Primera Liga Team Of The Week (Round 11)
Goalkeeper
1. Pinto (Celta Vigo): Last season's leading goal-keeper made a string of fine saves as Celta pipped Deportivo at the Riazor to claim Galician honours.
Defenders (right to left)
2. Beto (Recreativo): A no-nonsense display against Milosevic and Valdo as Recreativo went (joint) sixth with a very imprssive with against Osasuna.
3. Za Castro (Atletico Madrid): A composed display against Levante to help Atleti keep a clean sheet. Such was his understanding with Perea, that one wondered if Aguirre would ever miss a certain Spanish international called Pablo.
4. Quique Alvarez (Villarreal): The skipper led his side by example as they defended tight to survive Getafe's charge and hang on for a vital win.
Midfielders (right to left)
5. Daniel Alves (Sevilla): The adventurous right-back stamped his authority on the game early, and once David Silva was sent off, there was absolutely no stopping him as he ran Valencia ragged.
6. Emerson (Real Madrid): Rolled back the years to turn in a wonderfully balanced midfield display. Important headers, well-timed tackles, pin-point passes to set up the attack, the Brazilian unfurled it all!
7. Diarra (Real Madrid): Emerson's form rubbed off on his midfield deputy, as the Mali international painted a picture of unusual calm in defense, while making his contribution up front - first helping set up Reyes, and then grabbing a goal for himself.
8. Maniche (Atletico Madrid): Nothing less than an absolute dynamite. Every time the Levante defenders tried to close down Torres, Galletti or Aguero, he hurt them with his bursts through the middle. A superb brace to fire Atleti up into fifth place!
9. Adriano Correia (Sevilla): The promising youngster has been switched to the right to replace the injured Jesus Navas, and after a tough outing last week, came up trumps against a Valencia side that never really had any answers.
Forwards
10. Aimar (Zaragoza): With D'Alessandro missing, all the creative onus was on him, and the Argentine did not disappoint, chipping in with goals and assists as Zaragoza read Nastic a riot act.
11. Gudjohnsen (Barcelona): Answered Barcelona's call just when they needed him most, with a calm and clinical brace that will have sent a wave of reassurance rippling through the worried fans. |

Primera Liga Weekend Preview: The Last Che Chance?
Real Madrid's visit to the Mestalla offers faltering Valencia a final chance to get back into the title race. Elsewhere, Barcelona host Villarreal, while Celta Vigo are set for a classic against the in form Zaragoza.
Barcelona and Villarreal kick off the weekend's action at the Nou Camp in a game which has rarely failed to entertain since Riquelme's move to El Madrigal. The Argentine was loaned out following Ronaldinho's arrival, but found purpose and motivation thanks to an adoring crowd.
They have since written new chapters in their history and this was supposed tobe another season onwards and upwards. However, crucial injuries and Riquelme's poor form have meant that they now risk taking a step backwards following two miraculous seasons.
With their talisman in Argentina to attend the birth of his third son, and Nihat the latest to succumb to a long term injury, they will need some serious imagination from the others if they are to ruffle some feathers at the Nou Camp, where Barcelona have won five times and drawn twice so far.
Saturday's other game sees Atletico Madrid host embattled Real Sociedad in what does look like a very one-sided contest on paper. Atleti are beginning to look like they have absorbed their long term injuries, and are ready to burst into the top four with a win.
Meanwhile, Real Sociedad's troubles continue despite the arrival of Lotina to the bench - aey are firmly rooted to the bottom - and recent form suggests things are unlikely to change this weekend, particularly in the hostile environs of the Vicente Calderon.
Sunday brings with it the biggest game of the weekend - Real Madrid taking on Valencia at the Mestalla. With Los Che languishing eight points off the lead following a very lean month, a defeat on Sunday practically rules them out of any title challenge.
Not that Real Madrid can drop any points. Barcelona continue to lead the title race, and Los Merengues can ill-afford to let the three point gap increase even before the Catalans strike form.
David Villa's injury poses a major problem for Valencia, and they will now be looking upon Fernando Morientes to come up with something special against his former team, as he has famously in the past.
On the side of that titanic tussle, we have a very interesting game in Vigo, where Celta host an up and coming Zaragoza. The Galicians have only recently humbled Real Madrid and Deportivo away from home to signal their intent, and will pose some serious questions for a Zaragoza side looking to cling on to their place in the top four.
With the likes of Aimar, D'Alessandro, Ewerthon, Sergio, Garcia, Celades, Gabriel Milito and Cesar in their ranks, the visitors certainly are stronger on paper. But then again, Oubina, Cannobio, Nene and Baiano are no mugs, and last season's best defense is beginning to find its feet as well. Both sides want at least a top six finish, so it's a battle between direct rivals as well.
Yet another exciting battle takes place in Pampalona, where misfiring Osasuna host the young and energetic Deportivo. Both sides lost last weekend, and while Deportivo's to local rivals Celta will have hurt more, Osasuna's defeat to Recreativo Huelva left them in the bottom three. They must now dig themselves out of the hole, starting on Sunday at the Reyno de Navarra.
Second placed Sevilla travel to fourth from bottom Athletic Bilbao, looking to make the most of the Basques' problems in what would otherwise have been an almost impossible game to win at San Mames.
Bernd Schuster will meet his former charges as Getafe host Levante, in what will also be a return to Madrid for former Real man Lopez Caro. Getafe dropped out of the top six following last week's loss to Villarreal, but could well make a quick return given their impressive home form.
