Rostock, Duisburg relegated as Bayern approach record

Duisburg and Hansa Rostock were relegated from the Bundesliga on Saturday while champions Bayern are on the verge of the record for the least amount of league goals conceded in a season. .
After they both spent just one season in Germany's top flight, Duisburg were condemned to the second division after they lost 3-2 at home to champions Bayern, while Hansa Rostock's 2-1 defeat by Bayer Leverkusen sent them down. .
Nuremberg - German Cup winners in 2007 - have one game left to save themselves following their 1-0 defeat at Hertha Berlin. .
Either Nuremberg or Arminia Bielefeld will be the third side to be relegated next weekend. .
Energie Cottbus made sure they will stay in the Bundesliga with a shock 2-0 win at home to Hamburg. .
Having been confirmed as Bundesliga champions last weekend, Bayern raced into a 3-0 lead only to concede two second half goals and had to cling on to their slender lead for a 3-2 win. .
"We made life hard for ourselves by making too many errors and conceding the early goal," said Duisburg coach Rudi Bommer. .
"I appealed to the players sense of honour at half-time as we were 3-0 down and we did well in the second half. .
"But we are being relegated not based on today's (Saturday's) performance, but based on what we have done over the last season." .
Bayern have conceded 20 goals this season and are one game away from breaking Werder Bremen's record of 22 for the lowest number of goals leaked in a season. .
Munich took an early lead at Duisburg when midfielder Andreas Ottl unleashed a right-footed shot from 21 metres after just three minutes. .
"I couldn't believe we were 3-0 up after 20 minutes, I don't think anyone could," said Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld. .
"Duisburg under-performed in the first half, but responded by pushing us hard and were on the verge of beating us by the final whistle. .
"Even though we have won the league, it is important we win our games, right up until the end of the season - we have a responsibility to our fans." .
Germany striker Lukas Podolski netted twice in two minutes to put the champions out to a 3-0 lead after just 20 minutes. .
But Duisburg fought back with two second half goals to put the champions under pressure at 3-2 with more than half an hour remaining. .
Werder Bremen remain second in the league behind Bayern after their 6-1 hammering of Hanover 96. .
Portuguese striker Hugo Almeida opened the scoring with a 14th minute goal, but the second half turned into a goal feast in Bremen before Hanover grabbed a consolation goal on the final whistle. .
And third-placed Schalke - just two points behind - kept up the pressure on Bremen with a hard-fought 1-0 win at home to Eintracht Frankfurt. .
Dark horses VfL Wolfsburg are on the verge of a UEFA Cup berth after their 4-0 humbling of VfB Stuttgart. .
The hosts took the lead when Brazilian Marcelinho netted after 16 minutes and things quickly went bad to worse when Stuttgart were reduced to 10-men after Fernando Meira was sent off after 18 minutes. .
With four sides - Wolfsburg, Stuttgart, Bayer Leverkusen and Hamburg - all locked on 51 points and just two UEFA Cup places available, it will all be decided on the last day of the season next Saturday.

Bayern Munich strike terms with AC Milan's Gattuso
tribalfootball.com - May 08, 2008

Bayern Munich have struck personal terms with unsettled AC Milan midfield ace Rino Gattuso.
Controcampo says after nine years, Gattuso is ready to leave Milan in the summer after reaching an in-principle agreement with Bayern. With Italy teammate Luca Toni and Bayern powerbrokers Franz Beckenbauer and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge all working in the background, Gattuso is ready to make a move to Germany in the summer. Jol Appointed Hamburg Boss

Tue 13 May, 11:09 PM

Bundesliga side Hamburg have appointed former Tottenham boss Martin Jol as their new coach from next season.

Jol, who has signed a deal until June 2010, will succeed Huub Stevens after his fellow Dutchman takes over at PSV Eindhoven at the end of the current Bundesliga campaign.

Jol was dismissed by Spurs in October last year after a poor start to the Premier League season.

Jol's assistant will be Zeljko Petrovic, the former coach of Dutch second division side RKC Waalwijk.

