manager Chris Hughton, who has done a fantastic job and steadied the ship, says the sooner we can get it sorted the better.

“Everyone knows that, the owner knows that and I’m sure he’s working as hard as he can to bring some stability to the club.

“It’s not just the managerial thing, it’s everything surrounding it — who the owner is going to be, whether Mike Ashley is going to continue or sell to someone else, whether he’s going to appoint a manager before that happens or after. Nobody knows.

“What we do know is it would be nice to have a stable ship, as we did at the start of the campaign when we were all really excited about this season.

“We all liked Kevin Keegan and were sad to see him go. But we have to snap out of the doom and gloom to try to get some confidence and results.

“You almost become immune to these happenings in football nowadays. I had three managers in the space of a few months at Real Madrid.

“It’s unfortunate but that’s the way it goes.”

Owen called on the fans to throw their support behind the team whatever their feelings towards the men at the top.

He declared: “It is always important to have them backing you and it will be great if they are behind us against Spurs. It’s difficult but we are all in this together.”

Owen’s worries may be solved if the Nigerian consortium pledging to bid for the club can get round the table with Ashley.

As SunSport revealed yesterday, they have promised to bring back Keegan and provide him with £75m for new players. undefined

Premier League - Martins brace lifts Newcastle

Obafemi Martins scored the goals as Newcastle lifted themselves out of the relegation zone with a 2-0 home victory over high-flying Aston Villa.

Martins scored two second-half goals as Newcastle became the third side in as many days to win from the bottom of the Premier League table, following the achievements of Tottenham and Bolton.

Aston Villa had much the better of the first half but could not get going after the break as they missed the opportunity to break into the top three.

Villa certainly had the two best chances of a first half that started brightly but became scrappy and full of stoppages as it went on.

By the time Newcastle's best moment came when centre-back Steven Taylor was just inches away from turning home an inviting cross from the right from Habib Beye four minutes before the break, Villa had already hit the post and spurned two fine chances.

First, Villa defender Martin Laursen flicked the outside of the post with a towering header from a corner to come within inches of his fifth goal of the campaign, before an unmarked Gabby Agbonlahor completely mis-cued eight yards out after James Milner rolled the ball across to him.

Ashley Young then brought a 35th-minute save out of Shay Given - making his 450th appearances for the club - when he beat his man and earned some space 10 yards out with a body swerve before driving straight at the face of the Toon keeper.

Villa - out after the break a good couple of minutes earlier than the home side - began the second half like a side desperate to break the deadlock, but it was Newcastle who brought the match to life.

Joey Barton, lucky to escape a first-half booking when he petulantly flicked out a hand into the face of Agbonlahor in an off-the-ball incident, was shown a yellow card for a studs-up challenge in midfield as the game threatened to boil over.

And just before the hour, the home side had the lead when Martins held up Barton's pass on the edge of the box and, afforded some space to turn by Laursen, moved the ball onto his left foot before firing a low shot inside the near post from 20 yards, just out of the reach of diving Villa keeper Brad Freidel.

The goal gave the home side and their fans the confidence and belief to push for a game-clinching second, which almost came just seven minutes later when Nicky Butt's 25-yard free-kick beat Freidel but crashed against the post.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill used the break in play to replace Nicky Shorey with midfielder Steve Sidwell, moving Nigel Reo-Coker to makeshift right-back - but the move backfired with eight minutes remaining.

Jonas Gutiérrez surged into the box from the left wing, easily rounding Reo-Coker in the process, before firing the ball across the face of goal for Martins to thump it into the net from a yard out and secure a hugely-important victory for his side.
