UDAY CHOPRA OPTIMISTIC ABOUT HIS ACTING

There's something about Uday Chopra that's quite appealing. It is his sincerity to work. However, his biggest disadvantage is that he is son of a top filmmaker. So the film industry is not ready to accept him as an actor. He recently signed another film with Jimmy Shergill. This will be his third film with Jimmy after 'Mohabbatein' and 'Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai'. But for the moment, junior Chopra is gearing up for his next release 'Supari'.

Did you enjoy as a guest 'Mujhse Dosti Karoge'?

I'm very pleased with my guest appearance in 'MDK'. In fact, the response and appreciation I got, has given me immense confidence. I don't know why the people thought I was out-of-place.

Weren't you supposed to do a film with Rinke for Sangeeth Sivan?

Yes, but I was unable to do that film as the dates of 'Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai' were clashing. However, there are no hard feelings between Sangeeth and me. We have agreed to work together in future.

What held 'Supari' back?

For one, it's a small budget film. Second, when we started making this film there was a definite market for such films. However, now the industry is passing through a slump. 'Supari' is the most affected film. The film also took a lot of time. Everything is settled now and the film should release in June, hopefully.

What took you to this project?

Wow! We'll leave that for the audience and the critics. As far as the role is concerned, I believe it's something that no one expected from me. It is a real and intense role. I play Aryan, a middle-class Mumbai collegian that dreams of making it big. But like most collegians, Aryan wants everything instantly. It's based on the dreams and dilemmas of Aryan and his friends and how they go through the journey with ups and downs. I was happy that Padam Kumar had faith in me, especially because he offered me a role that was in striking contrast to the one I had in 'Mohabbatein'.

Did you learn anything from it?

Irrespective of how the film fares, it has been a tremendous learning experience.

Will your solo lead under home banner be your real acid test?

My home banner will never make a film just for me. They will make a film and if I happen to fit into that role, I will be cast. However, there is a film being planned with me in it and I'm excited. As for the acid test, every film I do ends up being an acid test! So, it will be an acid test! I leave it to the audience.

How do you explain Tusshar and Ritesh garnering more visibility and projects?

Everyone has his own style of working. I have been selective in signing films that excite me. There's nothing wrong with what my contemporaries are doing, but it's just not right for me.

Aren't you more cut out for sweet romantic comedies?

Thanks for the compliment. However, I'd like to believe that I could play any role that I'm given. But I know that every person has a certain kind of persona that is more suitable for a particular role. But I would love to break that and venture into uncharted territory. I will not shy away from playing something against my image. In 'Supari', I am, irrespective of whether I succeed or not.

How did you react to your link-up with Rinke and Shamita?

Fun! I joke about it with them. But I would hope that they stop all the link-up now because Rinke is married.

Any weakness as an actor?

Oh many, but I don't want to enumerate them! If people haven't noticed them why should I bring it to their attention?

If you had a choice, who would you like to be linked up with - Antara Mali, Lakshmi Menon or Katrina Kaif?

You don't expect me to pick a name, do you? They are all lovely ladies and though I know candor would be good but mystery would be better. My love to all of them!

How would you explain the splurge in films made by diaspora filmmakers?

It's a renaissance. The industry is witnessing a period of adjustment. Maybe the multiplex boom has something to do with it or even an awareness of different cultures. I am more of a fan of Hindi mainstream - though the definition of that is also debatable - 'cause no one knows what is mainstream! Of the lot, I saw 'Monsoon Wedding' and loved it. Also enjoyed 'Bend it Like Beckham'.

PREITY ZINTA DATES NESS WADIA

Yes, she survived the recent Colombo blast involving several of her star colleagues, to lead a happy life. She has now got her lovebird in a business tycoon, Ness Wadia. He is the deputy-managing director of the famous business house known as Bombay Dyeing. This business family is very well connected socially and politically.

For the first time Preity Zinta has not denied the media report, and has rather confessed, "I have just started dating." This news puts an end to all past gossips about her relationships with Abhishek Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Dutt and Aamir Khan. She has been telling the media about her no link-up with these guys though she is fully aware that most of these linkups were due to her good equation with them in her films.

