US still needs Malaysia, PM says after Trump wins presidency Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak sought to allay concerns over Malaysia’s partnership with the US after Donald Trump was elected the world super power’s next president in a narrow contest. Najib said that while the Republican maverick’s victory was “unexpected”, the new American leader would not likely jeopardise bilateral relations as it still needed Malaysia’s co-operation. “Donald Trump’s victory was unexpected by many. He has shown that what is needed by the American voters is a president who would galvanise the economy and would ready jobs that ensures returns or which are more rewarding or high-paying jobs. “I think the partnership with the US would remain because he too needs the partnership with Malaysia and other countries and I believe he would use methods which can help in the co-operation with all nations,” he told a news conference after officiating at an entrepreneurial programme at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here. Najib also reiterated his congratulatory message to Trump. “I myself know him personally. He is no stranger to me,” he said. In a statement immediately after Trump was declared the winner in the US presidential race against Democrat Hillary Clinton, Najib offered his congratulations to the 70-year-old whom he pointed out was seen as an “outsider” when his candidacy was first announced. He added that Trump’s triumph serves as a reminder to all politicians to never take voters for granted. Najib said that Trump's appeal to Americans who want to see their government more focused on their interests and welfare, and less embroiled in foreign interventions that have proven to run counter to US interests — have resulted in his win.
