Lahm set for Bayern exit

Contract talks break down with Germany international                                                                         By Lewis Rutledge   Last updated: 22nd April 2008

Bayern Munich have withdrawn the offer of a contract extension for Philipp Lahm.

The German defender opened talks with general manager UliHoeness earlier this month and stated that he was willing to remainwith the club.

However, Lahm, who has one season remaining on his current dealat the Allianz Arena, has not been able to come to an agreement withhis club bosses.

"Talks between Bayern and Philipp Lahm over the extension of hiscontract which expires on June 30, 2009 have been inconclusive," theclub said.

"As a result, Bayern have withdrawn the offer of a contract extension."

Progression

Lahm has now admitted that he could leave Bayern and set out for a new challenge in a different country.

"I've played for two years with Stuttgart, I'm finishing mythird year at Bayern, the top German club, so the logical progressionis to go abroad," he told Stern.

Lahm added that one of the reasons for his decision was that he doubted Bayern could win the UEFA Champions League in 2009.

"There are in Europe a handful of clubs who have a financial power superior to that of Bayern," he explained.

"Their teams play with more rhythm and assurance than Bayern."

24/04/2008 03:08                Rib閞y: We Will Miss Toni

BayernM黱chen winger Franck Rib閞y is disappointed that Luca Toni will missout on Thursday's UEFA Cup clash with Zenit St. Petersburg, but addsthat the German side have cover available...

The Italian forwardwas the saviour during Bayern's victory over Getafe in thequarter-finals, netting twice in extra time to take the Germans to thesemis.

Rib閞y managed the first strike before that, though, and thus ruesthe fact that he and Toni won't be able to comprise a double-act oncemore in Russia.

He told Sporting Life, "It is always frustrating to lose the topscorer - a big member of the team - because it is a game we need towin."

However, he added that there are two other top-class forwards waiting inthe wings. "We have two players who will want to replace him with LukasPodolski and Miroslav Klose and they will want to score goals too," herevealed.

Rib閞y, formerly of Marseille, has previous experience againstZenit, the St. Petersburg side having knocked Marseille out of thiscompetition back in 2006.

"I think they are a good team and have always gone a long way in the UEFA Cup," he warned.
"They have knocked out two big teams in the competition already this season and it should be a good test for us.

"I think they have developed a lot and are stronger than the team I met with Marseille." Franck has scored twice in nine UEFA Cup appearances so far this season.