But she was amused that her name was linked up with Aamir Khan even though she had not met with him for quite some time, she says. Yes, Preity, you have rightly put an end to all media speculation on your relationships. However, industry circles wonder if the Wadias would also enter the film production like many other business houses and make you turn a producer!

LISA RAY QUITS MODELING; BACK TO FILMS

Lisa Ray's is a versatile personality. She is in modeling, music videos and in big as well as small screen. Now, she is returning to films, and after quitting modeling. There's a reason behind it. She asserts that modeling has undergone a change for the worse. Skin shows and sexy images have taken the place of good looks and talent. Looks are no more relevant. She claims that she succeeded in modeling because of her eyes that spoke more than the words. Today bold has turned beautiful in the world of ad films. Lisa was once known as the 'BPL Oye' girl and later shot to fame by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's music video. She was recently in Delhi for promoting a watch brand for which she is an ambassador.

She announced that she would soon be seen in Deepa Mehta's movie. Strangely, the industry was full of rumors like the one that she had died of an overdose of drugs. Also, it was said that her boyfriend has beaten her blue, and that she has been convalescing in Canada. However, she has put an end to all these false reports by announcing her return to films. This is to recall that the news of Lisa Ray enacting topless scenes in Hollywood had made several Bollywood girls lose their sleep. Earlier, she acted in Daler Mehndi's music video and also as an anchor with Keli Dorji in Star Movies program.

Sallu with Deepal Shaw now

Salman Khan who has been described as the most popular actor among Bollywood actresses, will soon be seen starring with the 'Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar' fame Deepal Shaw in T- Series' next movie. The movie would be worth watching as Shaw might wear a still shorter skirt and Sallu may not wear his shirt at all?

Amitabh, Hrithik together again

Gaurang Doshi is said to have decided to sign Big B and the junior Roshan (Hrithik) in the lead roles in his proposed movie 'Trishul'. The director will be Sriram Raghvan of the 'Ek Haseena Thi' fame. Doshi has a plan to introduce a new experiment in the movie. He is ready to title it again, if needed. Sources close to Hrithik deny the report of his doing any film until he completes his home production, which is likely by October-end.

SHAH RUKH'S ITEM DANCE IN 'KAAL'

Super star Shah Rukh Khan would be soon seen picturizing a dance number on Malaika Arora Khan in producer Karan Johar's studio for the latter's 'Kaal'. Karan wanted to do a movie with SRK and Ajay Devgan together but in vein, as the relations between the two are not so cordial. However, Karan has roped in Shah Rukh Khan to do a dance number in the movie. This dance number will definitely add more glamour to 'Kaal', which already has a galaxy of stars like Ajay Devgan, Vivek Oberoi and John Abraham. This is to recall that Shah Rukh has given dance numbers in the past too.

He did the one in Maniratnam's 'Dil Se' and the other in Boney Kapoor's 'Shakti'. While SRK played hero in 'Dil Se', in 'Shakti' SRK did an item dance with Aishwarya Rai. But her item number in 'Kaal' will be quite different from those in the past inasmuch as his choicest choreographer Farah Khan will direct this number. This film will be worth watching with SRK and Malaika dancing together and Farah Khan directing them, besides Ajay Devgan playing in it. Isn't Kajol anxiously awaiting its earliest release to watch her husband's performance and also her once upon a time partner?

Sridevi opens Kaushik's eatery

Actor-director Satish Kaushik has started a restaurant in New Delhi named Khana Unlimited. Kaushik enjoys both cooking and eating. He got this eatery opened by Bollywood stars -- Sridevi and her producer husband Boney Kapoor. Sridevi was found an enthusiast of cooking and eating too. The cost of food in Kaushik's restaurant is very reasonable Rs.99 for unlimited food! Does he know that a movie costs much more than this? Would he bring down theatre ticket prices too by opening cheaper cinema halls? Boney Kapoor announced that his two movies are ready for early release. They are 'Milenge Milenge' and 'No Entry'.

