Hungry Benitez to join Chelsea at Juve feeding frenzy
By JOE BERNSTEIN and DANIEL KING
22:00pm 15th July 2006
Liverpool and Chelsea will be the first English clubs to pick at the carcass of Juventus and the other fallen giants of Italian football.
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has confirmed that he is keen to take David Trezeguet or Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Anfield in a cut-price deal after the Turin club were relegated to Serie B with a 30-point deduction for the coming season.
Chelsea are battling Real Madrid, now managed by former Juventus boss Fabio Capello, for defenders Fabio Cannavaro and Gianluca Zambrotta. But Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger appeared yesterday to rule out any move for players affected by the Italian scandal.
While Fiorentina and Lazio have also been demoted with points deductions for their part in the match-fixing scandal, AC Milan will remain in Serie A but a 15-point deduction and their removal from Champions League will test the loyalty of their key players.
But it is Juventus who seem certain to be stripped of their principal assets, with Benitez confirming that he is likely to turn to Italy for the fourth forward he needs following the departures of Fernando Morientes and Djibril Cisse.
Benitez is already weighing up bids for Sweden striker Ibrahimovic and France forward Trezeguet, who missed the crucial penalty in last week's World Cup final, as budget restrictions mean Liverpool are highly unlikely to be able to meet Feyenoord's £10 million-plus asking price for Holland's Dirk Kuyt.
Billionaire's yacht
Benitez said: "All the Juventus players are good players. They will be a better price now than they would have been three months ago. There are possibilities for a loan arrangement. If there is a good player and he is professional, that is not a problem for me. Trezeguet is one who would be a good player for us."
Chelsea, meanwhile, are involved in a head-to-head battle with Real Madrid for World Cup winners Cannavaro and Zambrotta. The Mail on Sunday revealed Chelsea's interest in Cannavaro last week and he has since been pictured riding a jet-ski to meet Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich on the Russian billionaire's yacht, the Big Blue, moored off the Italian coast.
Cannavaro's agent, Enrico Fedele, says his client wants a longer-term contract than Chelsea are offering and will wait for Juventus's punishment to be confirmed, following the appeal process which begins this week, before deciding between London and Madrid.
Fedele, who initially claimed that it was a chance meeting between Cannavaro and Abramovich, with no potential transfer discussed, said: "Fabio would want a four-year deal, not three years. And we will wait for Chelsea's official request now, to go with the one we already have from Real Madrid.
"Fabio called me after the meeting on the boat and he was very pleased about it. He said Mr Abramovich is an exceptional person and he would be happy to play for Chelsea. They are one of the best three teams in the world. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Chelsea are all at that level as clubs now. But it will take a while because the sentence imposed on Juventus hasn't been confirmed yet. Cannavaro can use that time to decide between Chelsea and Real Madrid."
Harsh punishments
A sense of loyalty is also causing a dilemma for another World Cup winner, AC Milan's Gennaro Gattuso. Before and during the World Cup, the former Rangers player said he would stay with Milan no matter what punishment they received. But he will meet his agent, Alessandro D'Amico, today to make a decision about where he will be playing his football in the coming season.
The combative midfielder has previously spoken of his desire to play in the Premiership and has a Scottish wife, Monica. Manchester United's Sir Alex Ferguson will weigh up over the weekend whether to move for the midfielder.
Ferguson said: "The situation with the clubs in Italy is something we are addressing at the moment. It's not exactly clear at this stage what the circumstances are with the clubs that have been relegated.
"For instance, will they want to loan their players out for a year while they are in Serie B? Will the players be put up for sale or will they be freed? It's something that we just don't know at the moment."
D'Amico said: "I am going to sit down with Gennaro now in order to discuss the implications of all this. Only after we've had this in-depth chat can we decide what will be best for his future."
If Gattuso does want to leave Milan, Manchester is a more-than-likely destination. Last year he said: "It has always been a dream of mine to play for United. There is something special about Old Trafford and I would prefer Manchester to Chelsea.
"I have already played in Scotland and I know the Premiership would really suit my game. But something would have to happen between me and AC Milan for the move to become a reality."
The harsh punishments meted out to Juventus and the other Italian clubs were welcomed yesterday by Wenger but he added that his club could not afford to take advantage of the expected exodus of players from Italy.
Wenger said: "It is disturbing the market because you have a flow of players who will come out on the market but don,t forget that the players at Juventus are very well paid and not many clubs in the world can afford to pay these kind of wages.
"We cannot afford to do it and that's why we are not very much concerned by Juventus."
But Wenger refused to rule out a return from Turin of former captain Patrick Vieira and appears to be sending a message to Vieira and other possible targets, including David Trezeguet and Lilian Thuram, that they would have to accept wage cuts if they wanted to switch to Arsenal.
Cannavaro and Zambrotta.... Zambrotta masuk ganti DelBoy, Cannavaro masuk ganti Huth...:hmm: |