Bayern faces Russian test in UEFA Cup semis

LONDON (AP) -- Bayern Munich hasn't found the UEFA Cup an easy competition -- and now it faces a semifinal without its key striker.
The German league leader hosts Zenit St. Petersburg in the first leg of the semifinals on Thursday after reaching the quarterfinals on away goals.
Rangers hosts Fiorentina in the other semifinal, in a rematch of the first European Cup Winners' Cup. Fiorentina won that 4-1 on aggregate after a two-leg final in 1961.
British bookmakers William Hill ranks Bayern as the favorite to win the competition at 11-10, followed by Fiorentina at 9-4, Rangers at 9-2 and Zenit at 11-2.
Bayern has been a favorite from the start, but hasn't found its first foray into the UEFA Cup after a 10-season absence a breeze -- getting draws with Braga and Bolton and needing a late goal to beat Red Star Belgrade in the group stage.
Now it faces Zenit, which eliminated Bayern's Bundesliga rival Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 on aggregate in the quarterfinals, without the UEFA Cup's leading scorer.
Luca Toni will be watching the match, serving a one-match suspension for accumulating five yellow cards. Toni has scored twice in each of Bayern's last four games, including a pair in the last five minutes of extra time against Getafe to put Bayern in the semifinals of the UEFA Cup, and two more on Saturday to guide Bayern to a 2-1 German Cup victory over Borussia Dortmund.
"I know I will be the biggest fan in the stadium," Toni said. "We know the game will be a real fight."
Toni has 10 goals in the UEFA Cup, and 35 in 41 games in all competitions.
Adding to Bayern's problems is midfielder Mark van Bommel, who fractured his nose during the win over Dortmund. While he completed the game, he's doubtful for St. Petersburg.
Van Bommel, Philipp Lahm and Lukas Podolski also are all within a yellow car of a suspension.
Bayern is keen to add another UEFA Cup title to the one it won in 1996, alongside its four European Cups.
Bayern has a 10-point lead in the Bundesliga and could clinch the league this weekend, which could be the second jewel in a three-title season to send goalkeeper Oliver Kahn into retirement and give manager Ottmar Hitzfeld a going away present as he leaves to become Switzerland coach next season.
Kahn is the only member of the Bayern squad who was at the club in 1996.
"If Ottmar Hitzfeld can perfect the treble in the UEFA Cup, then that is the ideal farewell gift," Bayern president Franz Beckenbauer said.
Zenit is the only team in the final four without a major European title and has played the most games to reach the semifinals, having entered the competition at the second qualifying round.
Coached by Dutchman Guus Hiddink, the Russian champion is confident they can repeat the home performance from the quarterfinals when it beat Leverkusen 4-1.
It was the first time the club had beaten German opposition.
Zenit again will rely on striker Pavel Pogrebnyak, who has eight goals in the tournament and is behind only Toni. Defender Aleksandr Anyukov, a Russian international, could miss the game with a broken toe, as could center back Anatoly Timoshchuk.
Roman Shirokov and Fernando Ricksen could play in their absence.
Zenit hasn't won in its last four Russian league matches and has only seven points from its last six games, 11 points behind leader Rubin Kazan.
"The mass media consider Zenit an outsider in our semifinal, but I do not care," Zenit striker Andrei Arshavin said. "If God is with us, and we play with enthusiasm and spirit, we'll have a chance."
Rangers is aiming for a quadruple of trophies.
The Gers won the Scottish League Cup on penalty kicks on March 16, are leading the league by two points with three games in hand, and reached the final of the Scottish Cup after eliminating St. Johnstone on penalty kicks on Sunday.
However Rangers will be without midfielder Lee McCulloch and goalkeeper Allan McGregor because of ankle injuries and captain Barry Ferguson and midfielder Kevin Thomson due to suspension.
Fiorentina is fighting on two fronts. It is fourth in the Serie A and trying to hold off AC Milan and Sampdoria for a spot in next season's European Champions League.
Fiorentina defender Tomas Ujfalusi is out with a thigh problem and Per Kroldrup or Dario Dainelli are the likely replacements. Alessandro Gamberini is the other central defender, with Massimo Gobbi and Martin Jorgensen on the flanks.
With Marco Donadel suspended in midfield, Zdravko Kuzmanovic, Fabio Liverani and Riccardo Montolivo should get the start.
Adrian Mutu, who leads Fiorentina with six goals in Europe this season, should be joined by Mario Santana and Giampaolo Pazzini in attack.
Fiorentina's only major international trophy came against Rangers back in 1961.
The second legs are set for May 1, with the final at the City of Manchester Stadium in northern England on May 14.

UEFA Cup - Lucio hands Zenit initiative  Eurosport -  Thu, 24 Apr 23:37:00 2008

Lucio'ssecond-half own goal allowed Russian champions Zenit St Petersburg tohold Bayern Munich to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Cupsemi-final at the Allianz Arena.

The Bundesliga leaders led through Franck Ribery's 18th-minute goal but, sorely missing suspended striker Luca Toni, they wasted chances galore.

Brazil defender Lucio deflected a cross from Viktor Fayzulin past Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahnfor the shock equaliser on the hour that silenced the sell-out crowd of66,000 at the Allianz Arena on a chilly evening in Munich. Riberyhad first fluffed a penalty when his weak shot was blocked by Zenitgoalkeeper Vyacheslav Malafeev but the France playmaker made amends byfiring the rebound into the corner.

The return leg will be played in St Petersburg on May 1, with Zenit looking to make the most of their away goal. The winners will play either Rangers or Fiorentina in the final in Manchester on May 14. "It's going to be difficult but it's still possible," said Bayern striker Lukas Podolski.

"We've got nothing to fear because we're the better team. We played well but were unfortunate to give up a stupid late goal."
Bayerncoach Ottmar Hitzfeld told German TV: "We played well at high tempo inthe first half. The own-goal was unfortunate but it happens. We'vestill got a good chance.

"We're always able to score a goal or two away and besides that we've got Luca Toni back in the line-up." Toni is the UEFA Cup's top scorer this season with 10 goals. Bayern, fresh from winning the German Cup on Saturday and hoping to clinchtheir 21st German championship on Sunday, took control from the openingwhistle.

Toni, who has scored 35 goals in 41 matches thisseason, watched from the sidelines after being booked in a two-goaleffort in the 3-3 quarter-final draw at Spanish side Getafe. Germany strikers Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose, along with Bastian Schweinsteiger, managed to create plenty of chances, especially in the first half.

But their poor finishing and later superb goalkeeping by Malafeev cost them. Zenitare struggling at the start of the new Russian season, lying 10th inthe league with one win and seven points from six matches.
