[BAN FACE MASK EXPORT IMMEDIATELY AND BE TRANSPARENT ON FACE MASK PRODUCTION]

MPS is deeply concerned with the actions taken by the officers of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) with regards to the recent raids and penalties to community pharmacists for selling the face masks above the ceiling price in times of the Covid-19 pandemic.

MPS had earlier recommended that the government  ban the exports of face masks and review the ceiling price for face mask as there is a severe lack of supply from the local manufacturers due to the scarcity in raw materials. The previous KPDNHEP minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, had informed that local manufacturers will be able to supply 10 million face masks in the coming weeks. However, this is not known for now.  The new Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba said on March 12 that face mask stocks will be replenished soon without mentioning any further details.

We all know that China is the largest producer of face masks and they have already banned exports. Malaysia has four factories to produce face masks and two of it are dedicated towards the supply in public healthcare facilities and another only does export, leaving one factory remaining to serve the needs of 32.6 million Malaysians. The new government should immediately pick up the pieces and take leadership to control the manufacture and distribution of the face masks to the rakyat.

There is a need to review the ceiling price as the cost of production has increased with the high cost of raw materials and other related costs because of the pandemic. The manufacturers will not be able to produce and meet the current controlled ceiling price at retail outlets. The capacity of the local manufacturers is low versus the demand of the pandemic. The retailers are now having problem to sell the face masks at the current controlled ceiling price. This results in lack or no supply from the retailers to the rakyat. The retailers are also not able to sell the face masks at the current controlled price because the cost of importation from overseas has increased because of higher global market demand and the weak ringgit.

MPS would also suggest that the government to get the face mask manufacturers to share their daily production data transparently, so that the rakyat as well as the retailers are in the know. With the data, the government should advise the manufacturers to distribute the masks throughout Malaysia fairly, if possible, through community pharmacies as they are currently the most accessible healthcare professional in the community. MPS also recommends that the government subsidise the B40 group when the current ceiling price of the face masks is removed or relook based on current state of the pandemic.

Community pharmacists want to play a significant role in helping the government to distribute the face masks at a reasonable cost for the rakyat. And this needs support from the government. As an integral part of the community, the community pharmacists can educate the community on the Covid-19 infection, promotion of good personal hygiene, proper use of the face masks, proper hand washing techniques using soap or hand sanitisers and addressing the Covid-19 symptoms like fever, cough and sneezing.

MPS expects the Minister of Health and his deputies to play a more active and significant roles in facing this pandemic in the coming days, weeks and months.

td iols beli face mask kat kat apps WISH, tapi dari overseas la. 20pcs RM25, caj delivery rm4.50 sebab dapat diskaun untuk first timer. Rasanya dari China kot choiiiii...sebab terpengaruh dengan iklan kat FB kalau kat Lazada ada je dari China jual mask tapi harga pon boleh tahan yahudi jua...dan was2 jugaklah nak beli since made in China khuens..

btw, tadi laki kawan iols citer dia beli face mask kat kedai hardware yang jual2 barang untuk buat rumah tu la, 10pcs rm5 katanya...kalau laki, dia bagi beli tapi kena acah2 buat kerja berat gitulah....kalau pompuan dia tak bagi beli sebab mask tu khas untuk yang kerja2 berat gitu...