Mahadevan may not repeat Shaahid

Will Anant Mahadevan repeat Shahid Kapoor in his next movies is a talk of the tinsel town these days? The recently released movie of Mahadevan 'Dil Maange More', starring Shahid Kapoor didn't fare well at box office. Moreover, Shahid and his girlfriend Kareena Kapoor were in the headlines of newspapers all over the country for their photographs showing both lip locking at a public place. Despite this the movie didn't do well, so Mahadevan is stated to be skipping Shahid this time from his forthcoming ventures. However, Kareena Kapoor is confident that Mahadevan will surely sign Shahid in his next two movies. Incidentally, a business woman will produce one of theses movie, while the other will be made by Ajit Sarkar. One of them is titled 'Do Dooni Chaar', and Mahadevan is yet to finalize his cast for it.

Sallu shaves chest

Salman Khan is known for his macho man image. This time he has got his chest shaved, presumably to impress his girlfriend, Katrina Kaif. He is known for such like things. He indulges in such gimmicks, sometime knowingly and some other times unintentionally. But such gimmicks do bring him in newspaper headlines. He has, therefore, lost his girlfriends in the past. It is learnt that Katrina got angry on him during his recently held birthday party celebrations. Katrina got so furious that she quit the party suddenly. This happened when Riya Sen appeared on the scene though quite late at night, and Sallu went to welcome her, leaving Katrina alone. Besides, Sallu himself offered the birthday cake to Riya. Thus, Katrina felt too jealous to suffer it. The macho man felt sad when he found that even Riya Sen had left the party in anger. What a pity!

Hrithik says 'Tum Sa Nahin Dekha' to Priyanka

Hrithik Roshan is not signing any movie after his 'Lakshya' dashed his hopes by not hitting box office. So, the father-son duo is concentrating on the home mega production costing more than Rs 250 million. The father has meanwhile roped in another big businessman G.S. Srivastava, to be the co-producer. This is to recall that Srivastava is the business tycoon who invested a huge sum of Rs 1000 million in F.S. Husain's paintings. Thus, in Roshan Papa's new movie 'Tum Sa Nahin Dekha' starring Priyanka Chopra in place of Preita Zinta of the 'Koi Mil Gaya', Hrithik might say 'Tum Sa Nahin Dekha' to his heroine Priyanka Chopra.

Ajay turns lunatic again

Ajay Devgan will be seen playing a lunatic in Harry Baweja's 'Main Aisa Hi Hoon'. He has played this role in 1994 too in Baweja's 'Dilwale'. Ajay is ready to accept any challenging role these days. So, he is the most popular actor with the directors at present. In fact, Raj Kumar Santoshi, Prakash Jha and Harry Baweja always prefer Ajay to any other artist. The search for a good actor ends with Ajay, it is usually said. Ajay has acquired this characteristic after his marriage with Kajol as he plays all sorts of characters.

Jaykumar to cast Salman as Anil Ambani

The film industry has got another interesting subject for making a film. This is to recall that not in the distant past, director Jaykumar had announced to make a film on the Ambani family controlling the India's largest private business group. Since the family seems to be splitting, Jaykumar has got another business house to finance a movie on Ambanis. According to industry circles, Jaykumar is looking for his cast; he is planning to cast Salman Khan in the role of Anil Ambani and Raj Babbar for playing Mukesh's character. Besides, he is considering Poonam Dhillon and RaveenaTandon to play the roles of the wives of the two brothers. Jaykumar has now started claiming that his movie has nothing to do with the Ambani family, and all the characters in the movie are imaginary and not real.

PREITY IS 'THE ONLY MAN' IN BOLLYWOOD

Preity Zinta has been described as 'the only man' in Bollywood. The media said so when she stood firm by her earlier statement made to the police in regard to the Bharat Shah case linking Bollywood with the underworld. Her senior colleagues have, however, distanced themselves from their statements made to the police during interrogation. Many of them do boast of their huge physique and display it as and when possible during the shooting in Hindi films. Preity is much junior to these stars, but is fearless in saying that she had been threatened by the underworld to toe their line. She, however, didn't acceed to their demands.

Why have you distanced yourself from the press?

I needed my own peace from the entire ruckus that was happening, especially pertaining to the Bharat Shah case. Sometimes, it is very important just to retire to one's own thoughts and one's own work.

Do you feel relieved this way?

Yes. This gives me immense relief. I am thoroughly enjoying this quiet phase. I did what I believed in. I stood by my earlier version.