In the remaining games of the week, Racing Santander host an upwardly mobile Recreativo, Javier Irureta's embattled Betis welcome Ernesto Valverde's similarly troubled Espanyol, and Mallorca visit Nastic. |

Primera Liga Team Of The Week: Round 12
Goalkeeper
Andr? Palop (Sevilla): After scoring two early goals, the Andalucians came under intense pressure from Athletic Bilbao and have their keeper to thank for ensuring that the Basque Country side did not make a dramatic comeback. His save from Ismael Urzaiz in the first half when he palmed away a point-blank header was enough to earn him a place in his week's team.
Defenders
Josetxo (Osasuna): While the forwards grabbed all the headlines for helping the Pamplona-based side chalk up a memorable victory against Depor, Josetxo was a rock at the back as he marshalled the back four. After Depor had scored to reduce the deficit before the break, Osasuna could have crumbled, given their recent form, but the 29-year-old made several crucial intervnetions to prevent that.
Ezequiel Garay (Racing Santander): After scoring a wonderful free-kick last weekend, the Argentinian central defender slotted home a penalty this time as Racing won a thriller against Recreativo. It is not just his goalscoring exploits that have seen him make the starting XI, but also the fact that he instigated several attacks from the back and was powerful on the floor and in the air.
Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid): While Fabio Capello's team may have received some adverse reactions to their performance against Valencia, the fact that they hung on to win without being spectacular is due, in large part, to the the organisation of the team as a unit. No single player personified Madrid's desire to carve out a victory in orer to garner three points more so that Ramos.
Midfielders
Andr? Iniesta (FC Barcelona): The unsung hero in the Blaugrana side would have won far more headlines for his well-taken goal had a certain Brazilain magician not gazumped him later in the match. Iniesta takes his place in the team for his third gol in as many games as well as showing his full range of passing skills and vision as Bar? returned to the level that saw them win the league last season.
Jon? (Mallorca): Few Mallorca players ever make team of the week, but the performance of the Argentinian-born 23-year-old in the Balearic Islanderss victory at N?tic meant that he was a shoe-in. His movement and attackign instincts shone out as Gregorio Manzano's team never gave up and snatched all three points after twice giving away the lead.
Gonzalo Colsa (Racing Santander): After a poor start to the campaign the Cantabrians are finding their feet and are not only entertaining, but are also learning how to earn results. Colsa returned to his former club in the summer and is becoming an inspiration in midfield with his passing game allied to a willingness to battle back and win the ball. Chipped in with a tremendous goal to boot.
Ronaldinho (FC Barcelona): Due to the number of strikers performing well, the Blaugrana ace is part of an attacking midfield this week. His wonder-goal against Villarreal won him space on the front page of every newspaper, but Ronaldinho showed throughout that he is returning to his best as he was at the centre of almost everything going forward. Truly world class.
Forwards
Nikola Zigic (Racing Santander): The giants Serbian striker has become a hero at El Sardinero and it is not hard to see why. Despite being 2.02 metres tall, he is not only good in the air. After nodding Racing into the lead, he showed that he is adept at holding the ball up as well as taking on players and was a constant menace throughout and capped a fine display by slotting home what proved to be the winning goal.
Diego Milito (Real Zaragoza): After giving his side an early lead the Argentinian caused Celta numerous problems and was unlucky not to have scored one, if not two, more to secure victory for Arag?ese outfit. Having already scored nine goals this term, Diego Milito proved once again why he is battling to be the top scorer in the league, but also stood out for his willingness to drop back and defend.
Roberto Soldado (Osasuna): The former Real Madrid striker gave a glimpse of the potential that he has against Deportivo as he scored two superb goals to help his side to a morale-boosting win. Depor coach Joaqu? Caparr? said afterwards that Osasuna scored goals that were out-of-the-ordinary and he was right as Soldado's brace proved.
On The Bench
As always, the competition for places in the side was immense and ti was a difficult task naming a side from the host of players that had outstanding performances at the weekend.
Unlucky not to be named in goal, were Real Madrid's Iker Casillas, who was a key reason why his side celebrated a close victory against a Valencia side that created enough chances to win the game by several goals, and Jos? Manuel Pinto, who once again was outstanding as Celta held on against a strong Zaragoza side to earn a point.
In defence Mallorca's Sergio Ballesteros was in fine form against N?tic, while Lionel Scaloni looked to be returning to his best for Racing as he helped out going forward as well as tackling back. Carlos Diogo also looked dangerous marauding up and down the right flank for Zaragoza and C?ar Cruchaga just lost out to team-mate Josetxo as the pair stood firm against Depor.
Juan Arango may have only played for nine minutes, but his free-kick to win the game for Mallorca means that he is well worth a place on the bench in midfield. Ivan De la Pe?'s second-half display against Betis meant that Espanyol thoroughly deserved a point from their game, while Daniel Alves stood out for Sevilla, David Silva put in another strong display for Valencia, while Javad Nekounam was outstanding for Osasuna as the Iranian international showed that he is adapting to Spanish football.
Going forward, Osasuna's Valdo scored a great goal and was a real threat to Depor along with his team-mate Savo Milosevic, who marked a good individual showing by scoring from distance towards the end of the game. Luis Fabiano never gave up against Athletic and his cool run and finish so late in the game against Athletic took him close to a place in the Team of the Week. Also well worth a mention is Real Madrid's match-winner Raulwhose clinical finish earned his team three valuable points. |
