Lille coach Claude Puel last night accused "violent" Manchester United fans of causing the trouble which overshadowed the first leg of the Champions League tie between the clubs.
Speaking on the eve of tonight's return match at Old Trafford, Puel said: "It is a paradox to criticise Lille. Manchester United's own fans were violent and in possession of counterfeit tickets.
"The facts are there for everyone to see, so it is difficult to see why it is Lille's fault.
"Since the first match, we have heard a lot of things from the Manchester United side. But the situation has been created by them."
Riot police fired tear gas into the United section of the crowd during their 1-0 win in the first leg of the last-16 tie, which was staged at Lille's temporary venue in Lens.
Some United fans appeared to be crushed against safety barriers after local police decided to let those with tickets for other areas of the ground, or without tickets altogether, enter that part of the stadium. United have sent a huge dossier to Uefa, who will hold their own investigation into the incident on March 22.
Lille have already had two appeals against the legality of Ryan Giggs' winning goal in the first leg, from a quickly-taken free kick, rejected by Uefa. |