Aren't you proud of being called 'the only man' in Bollywood?

It was unfair to call me 'the only man' in Bollywood. On the contrary, I felt bad about those heroes who were slammed unfairly. Imagine what those people must be going through. They will know best the situation they are in.

Do you sympathize with your colleagues?

I personally believe that the actors who were slammed by the media and the public are all heroes.

Did you face any trouble after your evidence in the court?

I am a very balanced person and have normal emotions just like everybody else. I am not stupid enough to invite trouble just to prove my fearlessness. I have lived life on my own terms.

FILMS MOTIVATE SANJAY DUTT

Sanjay Dutt, son of illustrious parents, Sunil Dutt and late Nargis, is today struggling between his career and court cases involving him for his alleged nexus with the underworld. A tall, handsome and strong in physique, Sanjay has gone grey. Lucky to become a star in a short span, he also faced hell in life. Despite this, Sanjay has a motive to live and that is his films and roles, according to him.

What did motivate you to survive in the midst of your alleged link with the underworld?

I am motivated. My films, my diverse roles, which are challenging, motivate me.

What's your strength?

My strength is God. The past has to be left behind. There is no use brooding and sulking over what happened. How can one grow and go on in life.

Did you ever have any problem with your father?

There's no problem with him. My father was never upset with me. All fathers get angry. That's all about it. Nothing has ever gone wrong between us and ever will.

Will you comment on your media image of a Casanova?

I am not a stud in a stud farm. I am happy as I am. I want my freedom.

SUSH: HOW IT FEELS TO BE A WOMAN IS VITAL

You must have heard that those crowned Miss Universe or Miss World very often take a pledge to work for the betterment of society. However, it's an open secret that none of these beauty queens adhere to the vows they undertook and of course which they (unwillingly) follow only for one year. The only exception to this trend has been the former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen. In a bid to continue her good deeds, she even adopted a baby girl a couple of years back. It's easy to make promises but difficult to keep them. But Sush has proved that both are as easy, if you are serious about fulfilling them.

On the professional front, after three flops in a row - 'Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai', 'Filhaal' and 'Tumko Na Bhool Payenge' - and a semi- hit 'Aankhen', Sen has set her eyes now on 'Praan Jaaye Par Shaan Na Jaaye' followed by the English version of 'Astitva', titled 'It Rained That Night'. She's just got back after shooting for the film in the icy cold weather in New York. She's said to have done a terrific job in 'It Rained That Night'. In fact, "this film will make Sushmita an international star. We're looking at the Spanish and French markets also. Besides, the Hispanic audience in the US will identify with the gender issues in this movie. Once it clicks, Sushmita's career abroad is made," predicts the director of the film Mahesh Manjrekar. Mahesh has almost wrapped up shooting. Now only the climax remains to be shot in New York and a flashback in Darjeeling.

How was shooting for 'It Rained That Night'?

I've never felt happier. I had a wonderful experience shooting for Mahesh Manjrekar's 'It Rained That Night'. This is a film about female emancipation, in the truest sense of the term. But like I said to the American press I want all the guys to come and watch it just to see how it feels to be a woman.

How different are the two versions?

The essential momentum of the two stories is the same. But Tabu and I are two different entities and actresses. So our treatment of the scenes is completely different. But, remember the emotional moments are spectacular.

Did your experiences with daughter Renee help you in 'Filhaal'?

I have always been the motherly kind right from childhood. Siya was just another aspect of a woman. I've always wanted to name my daughter Renee. It's been a long cherished dream. When I went to the hospital and saw this little bundle, I had to name her that. In fact, I did that as soon as I saw her. And she looked up at me with those big beautiful eyes. After that there was no looking back. I had to get her home.

Do you manage to give enough time to Renee?

More than enough... I spend good time with her. Spending time with my daughter gives me a bigger high than anything else.

What do you like about Renee?

I have never seen God till date. But if I were to see Him some day, Renee would be so much like Him. She looks like God to me.

Which stone are you wearing on your finger and about what all?

It is a very beautiful piece of jewellery. I love this ring. It has no connection whatsoever to any man. And contrary to what people are thinking, I am not getting married. I am very much here and acting in films. I am not quitting films at all.

Which films are you working on?

