Watch Out Martin O’Neill: The Arsenal Are Coming

watched Stoke City’s miraculous late comeback against Aston Villa on Sunday and was delighted when the Potters managed to snatch a draw in the most unlikely of circumstances. I was understably relieved at the time, but only now has the enormity of Stoke’s fightback sunk in.
If Villa managed to hold on to their two goal advantage for another five minutes, they would have opened an eight point gap on Arsene Wenger’s side. Instead, Stoke’s Glen Whelan smashed the ball past Brad Friedel to keep Villa’s lead over Arsenal to six points.
Then on Wednesday, just one day after Arsenal’s comfortable victory over West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa faced Manchester City at the City of Manchester Stadium. The hosts were without star players Robinho and Craig Bellamy, and before the match I would have picked Aston Villa to come home with a win.
That was until the Gooner in Shaun Wright-Phillips came to the fore. The son of Arsenal legend Ian Wright, ‘Sweep’ won the spot kick which handed City the lead before adding a superb second after combining well with Stephen Ireland.
In just 95 minutes of on-field action, Aston Villa have gone from being on the verge of opening up an eight point gap on Arsenal to cutting their superiority over the Gunners to a mere three points. Villa host Tottenham in one week’s time, and if Spurs manage to come away from the midlands with a win and Arsenal do likewise against Blackburn, then the Gunners will move into fourth position.
Aston Villa and Arsenal each have ten games remaining in the Premiership this season and both sides must still face Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool. When you take that into account, who do you think is most likely to get a result agains the top three teams in England?
The success of Aston Villa this season can be attributed to two factors - their potent mix of pace and power when on the attack and the cohesion of their squad due to Martin O’Neill picking the same eleven player week-in, week-out when they are available.
After playing forty five games this season, this strategy (while effective in the first half of the season) is proving to be the main reason for Villa’s downfall. After six games without a win, Villa look like they have simply run out of steam. And, while this is a bad sign for any football team, it is worse for Aston Villa as they are dependent on blistering pace and raw power which cannot be provided when your squad is burnt out.
While Martin O’Neill will have to try and cope with a squad aleady struggling to deal with the rigours of a competetive Premiership season, counterpart Arsene Wenger will be bolstered by the fact that many of his star players are on the verge of returning to full fitness. Emmanuel Adebayor, Mikael Silvestre, Theo Walcott and Eduardo may all be back in the next week, while captain and talisman Cesc Fabregas is back in full training after three months on the sidelines.
Within a month Arsenal could have a squad on the verge of full fitness while Martin O’Neill will have to contend with the fact that his squad is likely to have very little left in them for the run-in to the title - the exact opposite of what you want coming into the business end of the season. O’Neill will be forced into fielding weaker squads if he wants to qualify for the Champions League, whereas Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal squad will be primed and ready for a fight. |
