Manchester United must throw down gauntlet to Chelsea

MANCHESTER: Manchester United closed the gap on Premier League champions Chelsea to eight points last season and will not want to be second-best much longer.

United won the League Cup, a competition they normally regard as the least of their priorities, but that was small consolation for a club desperate to reclaim the title they last won in 2003.

The time has come for manager Alex Ferguson to deliver again or face fresh questions about staying on beyond his 20-year reign at Old Trafford.

Big-spending Chelsea, who have again invested heavily over the close season on Michael Ballack, Andriy Shevchenko and United target John Obi Mikel, will take some catching as they pursue a hat-trick of championship wins.

Ferguson believes he is in charge of a developing squad and by starting the season better aims to put pressure on Chelsea.

However, hopes of improving on last season? injury-marred start have already been hit with new signing Michael Carrick likely to miss the opening couple of games with an ankle injury.

England centre back Rio Ferdinand is one of a number of United defenders who have sustained injuries in pre-season, while the threat of bans for Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes after red cards in a warm-up tournament have not helped preparations.

Carrick? move from Tottenham Hotspur in deal that could add up to ?18.6mil (US$35.48mil) has proved that United, under the Glazer family, can still spend big.

The 25-year-old will fill the holding role left vacant by the departure of Roy Keane last year, following a number of disappointing midfield buys, and United should be defensively sound, especially if Gabriel Heinze returns to full fitness.

But it is in attack where question marks remain.

Cristiano Ronaldo? commitment will come under close scrutiny when he is targeted by rival supporters in the aftermath of Portugal? World Cup win over England.

With Rooney around United will always be capable of winning matches and the return to fitness of Old Trafford stalwarts Scholes and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a plus.

The departure of Dutch striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy to Real Madrid leaves a huge hole, though.

If United can make up for his absence in front of goal they should be equipped to compete for the big prizes. If not then Chelsea will remain out of sight. ? Reuters

Man Utd announce huge season-ticket sales

Manchester United have defied their critics by recording massive season-ticket sales for the coming campaign.

With the Sunday evening deadline for sales fast approaching, the Red Devils claim the existing number of tickets sold, including those in executive areas at Old Trafford, has now reached 64,000.

When the normal allocation reserved for away supporters is included, it would take the club to within touching distance of the 67,500 capacity of previous campaigns. Capacity now stands at 76,000 with the opening of new quadrants.

The impressive sales figure, way in excess of any other Premiership club's ground capacity, has come in the face of continued opposition among more militant groups of United fans to the ownership of Malcolm Glazer.

Chants against Glazer have been heard at most United pre-season games since they returned from last month's tour of South Africa, although the feeling inside Old Trafford is that the worst is now over and the club can start to move forward with increasing confidence under their new owners.

'This is fantastic news,' said a club spokesman.

'We have almost sold as many tickets for every game before the start of the season than we had as an entire capacity last year.

'It is a record figure, not just for us but for English football as a whole and something we are very proud of.

'It shows that United fans are continuing to support the team at Old Trafford in huge numbers.'

Supporters who want season tickets but fail to meet Sunday's deadline will be placed on the waiting list created by the club when they confirmed they were launching a special one-year season ticket earlier in the summer.

However, it seems doubtful such hefty support will translates into a healthy gate for Saturday's friendly with Sevilla.

Having tried, and failed, to attract Barcelona and Real Madrid for the game, which officially opens the new quadrants, and with Italian football in chaos following the match-fixing scandal, United were forced to plump for last season's UEFA Cup winners as their `big-name' opposition.

But it appears the United support have been unimpressed by the choice of opponent and, like most clubs, Old Trafford's capacity is not likely to be tested.

Bye Bye Luke

After earning a big money move to Manchester United in the summer of 2002, goalkeeper Steele has struggled to make much of an impact at the club.
He spent the 2004/05 season on loan at Coventry City and although he did win many plaudits, he was also responsible for a number of glaring howlers as well.

Steele played 36 games for the Sky Blues as they narrowly avoided relegation from the Championship.

He started his career with his home town club, Peterborough United, before being snapped up by United.

Steele joined the club with a huge reputation - even though he had only played two games for Posh.

He made his Football League debut in a 2-2 draw at Reading, and also played in a 2-1 home win over Bury - the last two games of the 2001/02 season.

Prior to that he had been on loan at the Premiership club as Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to take a closer look before making a permanent bid.

Steele cost Sir Alex ?500,000 in May 2002 - the player was only 17-years-old. The fee could rise to ?2.2million depending on his success at United.

An England youth international, Steele signed a four-year contract.

On signing, the player said: 'I don't think it has sunk in that I am a Manchester United player, but I am sure it will hit me soon. It was a very special moment when I signed the contract and it was a feeling I will never forget. I have dreamt about this all of my life and I can't wait to put on the United shirt

'I know I have a lot of hard work to do as Manchester United have some fantastic goalkeepers, but I just have to work my way through the levels and I can't wait for the challenge.'

However, Steele has failed to progress as most would have hoped and his United career looks set to come to an end.