Hamburg have been on the look-out for a new boss ever since Stevens announced last November he would be joining Eredivisie champions PSV in the summer.

Jol's appointment had been widely expected and Hamburg chairman Bernd Hoffmann was delighted to have finally bagged his man.

He told the club's official website: "We are certain that in Martin Jol we have appointed the right coach."

Jol will be officially presented as Hamburg coach at the start of next week. The Bundesliga side's sporting director Dietmar Beiersdorfer added: "We are looking forward very much to working with Martin Jol in the future."

Jol joined Tottenham in 2004 after a brief spell as assistant to Jacques Santini and guided them to the brink of Champions League qualification in 2006, only missing out on a top-four finish on the last day of the season.

Hamburg have faded away in the latter part of the Bundesliga season and could even miss out on a UEFA Cup place.

They lie in fifth place, one of four sides on 51 points going into the final game of the campaign.

Klasnic Leaves As Talks Collapse

Croatian international striker Ivan Klasnic is to leave Werder Bremen at the end of the season.

Twenty-eight-year-old Klasnic, who has been selected in the Croatia Euro 2008 squad, does not have another club lined up as yet, but is rumoured to be attracting the interest of Turkish side Besiktas, who appeared in the Champions League this season.

Klaus Allofs, Bremen抯 director of sport, announced the news on Wednesday.

"We improved our offer once again, but Ivan unfortunately decided not to accept it," revealed Allofs to the clubs official website.

"We had expected a different outcome, because he is a superb forward who has proved his class at the highest level, despite his kidney transplant."

Indeed, Klasnic has had a major health problem over the past two years, having suffered renal failure in January 2007 and undergoing successful kidney surgery just two months later.

Klasnic is in the process of legal proceedings against two of the clubs doctors for failing to diagnose his problem, although he had still been in negotiations over a new deal and was widely expected to sign.

Klasnic has a creditable record of 49 Bundesliga goals in 150 games and the forward has been a good servant to the German抯 in his seven years at the club. The highlight of Klasnic抯 stay at the Weserstadion was the accomplishment of winning the 2004 German league and cup double.

Bayern's domination worries Bundesliga rivals

BERLIN (AFP) - Bayern Munich's domination of the Bundesliga this season may have gone down well at the Allianz Arena, but their fourth domestic double in six years is causing alarm bells to ring in Germany.
[size=-2]ADVERTISEMENT

Bayern wrapped up the German Cup and Bundesliga double at the start of the month to add to their 2003, 2005 and 2006 success, but their title rivals are concerned the bar has been set too high.
Without question, no other Bundesliga side can match the financial resources of Bayern.
The German giants splashed out 69 million euros (100 million US dollars) last summer to bring the likes of Italy's Luca Toni, French star Franck Ribery and German striker Miroslav Klose to Munich.
They effectively bought the German league title and secured their place in next season's Champions League, but their main rivals are wondering if they can match the Bavarian football barons.
"There's a great danger of Bayern winning the title three or four times in the next five years," said Bayer Leverkusen's director of sport Rudi Voeller.
His side are still chasing a UEFA Cup place with the season finishing this weekend and he admits Bayern are "unrivalled" in the German league in terms of finances.
Wolfsburg boss and former Bayern handler Felix Magath believes the newly-crowned champions are "on a par with the biggest clubs of them all, the Real Madrids, AC Milans and Arsenals."
Only 2007 champions VfB Stuttgart and Energie Cottbus managed to beat Bayern in the league this season.
And Stuttgart coach Armin Veh says the gap between Bayern and the league's "also-rans" is growing too wide.
"A couple of clubs could have got at Bayern this season. I think it'll be more difficult in the years to come, because their team will become even more settled," said Veh.
Bayern have reportedly offered AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso a six million euros a year salary to boost their Champions League campaign next season while fellow World Cup winner Toni is already paid a 10 million euros annual salary.
"The Champions League is more important than anything else next season," admits Bayern manager Uli Hoeness.
New coach Jurgen Klinsmann knows he has to make an impact in Europe next season when he starts on July 1.
Bayern led the Bundesliga from the opening weekend to the last, but some of their rivals have already laid down the gauntlet for next season.
"They've been clearly the best this season," said Schalke 04 manager Andreas Muller.
"But that doesn't mean Bayern will win the championship every year from now on.
"Clubs like Werder, Stuttgart and us are always in with a chance of matching them over the course of a full season." And Hamburg Director of Sport Dietmar Beiersdorfer used the form of the full Germany side to rubbish any claims of Bayern domination. "Franz Beckenbauer predicted Germany would be invincible after winning the 1990 World Cup (he coached them to the title that year), but that wasn't the case then, and it won't be the case with Bayern now."

