Primera Liga Team Of The Week (Round 15)
Goalkeeper
Andr? Palop (Sevilla): The new league leaders may have been expected to defeat Recreativo in the Andalucian derby, but they have to thank their keeper for ensuring that they secured all three points. After the home side had equalised, Pal? was called upon to make several saves to keep Sevilla in the match and those stops allowed his side to eventually triumph.
Defenders
?varo (Levante): The Brazilian was in commanding form at the back alongside Alexis as they helped their team repel a strong Celta forward-line. The only lapse came in the second minute of the game, but Baiano's goal was spectacular and there was little the defence could have done to prevent it. For the remaining 88 minutes, the visitors were unable to add to their tally thanks to the performance of the hosts' rearguard.
Michel Salgado (Real Madrid): The veteran full-back is rarely praised for his performances, but his display against Espanyol on Sunday was exemplary. As well as helping in attack, the former Celta defender was outstanding, especially after Fabio Cannavaro's dismissal. The move that best highlighted the amount of work that he put in was the last-ditch tackle to deny Coro in front of goal.
Unai Exp?ito (Athletic Bilbao): As the Basque Country stumbled from defeat-to-defeat earlier in the campaign the one criticism always aimed at them was how the defence was. Under new coach Man? that back-line has improved immensely and the performance of Exp?ito showed just how much work has been done to prevent mistakes from happening. The clean sheet ensured that Athletic won comfortably against Depor.
Midfielders
H?tor Font (Osasuna): Returning to his former club, the 22-year-old was given a rare start in the team and he used that chance to show what he is capable of. Font was at the centre of nearly every attacking move from the visitors and his ability to drop back as well as take people on and provide the killer pass rightly earned him a place in this team of the week.
Javi Mart?ez (Athletic Bilbao): When Athletic agreed to pay ?6 million for the youngster in the summer, then-coach Javier Clemente publicly criticised the club's transfer policy and was sacked. On Saturday, the 18-year-old proved that his signing was a very shrewd one as he not nly stood out in midfield, but scored both goals to beat Depor, with the second one being particularly special.
Gari Uranga (Real Sociedad): When a team is struggling for confidence and twice goes behind at home to close rivals, it takes a particular sort of player to lift those around him and be a guiding force. Against N?tic at the weekend, Uranga did just that as he rallied his side and helped them to bounce back, not just once, but twice to earn their first win of the season.
Javad Nekounam (Osasuna): The Iranian international is becoming a regular in the Osasuna side after joining the club in the summer and it is easy to see why. While some thought a longer period of adaptation maybe needed, he has had little trouble slotting into Osasuna's system and was an integral part of the win at Villarreal. His headed goal also showed that he can be deadly when attacking the penalty area.
Ra? (Real Madrid): With Luis Aragon? looking on from the stands, the visitors captain made it very hard for the Spain boss to ignore him as he gave everything in a tireless performance against Espanyol. Under Fabio Capello, the Madrid number seven knows that hard work is important and it is a testament to him that he is willing to chase back and help create goals as well as score them.
Forwards
Pierre Web? (Osasuna): The Cameroon international had played only one ful match in the league before the weekend, but his display against Villarreal meant that he was never a candidate to be taken off. After opening the scoring with a superb header, he caused the opposition defence problems throughout and even won his team a penalty for their third goal from yet another darting run into the area.
Fr??ic Kanout? (Sevilla): A regular in the Goal.com team of the week, the former Tottenham forward thoroughly deserves his place this time around too. As well as scoring to take his season tally to 12 goals, his ability to hold up the ball and give the defence some relief was crucial in a game that ended with a somewhat flattering scoreline against Recreativo.