Apart from 'It Rained That Night', I have been signed for a film with Gordhan Tanwani, one with Panka Parashar, a Farah Khan film with Shah Rukh Khan and another Gaurang Doshi film. I have had too many releases of late. It is time I take a break before shooting for my next set of films.

Haven't you come a long way since your debut film 'Dastak'?

Yes, I have.

But then, why do you have a reputation of being unprofessional?

I have to confess. I was quite unprofessional at one point. I had this crazy equality thing in my head. I thought that if the hero can come late, why can't I? What I didn't realise is that it doesn't work that way. I mean, there's no excuse for you turning up late. Besides, you've been paid to show up on the sets on time. Today, nobody can point fingers at Sushmita Sen.

Weren't you too honest for the industry then?

Yes, that too. People just couldn't handle it. Actually, I'm honest today also. But I've learnt to compartmentalise my private and professional life. When I stepped into the industry, I didn't think twice about talking about my personal life. I didn't want to behave like a hypocrite. What was there to hide? But I guess people think differently. The industry has certain rules that have to be followed. Now I know where to draw the line when it comes to talking about myself.

AMRITA RAO BECOMES HEROINE IN 'ISHQ VISHQ'

Amrita Rao is in the news these days. She began with 'Ab Ke Baras', and was later assigned the role of a heroine in 'Ishq Vishq'. She also worked in 'The Legend of Bhagat Singh' produced by Tips. She has many offers -- from the Tusshar Kapoor -starrer 'Shart' to Tanuja Chandra's next flick that co-stars Rahul Khanna and from 'Naam' with Dino Morea and Karan Nath to Ghai's next film (untitled yet). She has become Ghai's favorite now. He has signed on this lass for two three films at one go.

Her 'Ishq Vishq' is also a directorial debut of Ken Ghosh, who is a renowned music video director. Amrita plays opposite a new comer in Shahid Kapoor. The music of the movie is already released and also appreciated by the young generation. Smashits met the team of 'Ishq Vishq' recently during their promotional visit.

What's 'Ishq Vishq' all about?

This film is in the news because this relates to the youth of today and their personal lives.

Who are other characters in the movie?

Shahid Kapoor and Shahnaaz are the other co-stars.

What's your opinion about its director, Ken Ghosh?

He is indeed very nice. He is a renowned music video director. 'Ishq Vishq' is his debut feature film. I am lucky to get an opportunity to work with him. Earlier too, I had the privilege of working with directors like Raj Kanwar and Raj Kumar Santoshi under a big banner of Tips.

Did you ever work in any music video?

Yes. I have worked in the music video of Alisha Chenoy, which was also released by Tips.

What are your forthcoming films?

At present, I am working in Farah Khan's 'Main Hoon Na' along with Shah Rukh Khan and Jayed Khan. Besides, I am acting in Gurang Doshi's film 'Deewar'.

Have you any comment on your career?

I am determined to do my best in films, as I have been fortunate to reach this destination so soon though initially I worked in ad films, modeling and music video.

Our team also met with the other stars of the film and sought their views about the movie.

Shahid: He is another chocolate boy in Bollywood. He reiterates Amrita's views. Today's young friends are more interested in Vishq instead of Ishq. He warns that if you do Ishq Visq, please be careful about your partner. When asked about Ishq, he says love need not be degraded as has been described in a song Kambakht Ishq and Ishq Nikamma. According to him, . Ishq is beyond relationship. Relations can be affected but not the love, which is eternal.

Shahnaaz says that Ishq is a difficult thing. This is beyond words or even description. Ishq is not 'nikamma' (useless) as is sung in a movie. Ishq is not a one-time affair. It can happen several times in one's life.

Amrita: I know nothing about Ishq. My boyfriend is camera (not cameraman) and I flirt with camera.

Lara Dutta sprains again

It is a coincidence that Lara Dutta gets her ankles sprained too often during her shoots. Recently, she got a sprain while shooting for Karan Johar's 'Kaal'. Not in the distant past, she had a sprain during a shoot with Akshay Kumar. However, she was lucky then as her star colleague came to her rescue and massaged her leg. However, this time round she was not as lucky. There was no Akshay Kumar to massage her sprained ankle!