Round 37 Bundesliga

PREVIEW: Plenty at stake in Bundesliga climax as Bayern celebrate Hamburg - The scramble for places in European competition goes to the wire in the Bundesliga Saturday with four teams level on points and fighting for two UEFA Cup slots. Meanwhile Werder Bremen and Schalke battle for the runners-up spot and automatic qualification for the group stage of the Champions League, while Arminia Biefeld and Nuremberg are in a desperate tussle to avoid relegation.

The last day of the German season will also see Bayern Munich celebrate the title before home fans and bid a farewell to coach Ottmar Hitzfeld and goalkeeper Oliver Kahn.

For Bremen, a point at Bayer Leverkusen will almost certainly be enough to secure second place behind Bayern, who have a 10-point lead at the top.

Third-placed Schalke - two points behind Bremen and with a much inferior goal difference - definitely need a win at Nuremberg to have any chance, but the home side need three points to avoid the drop.

Fourth-placed Leverkusen are meanwhile one of four teams - with SV Hamburg, VfL Wolfsburg and VfB Stuttgart - level on points in the race for UEFA Cup qualification.

Leverkusen's superior goal difference gives them an advantage, but fifth-placed Hamburg appear to have the easier task on paper with a home game against mid-table Karlsruhe who have nothing to play for.

Yet Hamburg's recent record - one win in the last nine games and no goals in six of the last seven - does not raise confidence outgoing Dutch coach Huub Stevens can bid farewell in style.

Sixth-placed Wolfsburg are lying in wait with a visit to Borussia Dortmund, while last season's champions Stuttgart are at home to Bielefeld for whom a win will be enough to avoid relegation.

"We are only looking at our game and want a good away game," Bielefeld coach Michael Frontzek told Kicker magazine.

"We have our fate in our own hands and don't want to let it go. I don't have to say that Stuttgart are a very good team, but the league has shown that any team is capable of winning on the day."

Nuremberg are two points behind Bielefeld but have a much better goal difference - which will only be relevant if they beat Schalke and Bielefeld draw in Stuttgart.

"I am still confident that we will make it, although Schalke is a tough nut to crack and we are dependent upon Stuttgart. But I believe in the team," Nuremberg coach Thomas von Heesen said.

A few emotional tears may be shed along with the champagne in Munich where Bayern crown their 21st German title with the presentation of the Bundesliga trophy.

That will follow a home match against Hertha Berlin, the last for coach Hitzfeld before he takes on the job of coaching Switzerland after Euro 2008 and a farewell for keeper Kahn, who at nearly 39 and in his 557th Bundesliga match ends a 20-year professional career.

Bayern are distributing 70,000 red-and-white flags for the match and have asked fans to dress in red and white for the celebrations in the Allianz Arena which should also include honours to striker Luca Toni as Bundesliga top scorer for the season.

After the match, the team will parade in a convoy from the stadium to central Marienplatz and a reception at the City Hall to mark a season which also saw the team clinch the cup and league cup titles.

There are still one or things to play for: Bayern, with 20 goals conceded this season, want to break the Bundesliga best-defensive mark of 22 set by Bremen in 1987/88 as a fitting farewell for Kahn.

If Bayern get a penalty, the keeper himself would also like the chance to score his first Bundesliga goal.

Hertha meanwhile will want to be on their best behaviour, with a chance of UEFA Cup qualification on a fair-play ticket.

Eintracht Frankfurt, at home to relegated Duisburg, are also in contention for the fair-play slot awarded to Germany this week.
